Admin: “You fuckers fucked up bad”
It was only after the video release of Sonic 4′s E.G.G Station Zone and ending that the administrators of Sonic Retro, which to this point had been the central focus of new leaks on the next Sonic, felt enough was enough.
“The thread’s been hidden until we can clean up the leaks, but the damage is done,” wrote Retro forumer Xkeeper in an announcement to users that any further discussion on the game will result in a permanent ban. “You’ve gone and ruined a game three months early, and with it some of the stuff we had planned.”
That decision was affirmed in a stern follow-up from Retro administrator Scarred Sun.
“You fuckers fucked up BAD,” she said, in part.
No public elaboration was given on plans Sonic Retro had in relation to Sonic 4.
To this point, posts there–some directly from forumer infinity, widely believed to be the source of the leak, and some indirectly–had been the first place to see the information. Administrators generally didn’t immediately act on links to the video once published for discussion. That above all else may be why the sudden shift to a complete lockout took a few by surprise.
“The leaks are certainly urging lots of discussion, why bother to stop it?” asked Hero of Legend on NeoGAF. “I personally see nothing wrong with talking about it at all, hence why we’re doing so right now.”
“This is strange, the mods were even discussing the leaked videos, and they even posted the leaks on the front page,” added another NeoGAFer, Teknoman.
And he’s right. In fact, as of the time of this article’s publication, stories about a few of the leaked materials now part of the overall Sonic 4 ban from Sonic Retro’s forums remain online and, in one case, quite prominently on the main page of Sonic Retro. Of note, however, is how the stories, in their current form, do not reference infinity’s series of leaks, other than a note that one such link to a video was removed after a brief period of existence “out of respect,” according to writer Overlord.
We asked Sonic Retro forum administrator Tweaker for public comment on the matter. He gave us this statement.
Company-fanbase relations are far more important than people give them credit for; every single time they say something abrasive and uneducated or scramble to leak this game material before it’s supposed to come out, they are hurting the very kind of thing we all strive for–the willingness of the company that keeps our interest alive cooperating with us and helping us achieve our own goals with their absolute plethora of funded resources. The disrespect that people have shown SEGA as a company is astounding, and the fact that they continue to provide support and interaction with the fanbase is, frankly, unbelievable.
I don’t know what’s going to happen when it comes to Sonic 4 now, frankly. But some really cool shit we could have hooked people up with is now going to be completely fucking dashed because a bunch of spoiled little brats couldn’t wait 3 more months to learn about their precious little Sonic sequel. This is like the people who leak prototypes or ruin relations with the people who have them; you may hate that they hoard the carts and decide to do what they want with property they’ve obtained, but at the end of the day they say whether you get it or not. You’re an asshole to that guy and he’ll laugh you out the door when you ask to see his cool toy. That’s all there is to it.
When asked to respond to the theory that Retro administrators may have acted as enablers by not removing links to the leaks sooner, this is what he said:
You could say that if you didn’t know how we were trying to approach the issue. As SEGA has shown through their attempts to suppress leaks, they’re generally very short-lived and highly ineffective. The only effective way to try and prevent leaks is to get legal on their asses and threaten them not to leak any more lest they want to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I will say right now that I will absolutely cooperate in stopping these people in whatever way I can without outright revoking their forum privileges, though as it seems that courtesy may now be thrown to the wind in favor of a hard crackdown on anyone that even tries to spread more leaked info.
The fundamental problem with this, however, is that if you ban someone from talking about the leaks, they’ll just take them elsewhere–somewhere where that information is welcome. So it doesn’t really stop the leak as much as it just damages our notoriety. That’s the strong irony in it all.
Finally, we pointed out one of the stories cited above on the main pages of Sonic Retro concerning the Lost Labyrinth leak, and Tweaker offered this response:
Once something leaks, I don’t particularly see the point in trying to suppress. Then all it becomes is a race to see who gets it up first. One person will save that picture knowing its worth, and that person will spread it around. This is evidenced by how that boss screenshot spread all around before it was even posted in any public medium. One person. That’s all it took. One person and a news tip. That’s why it seems like no matter what you try and do, it’s all fucked, which is what makes this so difficult.

