Sega Holds Sonic Anniversary Contest

Winners Get a Trip to Tokyo

Last year to mark Sonic’s birthday, Sega’s community team was very willing to give fans tons of free stuff without a lot of effort.  But this year, you’ll have to work hard to celebrate the hedgehog’s anniversary in style.

For the moment, this appears to be the surprise alluded to earlier this morning though not quite on the level of a giveaway.  Instead, it’s a large scale contest encouraging fans to submit video “showing off your love for Sonic” via YouTube, according to the contest page.  The YouTube account is a requirement to participate in the contest, which will end at noon Eastern time on Monday, July 12th.

Entries will be judged on a 35 point scale–30 base points awarded on “Creativity,” “Effort,” and “Entertainment” categories, with up to five bonus points awarded if the video promotes Sonic in a public setting.  Entrants will be widdled down to 10 finalists at Sega discretion, with those making the cut showed on the official Sonic 4 website. Viewers will vote, and two grand prize winners–one from America and one from the UK–will win a trip to Tokyo and to Sega Japan and Sonic Team offices.  They will get some legitimate playtime with Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and according to this video, it will be the finished edition.

Two first place winners get a 32 gigabyte iPod Touch, and 100 other random entrants will get various Sonic merchandise.
