Coming to Both Consoles in Fall
Today, both American and European divisions of Sega affirmed something you’ve known for months if you’ve been following us–both Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will be coming to the current crop of HD consoles. They will be the first two in a series of Dreamcast classics Sega plans to release on both Microsoft’s XBOX Live and Sony’s Playstation Network. That may be the real news to come out of today’s official unveiling.
Both games will include online leaderboards and achievements, but in Sonic Adventure’s case, that’s been known since the game leaked onto Microsoft’s PartnerNET service as early as January. Crazy Taxi fell to the same fate in April. Sega’s release, which is below, claims the games will incorporate other “all-new enhancements” such as “high resolution visuals,” but judging from the screenshots Sega released as part of its announcement today, Sonic Adventure will retain its 4×3 SD resolution, while Crazy Taxi will be stretched to widescreen.
You can take a look at those screenshots in the gallery below, following Sega’s official release, and judge for yourself. Both Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will also be on display next week at E3.
LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (June 10, 2010) – SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced plans to bring classic titles from its popular Dreamcast™ console to Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PlayStation®Network later this year. Sonic Adventure™ and Crazy Taxi™ will be the first two classics made available, with Sonic leading the pack in Fall 2010 for the 11th anniversary of the launch of the Dreamcast in the United States.
Each game is based on the original Dreamcast incarnation, featuring all of the gameplay that older players fell in love with, whilst allowing a new audience to discover it for the very first time. The games incorporate all-new enhancements and features such as high resolution visuals and surround sound. Online leader boards are now implemented, allowing players to compare their skills with friends across the world! In addition to this, all-new Achievement and Trophy integration will be available for each game released.
Launched on September 9, 1999, the SEGA Dreamcast is one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed consoles of all time. Featuring a software library of over 650 titles, the system was widely hailed as being ahead of its time, and was the first to introduce online console gaming, with Internet support for games through a built in modem.“The Dreamcast is fondly remembered by a large community of dedicated fans as a console that was ahead of its time in terms of graphics, quality and online gaming” commented Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. “There are few things that are more requested from us than making Dreamcast classics available for download in today’s digital market place. We’re very excited to begin offering gamers our beloved Dreamcast titles again on the current console systems.”
Sonic Adventure will be available for download in Fall 2010. Both Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will be on display at SEGA’s booth (#2023) at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Sweet! now how about that Shenmue.
I want it for PSP cause I would love to take the Sonic Adventures, Shenmues and others on the go. Trophies/Achievements look cool though!
I hope they put online multiplayer for it
It’s about damn time.
So I’m guessing they’re calling Sonic Adventure DX ‘With less features’ Sonic Adventure? As much as I like DX that’s really lame considering some people really loved the original version.
Fall? Are you serious? The game was already complete and ready for marketplace release 6 months ago, this should have been released shortly thereafter. I guess summer would have been acceptable had they of taken the extra time to add some extra features and support for widescreen, but not only is nothing being changed, but we still have to wait another 4 months at the least??? That’s just insult to injury. It has been known since last September that this game was coming to xbla and psn, and was rumored even before then. Come on Sega, does it really take an entire year to rerelease a 1990′s game that’s being given no upgrades what so ever these days? Absurd.
Lazy port of the PC port of DX, it’s annoying that they even try to call this the Dreamcast Sonic Adventure what a load of revisionist history!
I’m confused…SEGA says these are based on the original Dreamcast versions, and the commenters are calling BS before the game’s release? Don’t get me wrong…I’m just fine with them releasing DX, whether they call it that or not. Though the separate ESRB ratings still puzzle me.
Why are the screens they released for Crazy Taxi in widescreen and the ones for Sonic Adventure aren’t, though? Makes no sense to me.
If Sonic Adventure comes in 16:9…I’ll buy it again.
@ Stuffgamer1… that’s probably because the SA:DX features are going to be released as DLC at a later date after SA is released (which no doubt is just another cheap way of making more money by milking SA for all its worth). As for no widescreen support, beats me. Your guess is as good as mine on that one. They must be running into some minor complication with adding support on the 360 and PS3 and are too stupid to know how to correct the problem, or they are just gonna find some lame excuse to say that it “wouldn’t look right on a bigger HDTV” or something or other.
I said it once and ill say it again. Online Chao Gardens! please
@*SOS
I totally agree with you. The Adventure 2 chao garden concept was brilliant. Sad to not see it in most recent 3D sonic games. SEGA should bring back all the different types of chao as well.
oh hell yeah. this means that eventually sa2 will make it on xbox live and i am expecting online battles/races and online chao battles/races. I always was disappointed by my lack of friends that had sa2 battle and that could chao battle me. Hope they don’t disappoint.
@Ceejus: That would be counted as DLC for an existing game, then. DLC doesn’t need a separate ESRB listing. Having two ESRB listings suggests plans to release both versions of the game completely separate from each other.
If they can put one of the two games in widescreen, there’s no good reason they can’t do it for the other. Making an old 2D game widescreen can cause balancing issues, but that shouldn’t be a problem for 3D.
@ Stuffgamer1… true. I guess what I was thinking is that SA:DX had a different ESRB rating than SA, and thus the DLC would warrant the separate rating. Looking at the ESRB’s own web site however, tells me that all Sonic Adventure titles are rated E for Everyone. *shrug* That can only mean that SA:DX, if the rumors are of course true, is being rereleased as a totally separate game and not as DLC. Unless, ya never know… it might be an ESRB policy to treat the SA:DX features being added to SA in DLC form as a separate title. Afterall, in essence, what you are doing by adding the DLC is “evolving” the game into SA:DX, which was in actuality, a separate game. If none of these hypotheses are correct, then I have no idea what the two ratings could mean.
And as far as widescreen support is concerned, as I said, I totally agree. All I’m trying to say is that with Sega, you never get a good reason for anything, period. You sure do get tons of bad reasons and excuses though. We’ve seen this plenty of times in interviews where they’ll try to justify why their games received such negative feedback from reviewers. I’m sure there will be some sort of lame excuse as to why no widescreen support was added.
I’m well familiar with SEGA’s bad answers and excuses. Lock-on in Sonic’s UGC, anyone?
Oh, well, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what all this stuff is REALLY all about.