Yeah, maybe we wouldn’t. At the same time, though, if you were the ones that had to read members disrespecting each other, disrespecting SEGA, acting like total raving lunatics. and getting in civil wars and personal arguments over a fucking video game and getting so desperate to see the game that they were willing to leak the entirety of the game 3-4 months before its release, maybe you would be utterly disgusted at your memberbase too. And don’t even get me started on the whole “green eyes” debate… jesus fucking christ.
Given the way I’ve seen our members act both in past and present, I have very little sympathy. This isn’t the first time we’ve had severe attitude problems as a result of some controversial game announcement and I already know it’s not going to be the last. Of course, that’s not to say that our entire userbase is full of disrespectful children–we have plenty of intelligent, rational posters and I appreciate their presence to the ends of the earth–but the loudest and more prominentIy featured ones do little more the bandwagon, call SEGA a bunch of douchebags, and present their opinions as fact. It’s not only a pain to read, but, frankly, it’s embarassing as fuck. I’m embarassed to be part of the staff when this kind of shit happens, and I’m sure it’s embarassing to be associated with the place too when people act like that. It’s not how we want to–nor should–be represented.
I think the day the memberbase gets our respect invariably in every single situation is the day they act respectable. Until then, excuse our dust if they annoy the everloving hell out of us, considering we pour all of our free time into maintaining the place with little-to-no reward on our own ends. It’s very much a volunteer position, and we shell out money to maintain it. I don’t think you guys are getting a horrible deal with that in mind.
Everybody’s bitching and whining was free and public to read for everyone, and I read most of it until I finally got sick of it. You’re not the only one who’s read most of the green eyes/physics/model whining, and bitching and raging over it doesn’t make you anymore special.
I understand where you’re coming from. What I’m not understanding is why you didn’t think to do or even say something about it sooner. It didn’t even have to be a big dickish statement calling out all the fuckers who debated about and extrapolated the most infinitesimal of details. It could’ve been something like “Please don’t talk about this, because of this this and that. We ask that you use your freedom to speech and honest debate with more respectability than maligning a development team over piddling trivialities would merit.”
Put some pressure on your fanbase if you’re sick of the shit they pull all the time, and let your thoughts and goals as a respected administrator be made well aware to everyone before unsatisfactory behavior is further condoned until such predefined limits you decide upon.
Would you like me to dig up the various statements that all of us made basically to the effect of what you just proposed? It gets drowned out and ignored no matter how “respected” you are; people cared more about getting information on the game and flaunting their own thoughts as fact than respecting each other or honoring our respectful requests to do exactly that. I recall at one point I had to practically launch a crusade against the behavior, and all it was met with was more resistance. It’s extremely off-putting.
This resentment doesn’t come out of nowhere, I’ll tell you that much. It’s getting increasingly more difficult to stop any kind of hivemind behavior without being a total aggressive asshole about it, because that’s all people seem to pay attention to and respond to. You didn’t see news headlines to the effect of “Forum Administrator Promotes Respect and Understanding of Each Others’ Views,” that’s for damn sure.
Oooh my GOODNESS!!!!
I gotta say, congrats Sega, you have managed, unconciously of course, to pretty much tear your fanbase apart. Not that it’s their fault. Of all the things I would have predicted about the journey to sonic 4′s release back in January, the inner turmoil that is now occuring (and has been), would have never, and I mean NEVER come any where close to crossing my mind.
For me, a new light has been shed on the classics. Not only are they ‘perfect’, but they are also extremely volatile. So volatile, in fact, that when sega tries messing with them in any way (‘messing’ being neither positive nor negative, and not including ports), their fanbase EXPLODES. If the year was 2012, I wouldn’t be surprised. In fact, I believe that the classic sonics may be the most unstable, explosvie classic series EVER. If this is what happens when they try to bring it back to life….I really don’t know what to say. Sure dosn’t happen with any other series.
The sonic fanbase has been twisted and turned in on itself, contorted beyond recognition of what it was previously. Ok, it’s not the end of the world, but just reading these comments and seeing what’s happened to everyone (myself included) since the announcement of this game…it is simply UNREAL. I mean, look at us. This is insane!!
