Microsoft Announces Kinect Price Details

Will Sonic Free Riders be $50?

Today, Microsoft confirmed the $150 price point rumored since E3 for the XBOX Kinect add-on.  That price will be about £130 in the UK, and €149 in the rest of Europe.  The sensor will come bundled with Kinect Adventures, allowing gamers to experience a Kinect ready game without separate purchases.

According to a Kotaku report, the price is for the peripheral and game bundle alone.  A revised “slim” XBOX Live Arcade setup with Kinect and 4GB of internal space included with Kinect Adventures will sell November 4th for about $300.  In Europe, the bundle will run €300.

The report suggests Kinect games will generally run $50 (about £40 in Britain), ten dollars less than a typical XBOX 360 game.  Will that price setup apply to Sonic Free Riders? Maybe not.  Microsoft today suggested the pricing will only be rigid for first-party fare, leaving third parties like Sega to price as they please.

Still, Sega has only discounted its Sonic titles from general MSRPs at a maximum of $10 at launch.  Most recently, Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing sold at a launch price of about $50 on both XBOX 360 and PS3–though today, most retailers will let you pick it up for just $30 and tax.  That suggests Sonic Free Riders may see a bare minimum launch price of $40–and there’s nothing stopping Sega from asking full price for it on launch day.  With that in mind and from what’s been seen thus far, do you think the assumed price range for SFR is fair?  Tell us in our comments section.
