On EBay, an “Original” Sonic for $10,000

Problem is, It’s Not so Original

A Chicago based seller on EBay probably won’t sell what’s called “the original” Sonic the Hedgehog by the time the auction ends later today.

In cartridge form from the Genesis era, it’s listed in “very good” condition, and under a very specific set of circumstances, it could fetch something close to its starting bid price of $10,000.

There’s a big problem for paying that much, however, and you’ve likely spotted it in the above graphic.  The use of ESRB ratings on box art didn’t come into practice until 1994, and for a short period before, Sega used the Videogame Rating Council to police itself.  The original Sonic was released in 1991–and for that reason, early copies don’t carry any ratings.

That it’s a second or even third generation copy is likely why no one has bid on the item thus far.