As far as commenting on what this particular article is about: I do give props to Tweaker for actually responding to what some have said. Now, I’m not a member of Retro, though I’ve gotten to know them something fair recently–I also am not a moderater or hold any position of authority on that site nor any site, for that matter. So I really can’t comment on what they did, in terms of handling it right and wrong, and I wont. I still have an opinion however, and will only say that, well…I’ll save it for another time, when it can actually make an effect.
I’m not going to say whether sonic fans are good or bad, or who’s fault all of this is, if only because it’ll add to the mess. However, I will say that it’s a shame things have gotten this choatic, because it is chaos. I’m sure Sega will think twice before deciding to do anything like this that’s directly involved with the classics in the future. When it’s all said and done, we will ALL have learned much.
In the end, it saved the haters money. Just think of all the people who saved $60 on Sonic 2006 when that game was leaked. Sure told a different story than the commercials.
And this is no different of all the leaks of Sonic Unleashed. We knew who Chip was before they even had his shadow on the fucking website! For christ sakes!
If Sega wasn’t so secretive about this, we wouldn’t have gotten the impression that they were somehow ashamed of it. Lord knows, from the vids, they wern’t using this time to make it…ya know..better?
All in all it saved retrofags and newfags alike $5 or more from buying a slap together, rehash to satiate the fans. I always said this game should be called “Sonic 4: Shut the Fuck Up Already” and all this bitching and whining just gave a new meaning to the title.
I’m the kind of guy that gives the new Sonic games a chance, yet don’t get my hopes so high I break my ass when I fall. I dig through the crap and find the elements I like, no more no less. I’m a collector, not an obsessor.
All the retrofags hate the fact no love was put into the game, all the newfags hate the fact it’s not like Unleashed or some bullshit. No wonder Sega keeps making shitty games, cause they think you all don’t care anyway!
Screw this, I’m gong back to reading my no pictures UK Sonic novels. Least they have a good story and don’t have fans bitching that they suck.
uh…sonic novels???? my sonic curiosity has been piqued
@Goodman
Yes novels and choose your own adventure gamebooks all from the United Kingdom printed back in the day. Good stories. Go to amazon and search for them.
Sonic the Hedgehog in the Fourth Dimension
Sonic the Hedgehog in Castle Robotnik
Sonic vs the Silicone Warriors
Keep in mind that these are based ont he UK continuity with characters you’ve never heard of and Sonic being a big douche most of the time. If anything, his relationship with Tails is more realistic than the mushy hero worship.
Good stories, no fanbrat bitching they suck, no pictures, but good stories.
Tweaker: “When you get signed statements from SEGA employees or something equally compelling, then you can freely place the blame on us for “encouraging the leak.”
Again, from the front page of Sonic Retro:
“Forum member infinity has been at it again, and this time his target has been Lost Labyrinth, with 3 all-new shots, two of which confirm the return of the Sonic 1 Labyrinth badnik Burrobot.”
And Tweaker wrote: “Forum member infinity has somehow managed to obtain a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 4’s soundtrack and has posted it on the forums!…My thoughts? Splash Hill Act 1 was just really shoddily done; this soundtrack is nowhere near as bad as I thought it’d be!”
Lost Labyrinth hasn’t been revealed on Sega’s site. Sega’s recent poll on what information to reveal, homing attack or music, was made irrelevant because of the soundtrack leak. That did not stop the admins from commenting on the soundtrack, positive opinion or not. It conflicted with Sega’s release schedule, period. Hence the confusion that this is apparently now a VERY BAD THING to circumvent.
So yes, it’s a surprise to most that a Lost Labyrinth leak is worthy of comment and promotion by the admins, an entire soundtrack leak is worthy of comment and promotion by the admins, but the final level and ending leak deserves a “You’re all fucking despicable.”, “You’ve gone and ruined a game three months early”, and “You fuckers fucked up BAD.”
So I think you’ve made yourselves quite clear. Half the game is leaked and you can discuss and promote it on the front page. The whole game and some assets, on the other hand, and you can tell the community to fuck off.
@Tweaker: In that case, perhaps you’re doing all you can after all. Still, given all the evidence or leaking and discussion this game has had, shutting down Sonic 4 discussion seems to be too little too late, but I say better late than never. It’s about time there was a crackdown.
