Video: Unity Based 2.5D SFG Revealed, Praised

Tristan Oliver | March 15, 2010

Why So Little is Getting So Much Attention

Over the weekend, forumers of Sonic Retro were wowed at first sight of a two and a half dimensional Sonic fan game in development now by newcomer Pelikan13.

We have 720p HD screenshots and a video of the game in action below.  It’s said to run off the Unity 3D engine, and it’s meant to be a fusion of both original and classic Sonic levels.  What you see in the imagery, for example, is a reimagination of Sonic 2′s Emerald Hill Zone.

Pelikan13 says he plans to release a one level demo of the game soon, with prospects of any continuation into a full product dependent on community support.  But already, the winds of support have turned heavily in his favor, with comparisons to Sega’s upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4–and a few proclaiming this SFG could be what the next proper Sonic is not.

It may be a bit early for that, since a demo hasn’t been released yet.  But if the SFG can live up to the hype, we may have a new standard on which others will be judged in short order.  You can judge for yourself–have a look at the quick proof of concept video and development screenshots, and give us your preliminary evaluation in our comments area.  Thanks to SonikkuForever and Alios for sending this information in.  If you have news to share, be sure to share it with us by clicking News Tips at the top of every page.

Well I be darned! This game actually has better graphics than Sonic 4!! That Sonic model looks a bit wonky though. Looks like a combo between old-generation Sonic and Sonic Unleashed”s Sonic model.

Let’s see how this game plays, though. . .

Looks GREAT! =D I guess when SUMO DIGITAL would make Sonic 4 it would look sort of like this! =D

I hope the Art Directors of Sonic 4 see this and put similar effort into the visuals of, say, Episode 2 of Sonic 4! I don´t wanna sound rude, but this looks a lot more …. vibrant / alive than Sonic 4 does, it has personality in the visual style! Something I hope Sonic 4 will get at some point!
If this great looking stuff can be done by just one person, then I have to ask someone, why Sonic Team / Dimps cannot put so much love into it aswell!? You can feel it, looking at this gives me a warm feeling around my heart, it looks so friendly and happy that you just wanna hop in and explore! =D

Off Course Gameplay is a different Story, but I have to give this guy a HUGE thumbs up, the effort up till this point is just AMAZING! =D Look at all those little details!!
So yeah, from Artist to Artist, this is A++! =D

Wow, it looks simply beautiful. Lively, too.

I just wish people weren’t so quick to dismiss Sonic 4 because of this, though.

Why couldn’t he just create, you know, an original level? If I wanted Emerald Hil Zone, I’d go play Sonic 2. If I wanted a prettier Emerald Hill Zone, I’d play Sonic 2HD.

    Not impressed.

    Sonic 4 looks better imo

Sonic 4 looks unprofessional and bland (and like it’s made out of plastic) in comparison with this. I bet (at least part of) the art style (rich, beautiful colors and flowing, lively art) will be used in “Sonic 4: Good Edition”, along with a Sonic model that doesn’t look like a lanky prick.

Kits’Okami if you wanted an even prettier EHZ you’d play this lol.

@JQP: In the end, it’s still the same Zone we’ve all played a million times already.

Its ok, I just think people want any reason to bash Sonic 4.

The envionrment get in the way to much, at least in Sonic 4 you can always see sonic
