UPDATE: It’s Real
It’s hard to give guidance on the photo you see below. It comes courtesy of a post on the SEGAbits forums, and it is allegedly a screenshot showing a boss from Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
The photo appears to be from Splash Hill Zone, showing a very familiar scene for classic Sonic fans, with a new, modern look for Eggman.
If it’s real, it’s another in a series of leaks related to this game, though this may not be as serious as the last one could have been. If it’s fake, it’s a damn good mockup.
4:45PM Update: According to third party accounts relayed by Tweaker of Sonic Retro, the screenshot and setting appear legitimate.
“According to a talk Endri (Lauson) had with (Retro administrator) Aquaslash, there’s a chasing segment to the boss as well,” he said shortly after the screenshots were released. “So not only does this legitimize everything Endri said, but the consistency between the account and this picture proves both of them as real. It’s also further proof that this game is more or less final.”
As it turns out, the screenshot below is originally the product of a Sonic Retro find, not SEGAbits. This is a huge development, and we have a follow-up on the way.

Yeah, looking back on this, it looks SUPER fake. Why are the trees in the background more blurry than the ocean?
even though it looks fake, I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes out to be the first boss! not that i’m complaining!
It does look fake, doesn’t it! The funny thing is that the original bad-quality shot that was leaked is just as blurry. Not sure why, but there you go.
Also note that the mountains in the background–the ones also in the title screen–have sections not shown in the title screen art. Where do you suppose he got that from if it’s a fake?

Personally I feel quite certain this is the real thing. Something about that Eggman/Robotnik just feels all too legit.

There could be two a number of reasons why it says that.
1: The boss could have its own level, ergo thats why the time is so short.
2: The timer could reset once you reach the boss (though I higly doubt that)
Bosses are their own act in Sonic 4. Look at the leaked videos, dudes.

More than the jump from sonic 2-3, this is kind of reboot game, with stuffs from 1-2, mad gear, is similar in some way to metropolis zone, the casino street is very similar to casino night.
If they are making sonic 4, make those stage that never appears in the 16-bit era, a 2d horror stage, a 2d wild west stage, lets see, they used casino, carnivals, music plant, well, sega can maybe use candy, you know “Candy Kingdom zone”, is just a idea, but the point is, make a real sonic 4, and not a weird reboot game, ou yea, the grass is still ugly, the grass has a lot bevel and emboss.

Fine, but explain to me… why is there a bit of light green repeating in the top left corner of certain pieces of ground? Looks like a copy and paste job to me.
Plus, I was saying that the farthest part LESS blurry than the very blurry closer part. Which makes no sense. Also, sonic is standing a few inches INTO the platform, unlike all the gameplay we’ve seen where he stands at the very TOP. How do you explain that?
Ii hate this! Sega will now just copy every single detail of the old games with nothign new or improved in it! This really makes me mad! I am more excited for endless ocean blue ocean more than this.
I’m not believing this is legit one bit. Taking into the account for JPEG and compression the edges still look too sharp (as if they had been Photoshopped). If it is real I hope the final version is cleaned up some more. The background looks just like a screencap of the “title screen” with a photo filter to make it looks like the evening Splash Hill Zone (the “Select a Zone” screen). They could’ve done better to make the horizon line (where the water meets the sky) look better. Photoshop magic wand anyone?

Well I think we can all agree that games like Sonic Unleashed and Black Knight were “diffrent” enough, let the puritis have there moment eh.

@sonic41 Not only is it unoriginal, they, as we all know, already reused this boss in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, so it’s doubly unoriginal. It’s a repost of a repost.
Anyhow, this looks weird to me, not sure what to say on it. It’d be interesting though, if all these leaks were a giant troll from Sega, and the final game didn’t even have this stage in it.
I heard that Endri got called a attention whore after releasing the response from Ruby about the going to leak Sonic 4. My hopes (poof) are gone period.

hmm. i read somewhere this wouldn’t be sonic 1 in HD.
why do the characters look like really sharp cell shading? they look somewhat out of place on the platforms.
whether this is fake or not, i really hope this isn’t prelude of things to come, i mean, seriously, re-using bosses??
i don’t mind that this is a more classic game, but don’t turn this into a game that was already made with better, high quality graphics >.>
Seems to me Sega/Sonic Team is just testing the waters with Episode 1. Possibly to prove to us and themselves that they can do this. If so, the gloves’ll probably come off in Episode 2… At least that’s what I think at this point.
It fake, I watched the videos and looked at images and compared, sonic stands completely on top of the platform as within this picture he is inside of it. It looks to me like a copy and past blens here, I wouldnt believe too much of this