I don’t understand how these past examples keep being brought up as if they still apply now. They don’t. You can read our old articles all you want and they won’t be making any kind of point. I delete them and it does nothing except give you less fuel to use… so shit, maybe it is worth taking them down.
And your “is” should be changed to “was.” It was okay. Now it isn’t. Simple! I don’t get what’s so difficult to understand about this.
Amen SmokeyFlame! Amen!
This is why I stick to other mediums now. Hell, Archie Comics are better than all this drama over garbage anyway.
Sonic is obviously hallowed ground for most fans, Sega is basically saying “Let’s dig up the temple and build a mall to make money”
Mario don’t have these problems, or hate. What gives?
Actually, you know what? No. You condoned more of this behavior than you thought of prohibiting it, and when you decided enough was enough, footage of the entire game had already been leaked. SmokeyFlame’s right, but I’ll still say better late than never.
I agree with the Sonic Retro admins, actually. Things got out of hand in a really big way. I would have been saying so on the forum itself, but it turns out that shit like this only goes down while I’m suspended over Shark Week stuff. Bah…
Tweaker, you guys have my full support on this. Whatever that’s worth coming from a random nobody like me. =P
@Chris
Yeah, I’ve read some of Fleetway, but not much; I’m more of a SatAM continuity guy. Thanks for the info though, I’ll check into it.
You should have saved yourself some key presses and simply said “please don’t ban me KTHX”
That was a reply to Solaris Paradox BTW
Tweaker: “And your “is” should be changed to “was.” It was okay. Now it isn’t. Simple! I don’t get what’s so difficult to understand about this.”
It was okay, and now it isn’t? Um.
Tweaker: “The community should have been clear on what was acceptable and what wasn’t because we frequently tell them what is acceptable and what is not.”
Evidently. I suppose those fuckers should get it straight, it’s clearly cut and dry and plain to see, right?
@Treleus:
Well, we had Shark Week. We were trying to do everything we could to fix the issues with discussion without outright preventing it, but apparently that wasn’t something we could accomplish with all the chaos going on.
@ Dr.Eggfang
That’d be funnier if I were actually in danger of being banned. =P
@ Tweaker
…Also, the April Fool’s gag, too.
Oh god damn it. This is why I can’t go away from the keyboard in the middle of writing something.
How exactly did we “condone” the behavior? I’ll once again point out that we didn’t make a single news story about anything past the first video, which we very readily took down as things started to get out of control. Moderating the forums was a lot more of a grey area as we weren’t particularly advised one way or another in how to handle leaks there. That’s why were didn’t start banning anything until it was a bit too late. I was already about to do something when Mad Gear got leaked, but when I went to bed that morning (lol), everything was already leaked when I woke up. That’s about when we put things into full lockdown mode. The timing of that occurrence is simply inconvenient.
It also didn’t help that infinity had decided to only post leaks in IRC; I used that as an advantage to alert SEGA of the leaks further in advance, but by the time they came back to us with anything shit had already hit the fan. We’re not a professional company, so what exactly should get taken care of and otherwise suppressed isn’t up to us to decide. That’s why we’ve been regularly consulting with SEGA on the subject in the first place! However, those people have lives and jobs to take care of, so they’re not always available. That’s life.
At the end of the day, you guys can bitch about how you “didn’t know,” but we’ve given you more than fair warnings in the past about conduct regarding Sonic 4 that you all chose to ignore. We can only be so fair until it no longer becomes feasible to be fair to everyone. What it comes down to is that Sonic Retro is our website and we’ll run it how we see fit. Considering our position in the grand scheme of the internet Sonic community, we must not be calling our shots too badly or we’d have been far less popular than we are now.
The Retro admins sound like bratty elementary school kids using cuss words to try and sound tough on the playground.
What’s with all the douchbaggery and dick measuring? All of you fucked up on all ends, and now we have to suffer, end of story!
“disrespecting SEGA,”
SEGA deserves to be disrespected.
I think what happened is unfortunate. I’ve liked an awful lot of what I’ve seen of Sonic 4, though I’ve refrained from watching all of the videos, and I think Sonic Retro is a fantastic site filled with moments of brilliance, as well as sheer insanity, and that the admins have done a generally very admirable job running it in their free time.
