Part of the AXSX Fan Project
In December, when a wide array of new material from the unpublished Sonic X-Treme was released to the community, chatter grew on the viability of fans reconstructing the game. One key element was missing, though: An engine that accurate depicted X-Treme’s fisheye camera lens design in real time.
It appears that hurdle has been overcome. Yesterday members of the longtime AXSX project posted a short proof of concept showing an accurate, fluid lens in action. You can have a look at the lens in action in the video below.
In development since 2006, AXSX or Andrew Xeniczone Sonic X-Treme was first imagined as a X-Treme styled SFG. It purpose has since evolved; members are now focused on producing a multipurpose engine for both X-Treme SFGs, 2.5 platforming, and Sonic Adventure styled games. The fisheye lens and its attributes could go a long way toward realizing that goal. Upon the engine’s completion, it could also open the door wide to interest in re-creating X-Treme proper from what’s been released. We may be witnessing the stepping stones toward something quite exciting, and to be a part of it, all you have to do for the moment is take a look at the video below.

The camera looks great, but the game itself has a long way to go.
Man this game may have looked good if it came out
Wow.
Trippy.
The Sonic X-Treme recreation headed by SANiK did this years ago. All you have to do is use the correct projection matrix.
Looks like the game engine has a lot of work left.
I was JUST wishing someone would take on a project like this the night before this was posted. That’s insane.
Would have been amazing… oh Sega…
whoosh, the japanise website of sonic 4 is f**king awesome! ^_^ always better than UK and USA they are! Jeez, I wish I lived there… lol
