An Image Problem, Acknowledged
For as much flak Sonic games in recent years have been given, it was a bit of a surprise to find that the voters in our TSSZ News @Issue poll felt the fans were most to blame for the franchise’s current ailing reputation.
Out of 881 votes, 55 percent felt Sonic fans were the biggest contributor to the problem. Forty-five percent felt Sonic games were.
The poll results highlight how varying fan preferences, especially been older and newer fans, have occasionally ballooned into conflict between factions.
A new poll is now available for you to vote on. You can discuss the results of this poll below in our comments area.

I think that is a bit of both really but someone cant be made to like a game if they dont.
Of course its the fans, they make any Sonic game seem 100x worse than it actually is (this will come to pass with Sonic 4).
I can bet tht Sonic 4 will get scores in the 7-10 range by major reviewing sites and publications, but Sonic fans will nitpick the hell out of it and only focus on the bad parts while completely missing the good ones.
I find it funny, as when games like Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic Heroes came, mostly the fans were supporting them. Fans didn´t criticied that much until awful games like Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic 06 came. Oh yeah, Sonic fans fault for not eating everything they got thrown
)
Anyway, found it funny how Sonic Unleashed was supposed to be nearly as bad as the other two, when is clearly a lot better in every aspect than them, even with the stupid werehog gimmick and that awful last boss.
I’m impressed that the “fans” vote won out on a Sonic-focused site like this, even if not by much (55-45 isn’t exactly a landslide). I voted “fans,” mainly because of the negative hype about Sonic Unleashed. I had a really bad time finding a sensible review shortly after release. I eventually found Hardcore Gamer’s review, which was well-written and gave it a 9 (for the HD versions, mind). Now, I’d say the score was slightly inflated, but the text was quality and matches my thoughts on the game quite well. It makes me sad to think that rabbid fan hyperbole probably caused a number of people who WOULD have enjoyed the game to skip it.
Get this, if the Sonic games were actually well-made, there wouldn’t be an “ailing rep”.
CONSPIRACY!
Well, the official definition of “reputation” is the “overall quality or character as seen or judged by people in general.” The games could be absolute crap, worse than Sonic 06, but if people loved them, Sonic would still have a good reputation.
Games attract the fans, not the other way around.
Before Sonic 4 was announced, this would have been a landslide vote in favor of “the games”. I think the only reason people are voting fans is because of all the drama surrounding Sonic 4, and the numerous articles and blogs that have been written ABOUT the Sonic fandom since it’s announcement.
I voted fans because of that Sonic 4 boycott. The idea of protesting against something just because it isnt made the way you want is just pathetic in my opinion. If your going to protest against something it has to have a meaning. The Sonic 4 protest doesn’t have a meaning. It’s just a group of overgrown kids having a temper tantrum because they not having it they’re way.

LOL! So if you don´t like a game, and you see that the engine behind it is laughable at best, you don´t have a meaning. Yeah, yeah…
So Sonic reputation is low because there are fans who dislikes Sonic 4. Great point. You know, Sonic reputation was starting to be really low by the time Shadow the Hedgehog was announced, around 5 years ago.
I have to agree with the fanbase being the biggest factor in the series lower reputation.
“LOL! So if you don´t like a game, and you see that the engine behind it is laughable at best”
Fans treating there opnions like there facts….another reason why its fanbase’s
fault
@Crysore:
Exactly what i was gunna say but you beat me too. We’ll have words later lol.
Sonic 4 doesn’t have bad engine, it just doesn’t have the one you want which is why you people so much. You want the game exacly the way you want it and to hell with anyone who thinks any differant.
It’s definitely the fans. In the last 10 years the only games that have been outright bad are ’06 and ASR Wii. Everything else was simply a matter of taste.