I just think that telling the people who frequent the forum that they’re fuckers who fucked up big discussing a game where the rules of what should be or should not be leaked were not yet decided upon or very clear is a bit alienating. After all, a stricter administrator would have banned someone like Tweaker for linking to and discussing the release of the full soundtrack ahead of Sega’s release schedule. The line is only drawn at the point where one can start to get into trouble, and I don’t think the community knew at what point trouble would come. Apparently it’s somewhere between Lost Labyrinth and Mad Gear :p
It’s a real shame, though. But it’s something to remember for Episode II. Maybe this will all be used as precedent for it; something that this situation sorely lacked.
Its not brain surgery Blitz. But you seem to think so; Which is fine… I think that about Calculus. But I don’t pretend to know that its just this amazing feat that takes Goliaths to perform.
smh…
it’s a VIDEO GAME.
it’s a FICTIONAL CHARACTER.
There ARE MANY things that HAVE been done wrong ALL AROUND THE BOARD. not just sega, the fans, or a PARTICULAR FORUM.
Whatever happens will NOT significantly affect YOUR LIFE…the REAL ONE.
LET it go. SO much damage has been done that it’s difficult to even access the who, what, when, where, why, how, and the ultimate result. Just realize that this is crazy.
This is why I left forums. The unnecessary drama they bring lol.
@musikman:
YESSS!!!!! Thank you sir, for the reality check. I love sonic, but at the end of the day, it’s just a game. Let’s remember this, people. We don’t live because of the internet.
>implying this isn’t real life
*where’s the Ronald McDonald image
Th-the inernet is not a big TRUCK. It’s, it’s a series of tubes!
This is all one big crock of alligator dongs.
Don’t get mad at a community, get mad at the person who leaked it, damn!
Wow, Tweaker has alot of time on his hands. Anyway, I see why it’s on parnernet now, but I still think it’s gay that any dev can download Sonic 4. And Tweaker, I’m just saying it sounds stupid when you guys are posting leaks, then getting upset when someone ends up leaking footage of the whole game. I understand you wanna be cool with your good standing with Sega, but I’m confused about why you condone the leaks to begin with in that case, since Sega is against the leaks most of the time. And how can you go too far? Leaked fotage is usually under the “you’re not supposed to see this yet” category. I know how once something like this is leaked, it’ll spread no matter what, so that further makes me wonder why you guys chose to silence the discussion (temporarily, I know) on a Sonic board.
@Goodman
Seriously though. If you are going to (pointlessly, I might add) continue to debate about this, at least act your age. I mean, I am 16, and the level of behavior I’ve been observing is unquestionably LUDICROUS for any age. Finger pointing, name calling…it is almost as if you ALL (YOU know who YOU are) have some tangible role in this situation that ultimately is bigger than the lot of you, and is quite frankly out of your hands anyway. These arguments in general are about at the level of trying to rationalize irrationality. It’s really sad.
It’s a shame that this is what things have really come to, and evidently the slide of fanbase relations (internally and externally) has made it nearly impossible for he people who need it most to GET A GRIP.
Why so serious?
On the OTHER HAND, it’s also a PRODUCT THAT A COMPANY IS TRYING TO MARKET AND SELL and leaks like these INTERFERE with their PLANS, which in turn has an affect on the REAL LIVES of REAL PEOPLE because it affects their REAL JOBS. So it’s not exactly CRAZY to feel GUILTY, ANGRY or otherwise NOT THAT GOOD about the situation.
Also, WRITING PARTS OF YOUR SENTENCES IN CAPSLOCK makes you sound CONDESCENDING rather than INTELLIGENT.
Just sayin’. I’m done being a smartass now. =P
*claps*
Solaris is awesome.
He’s a basement dweller
Tweaker, I know Sega didn’t directly tell you anything. It doesn’t even matter whether they “suggested” you do anything (which you seemed to imply in a later post in this thread.) You’re weaseling your way out of what I was saying, which regards the problem of you moderating Sonic Retro to please an upset Sega. What I was trying to help you see is that Sega fucked up and spilled the beans, and that they have effectively placed the blame on the community by putting you in a position where you feel like it is important not to spread information that upsets them.
