Someone Broke Into the Glass House, New Details Within
It appears Sega brass are letting a few media outlets inside the enclosed Sonic Free Riders booth at E3…to look though, not to touch.
IGN was one of those outlets, and despite Sega reps still exclusively demoing the XBOX Kinect exclusive, the result was a six minute play-through and detailed explanation of the game mechanics and progress thus far. You can see the full demo at the end of this story.
Especially helpful in this demonstration, however, was the disclosure of some new information. In bullet point form, here’s what can be taken away:
- Six characters have been properly developed so far.
- Each character will have a specific set of boards, each with different statistics and powers
- Power-ups and items on display at E3 are not final and subject to change. This includes possible additions and subtractions
- Turn by leaning left and right, best jumps are formed by crouching first, that will perform a charge and allow for tricks. Physically spinning during the jump also adds to your trick.
- Good tricks will yield boosts
- Otherwise, mechanics is much like controlling a skateboard
- Board powers include items like “Rail” and “Punch”. Each power will allow for specific shortcuts
- Traditional level-up system with rings is still being worked on, “investigated,” and may not be relevant to this particular iteration.
Those are the new details coming from IGN’s Q&A at the Sonic Free Riders booth. You can take a look at the video below. Thanks to sonicsmashkirby for sending the news tip in.

Basically, all they really did for this demo is create one stage, six characters, and developed the control scheme. They focused all their efforts here on the controls. With that in order, they’ll probably start working on fleshing out the roster and stages.
