The Sonic & Knuckles Recreation You’ll Never Play

Video of Mushroom Hill for a New Generation

If you didn’t know better, you may have thought it was something out of LittleBigPlanet, the next big thing in Sonic fan gaming–or even the next big surprise Sega has in store for the franchise.

In truth, it is none of those.  The video below–a short re-imagination of Sonic & Knuckles‘s Mushroom Hill Zone, may best be described as a proof of concept.  It is the work of Robert Medina, a freelance graphic artist with experience in 2D, 3D, web, and Flash.  3D Studio Max is his tool of choice, and it’s likely the environment in which Sonic and most of the 2.5D Mushroom Hill–complete with subtle ground and background effects–was made.  Adobe After Effects and Photoshop likely helped finish the job.

Initial reports–perhaps stemming from rays of hope–suggested this was the start of something bigger, perhaps a playable fan game.  There is no evidence suggesting the possibility, but that hasn’t stopped a lot of fans who have viewed the video from at least keeping the faith to see more.

The piece has even spread interally among the offices of Sega, and beyond words affirming the polish of the piece (and acknowledgment they’ve seen some snark amid the tipoffs,) it’s unclear if any attempt will be made by the company to reach out to Medina, and put this into practice.

So, for the moment, just watching what could be and using imagination from there will have to do.  The piece is below.  Thanks to SorcererLance for sending it in.  If you have news to share, be sure to share it with us by clicking News Tips at the top of every page.