Do you see? You could explain to me that they never even told you to take down a single thing, and that could still be the case, because it is through the confluence of your scaredy-cat “please love us Sega PR!!” deference and their big-shot “We would be happy to work with you to promote Sonic 4 and work with our reveal scheduled” implied distance. You (understandably!) want to remain their friend, and they (understandably!) only want you to help them, so when this shit gets out you made the easy (but stupid) decision of taking on some of the blame and censoring info so that you may perhaps salvage this PR partnership and enjoy further prestige as a result of your support from the mothership.
This is shit to your community and shit to your mission, which I stated above is to provide a discussion platform to Sonic fans, and many have stated above to be a home to those who obsessively comb through ROMs and transparently-coded promo websites alike. It’s also shit to Sega because it causes people to resent them. What you should have done is to email Sega and say “Sorry someone leaked the details, and that our reveal plans are ruined, but as you know our rabid fans are going to have a lot of fun examining, discussing, praising, bitching about, analysing, modifying, and remixing all the content that someone unfortunately leaked to the public. We sure would be willing to help you with your PR efforts going forward, though! Let’s hope you can plug those leaks.”
All this nonsense about how bad it was for the game to be leaked, or the entitled behaviour of the Sonic community is irrelevant and moot. The damage is done, the community is always going to be the way that it is, and it’s nothing to do with the stupid mistakes Tweaker and the other Retro admins have made in cracking down on this content. They are thinking short term and pissing off their community.
All I will say is this, watch SEGA go to new lengths now to protect this sequel. I bet you that they will redo the music score and now possibly the ending in order to have major success for that potential new audience that SEGA is going after. This could piss off sonic fans in general. But it is just a theory. All I am saying is that i would not be surprised.
@glem3 actually the final boss of sonic 2 was actually HARD cuz you didnt have any rings
*claps*
Suitcase is awesome.
Okay, so SS wrote something up on this whole issue. Check it out: http://www.sonicretro.org/2010/04/sonic-4-why-we-did-what-we-did/
Hopefully I won’t have to clarify anything further here.
Man, this really just sucks for everyone, doesn’t it?
This was a fucking ridiculous leak. Who the hell decides it’s fine to show the entire game three months early? Really?
On the other hand, SEGA, fix your mockery of a security already, JFC.
Eh. Hopefully it’ll blow over, eventually, and be fixed for ep2.
This is a level beyond get out 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbMLphi7HQU
i call it get out 3
(Although I also agree that the blame shouldn’t be on people who just watched it. The leak is the problem: once that’s happened, the damage is done anyway…)

“Only when the entire game was leaked, the line was crossed?! Sonic Retro, you so crazy.
Also, why oh why did Sega go to Sonic Retro, of all places? Really? Does that mean we should all register at Retro and talk about how much the game meets nobody’s expectations (after the discussion ban is lifted)? Why would you keep something like this a secret? If everybody knew Sega was listening I’m sure Retro could have created a proper method of getting ideas to Sega in a way that a) wasn’t completely retarded and b) didn’t result in anarchy. Oh Sega. You continue to amaze me every single day.”
From Rez
“be good, guys, and we’ll refill your trough
there’s a good pet.
why are the community there putting up with this sort of weird authoritarian behavior?
why not just move to a new forum?”
@Solaris.
lo btwl that’s just habitual when i am trying to stress something. (the whole caps lock thing) but sorry if you took it that way. :\
But seriously though, what I’m trying to get at is why everyone is so angry? All I’m trying to stress is that only the people directly involved/affected should be the ones angry, and that it shouldn’t necessarily channel to EVERYONE ELSE. (see, not condescending) At the core of it, it won’t help anything. If anything, having everyone upset will make it worse. I’m more worried about the consequences of this rather than who is to blame or who isn’t being fair or etc.
Man, the same thing that is happening with the Sonic 4 thread is the same thing that happens with other Sonic games as well. If new info, images, or other media is leaked it is posted in the thread for those that want to know more about the game. Videos do not play automatically so its not like people are getting spoilers when they don’t want it. Pictures are really the only thing that can’t be avoided.
I’m not with the staff on this decision. If people don’t want to be spoiled then all they had to do is avoid the thread.
Okay, SS cleared up a lot about the situation. I can actually agree with you now, Tweaker. The community needs to get its act together about as much as SEGA and/or Microsoft does concerning leaks and PartnerNET
