Role of Sonic Retro, Sonic Stadium Now Unclear
What was a touted “joint-exclusive” release by Sonic Stadium and Sonic Retro on Monday–even by Sega blogs and employees–has now inexplicably shifted back into official hands.
Just announced minutes ago is a post by Sega of America community manager Kellie Parker on the Sega forums, directing those interested back to the Sonic 4 blog and the US Sega blog for the announcement, which will begin at 6PM tonight:
I wanted to provide some clarity on what’s happening today.
We’ll have the official announcement at 3pm US Pacific time on the SEGA blog and Sonic 4 website. That will be followed by RubyEclipse’s appearance on the On the Spot show on Gamespot at 4pm US Pacific time.
To be clear, that’s 6PM in the eastern United States, 3PM in the western US, and 11PM in the UK. That is a slight change from Monday’s announcement that pegged the timetable in the morning for US fans, and in the evening for UK readers.
As noted, the 6PM text release will be followed by RubyEclipse’s appearance on GameSpot’s On the Spot broadcast beginning from 7PM ET–something we reported earlier today.
The GameSpot booking certainly devalues any exclusive Sonic Retro or Sonic Stadium had earlier this week, especially if the purpose of the appearance is to reveal core material like a release or more official gameplay video. But in light of this new development, that may not be what both sites were necessarily touting Monday. You may remember several hints being dropped for a larger community project related to Sonic 4 in recent weeks. Something to that effect, involving both sites, could be part of the 6PM release.
TSSZ News will be here to cover both Sega’s official release and the subsequent GameSpot appearance as they happen. Forget the “exclusive” moniker–this is now pretty much a free-for-all, and we’ll be here to cover it all. Thanks to ShadiWulf for quickly sending the information into us via our News Tips system.

…I’d laugh so hard if it turned out to be another badnik.
I guess they really were just trying to rope fans up early for this announcement by making it seem like they were working with these two communities exclusively, or just another case of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing.
Oh that’s just annoying. Why 11PM for the brits? I felt good that I would be able to get a good night sleep, but now that feeling just died and was replaced by annoyance.
Lol, no rewards for Stadium/Retro for sucking up to Sega.
@ Pickle
If it was another badnik I would piss myself with laughter
Just to clarify — the exclusive that Sonic Retro and Sonic Stadium had was to announce that there would be an update today. They were not scheduled to carry today’s announcement exclusively. There has been no devaluing of their participation in today’s announcement.
“Lol, no rewards for Stadium/Retro for sucking up to Sega.”
Retro hate Sega you fucking moron. Your butthurt is showing.
An announcement that there’ll be an announcement in a few hours time…
Yeah, that’s kinda lacking in the ‘juicy exclusive’ department
Now I can see that Sonic 4 has been delayed, I hope that SEGA decided to released it in CD format but completed of course
that would be awsome
@ Sonic Unleashed (SU)
Unfortunately for those without broadband internet connections, it will be very unlikely for it to be released on a disc format, mostly because SEGA has started taking a look into dominating the digital media, just look at the fact that ASR and a new Genesis/MegaDrive collection are on steam
i think this game is a really good idea i think the game should stay like all the newer reinvented games and should follow a storyline and have movie like footage that follows a gameplay stage going idea. i think some of the typical characters should come into play that probably haven’t even been used yet, such as (scratch, grounder, ashura, bunny)
i like the sonic 4 the hedgehog idea but i would like it even better if you would put in it ashura the hedgehog sonic’s brother. bring back bunnie rabbot. um scratch and grounder were good henchmen.
