On EBay, A Rare But Very Expensive Genesis “Blockbuster”

Is it Really Worth $50,000?

If you thought the $4,000 Sonic plushie was a bit steep, you may want to steer clear of this ongoing EBay auction, where one cartridge is costing a pretty penny.

The auction is for Blockbuster World Video Game Championships II, and it’s a Genesis cartridge with titles developed by Acclaim Entertainment, now technically defunct.  It was used during competitions Blockbuster hosted in the 90s, contained alternate editions of Judge Dredd and NBA Jam, and the seller claims less than five exist.

The latter point may be justification for the seller’s $50,000 asking price.  There’s no bidding here–one can either buy it or make an offer.  But at least you’ll get free overnight shipping.

The auction may be less for fans and more for bonafide collectors, and may exist only in attempts to cash in on other recent auctions for rare gaming items.  Still, there appears to be some interest in the item.  Thus far, 30 offers have been made for it; all have been declined by the Miami based seller.  The sale ends in 8 days.
