A Terse Tweet & Public Statement, with Details to Come
One of the principal organizers of the now annual Summer of Sonic convention, Kevin Eva, has said via his Sonic Wrecks Twitter feed the 2011 fan convention, to be held next June 25th, will be the last he has a hand in.
“SOS 2011 will be the last with my involvement,” Eva wrote. “Will talk more on this another time.”
As a Sega Europe employee, Eva’s SOS involvement and coordination through official channels has been crucial in bringing the convention to prominence. But for many fans and attendees, he is an unsung hero; in the shadow of credit largely given instead to Sonic Stadium webmaster Svend Joscelyne. From time to time, Eva does make his feelings on that known publicly.
Though an overwhelming number of attendees declared SOS 2010 a success, numerous organizational mishaps–from long lines to broken controllers, agenda delays, and the lack of air conditioning–prompted sparse complaints, and in turn put Eva and Joscelyne on the defensive after the expo.
Because of the brevity of Eva’s remarks, the rationale behind his decision remains unknown, but as stated, will be explained at a later date. It is certainly a strange announcement so soon after SOS, but it’s one that may alter the course of the fan expo past 2011. We will keep tabs.
Tuesday Evening Update: Eva has said a little more on the matter–though not much more–via Sonic Wrecks:
SOS is over…and as some of you know I’ve said that after SOS 2011 I won’t be directly involved anymore. There are many reasons for this and I’ll go into them at a later time, but SOS 2011 will be my last as an organizer and the last Sonic Wrecks will contribute anything beyond a possible appearance.

I think it might have something to do with him constantly being heavily worn down by the whole thing. Last year was especially hard on him, He does deserve a break, I reckon, especially considering the event happens on top of his actual job.
I don’t think it’ll change the nature of the event that much, just because he isn’t there to run things doesn’t exactly mean he can’t convince SEGA to bring the awesome there.
It’s not like this guy is going to dedicate his life to organizing “Summer of Sonic” conventions. The original organizers of the first annual Star Trek conventions only did it a few times before getting worn out. If people want this to continue they’ll have to find other people to help the process.
well, only one employer right?
if sega of europe can’t do this annual convention, i hope sega of america or sega of japan can do!!!
