Sonic goes portable once again
Months ago, we brought you a rumor that Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 would be coming to the iPhone along side WiiWare, Playstation Network, and Xbox 360 releases. Speaking directly to Sega today, we have learned that rumor was false. First@TSSZ, we have learned that Sonic 4’s mysterious fourth platform will be none other than the Sega Game Gear.
Chatting with VP Dave Coulier earlier today, he discussed with me the reasoning behind resurrecting Sega’s long-dead handheld system:
“Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is a unique beast. It’s introducing the classic Sonic gameplay to a brand new generation of gamers who simply did not grow up with that style of game. Plus, unlike the Nintendo DS, PSP, or iPhone, the Sega Game Gear has an established userbase that has been around nearly 20 years strong. In Brazil.“
When asked how the device could cope with an episodic game of this type, Mr. Coulier revealed a brand new piece of hardware for the Game Gear: The Wifi Tuner. Plugging in to the Game Gear’s cartridge slot, the Wifi tuner will allow users to connect to the internet and download new episodes of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 as they’re released.
“Being able to distribute Sonic the Hedgehog 4 wirelessly like this, through our own content delivery system, gives Sega a tremendous upper-hand over the competition. This is the first step in many that will lead to a resurgence of Sega in the hardware market, mark my words.”
Dave then made a hand gesture to “cut it out” while making a Popeye voice and abruptly left the room.
