The 1st Sign of Gimmicks, or the 1st Sign of Multiplayer?
The shot you see in our graphic here, and in full below, is going to get a lot of attention among fandom really soon.
It’s from Amazon’s Japanese portal promoting Sonic Colors. In it, you see a regular blue Sonic…closely followed by a reddish-pink Sonic. Both characters have an antenna device on their head, and both have their own boost gauge, lives counter, and ring counter in a previously unseen stage.
On first sight, this would indicate a confirmed two player mode, and some fans speculate it’s either a co-op or competitive race mode. That would add into the mix multiplayer talk that has to this point been dodged by Sega brass in interviews. On the other hand, with so many characters in the Sonic universe, seeing a re-colored Sonic in any official setting is very strange, to say the least. And with antennae? Can you say gimmick?

Recolours? And Sonic Team nearly nailed it on this game…
I hope their not using stock recolors for multiplayer purposes (Remember Shadow the Hedgehog?). When they could use an actual character…like..ya know…Tails?
It would be a nice twist if Red SOnic acted like the Cosmic Clones from Super Mario Galaxy 1/2.. HIGH SPEED MIMICKRY FTW.
This is probably for those who don’t want to use another character and really want to use two Sonic’s. I know it always pissed me off when my friends pick a character that I like in a game and I can’t use him/her, it seems like this may be SEGA’s way of solving that.

As for the level, I’d say it’s a test level. But the red Sonic? If this game has co-op I’m officially hyped. Can’t wait.

Two sonics….One red, and the other is the original..Antennae…On each sonic? Really..Why do i have the feeling this might be co-op ala Knuckles chaotix. And there might be an electric shock connected from one antennae to the other to make each other stay together possibly…Imagine boosting with that, should bring up a couple of fun glitches

And how can a recolored Sonic with an antennae be a gimmick when Sonic has an antenaee on too? LOS did that thing with Four Swords multiplayer too, multicolored links. Not to mention that they already had multicolored Sonic in Brawl. Oh, and the whole Wisp thing is a gimmick too. You people will have a cow about ANYTHING. Quit your bellyaching until we know for sure what it is. >:|

Judging by the layout of this ‘stage’, it almost just looks like some kind of a beta test of something. It’s colorless, everything’s just a bunch of tetris blocks, and compared to the other settings, it’s just… -dull-, and uninspired. I can’t call this anything short of just a mere beta test of possible multiplayer functionality.
This image simply confirms multiplayer, which is hardly a bad thing. Anyone complaining about “OH NOES! A recolour!” or “OH NOES! Something is on his head! GIMMICK!” really needs to get their head out of their ass.
*ahem* The Sonic recolour is Sega’s way of having multiplayer without having to waste time creating models and animations for other characters. The antenna thing may has something to do with labeling which character is which (for example, “P1″ or “P2″ may usually be hovering above the Sonics, but it was removed from the shot) or maybe the antennas are different colours depending on the situation (for example: perhaps they’re the same colour if you’re playing co-op, and different colours if you’re playing head-to-head). Who knows? Either way, it’s probably nothing important, so don’t worry about it.

Actually, I take back what I said about this “confirming” multiplayer. The red Sonic could be a time-trial ghost. It’d be a bit odd if it was, but it’s easily possible.
I say it’s online multiplayer. Which is a good thing.
Im shame on SEGA, after all this years still ruin the games.

It’s official. Dr Eggman is creating Sonic Clones to take out the real Sonic.

Multiplayer? Even more of a reason for me to get this game.
Multiplayer is fun and all but, I definitely prefer singleplayer over multiplayer anyday, especially in Sonic games.
I don’t get why people are complaining, its looks like a competitive two player mode. Honestly, is there a need to create unnecessary drama by calling it a gimmick? Big woop!! Its a different colored Sonic. Everyone act like a baby, start whinning, and call the kettle black right now!!! That is what this fanbase is made up of right?

I personally think the recoloring was a fine idea. As long as you can choose what color you could be, because I would rather not be pink if I’m racing against a buddy.

Don’t worry, that’s not the thing that kills Sonic colors. The crappy linear roads, the emphasis on speed and boosts, the homing attack, the rails, QTEs, and all the automated crap are what kills it (along with ugly character design).
The game looked terrible from the start, so I hardly see why everyone is complaining about this now.

When Smash’s multiplayer was revealed, it was an epic trailer with tons of characters. When Sonic’s gameplay is revealed, it’s a screenshot with a red Sonic.
If SC ends up letting you choose from many characters, GREAT. However, Sega is still incredibly stupid for showing this screenshot first. You show the other characters FIRST! THEN you can say, “oh btw this is what happens when 2 people pick Sonic”.
But NO, again, Sega works backward, and shows us something uninteresting and stupid. Maybe there are other characters, maybe not. But either way, Sega is dumb, for different reasons depending on the situation.

The Wisps obviously probed Sonic and the antenna is a form of mind control. Red Sonic is obviously a badly colored clone of Sonic (Sonic X comic anyone?) and wants to prove who is the better of the two Sonics.

But, seriously, it looks like a test stage, so has anyone considered that the antennae and the recolor could be part of the test? Maybe the recolor is a placeholder for Knuckles, or Tails, or even Shadow! Who knows?

I am personally very hopeful for this to be multiplayer. I missed the SA2B multiplayer, and hoped for something along those lines back, even if it wasn’t the best thing in the world.
…Looking closer guys, I see some metal plating on both of the Sonic’s chest, as well as the wrists and ankles.
I think the blue one is as fake as the red one. These aren’t the real Sonic.

Well, I really thought its something cosmic clones/dark Rayman-esque, but now here comes second meter on HUD.
What if the game has secret multiplayer mode (co-op/vs./whatever), and if both players select single character, it gets recoloured?
What if it is ghost in time attack mode?
My guess is a time trial ghost, which is an amazing idea if thats true
Hm, i think about a race mode, time trail or such a thing. The Scorebar is single, also not splittet for 2 Player, that is a sign fpr Coop.
