Funny–That’s Not Quite What we Were Told
Speaking to several media outlets at a recent Sega press event, Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka pointed to hopes of similar releases across all four of Sonic 4′s platforms–and subsequent drawbacks in developing for iPhone–as the reason for Sonic 4′s delay.
In the brief, Iizuka made mention of how Sonic 4 had initially been announced for just three platforms–XBOX Live, PSN, and WiiWare–evidently unaware that news of an iPhone edition leaked just minutes after the official web portals opened in February.
“The team wanted the game to work really well on the iPhone with the same stages and the same kind of mechanics as the console versions, but it didn’t really work the way the team imagined,” Iizuka explained. “What they did was they kept the iPhone version closer to the original and they went back to the console version and changed some stages to be better playable on console. That’s the reason behind the delay and the extension in the development schedule.”
While a lot of other media outlets seems to place blame directly on iPhone’s mechanics for the delay, Iizuka’s words indicate the opposite; that iPhone’s tilt controls in certain areas–like the minecart–wouldn’t work on consoles. You may remember the now infamous leak of Sonic 4 to XBOX Live’s PartnerNet that had some form of tilt controls using the XBOX 360 controller in the maligned mine cart stage–a stage now gone from all console versions. The truth is, the iPhone edition was the one that was finished from the beginning.
There is, however, another part of the story we learned months ago. It came from a top ranking Sega official, and it contradicts Iizuka’s statement that the changes were more a “team” decision than anything else. We’ll tell you who he is and what he told us, on the record, later this week on TSSZ News. Thanks to Silverwind for sending this in. Coincidentally, cross-platform concerns was the same reason given by LOst explaining why S2HD was delayed so much! (And we all know that if he actually does make a release, he’s only going to release a Windows version anyway, since he doesn’t have a clue how to program for anything other than his precious Microsoft Visual Studio.)
These Sega people seem to be just about as consistent as certain Sonic fans I know. Funny how both teams are allegedly trying to “save” Sonic the Hedgehog… is there something I missed, or do blue hedgehogs actually bring out the worst in people?
@Zeh Mad Bloggah
You do realize that they don’t announce this through out the whole company, right?
Some hear what REALLY is going on, some don’t, and maybe there were rumors going around in the offices/offices’ that Sonic 4 was delayed because they wanted to fix it, or that that’s just PART of the reason, but someone fudged up the information and only left that in.
I mean heck, some of the higher ups at Nintendo sometimes don’t know whats going on with certain games.
is this real?

PS: finsd the video on youtube by typing in Sonic adventure 3 leaked pics.
TSSZNEWs wouldn`t publish this so i`m not bothering with the stupid news tip anymore…
so yeah tell me please!
That image has been around for a while now. I highly doubt it’s anything official, and if it was, it probably was made during the Sonic 06 “Hurr, let’s make Sonic epic u guize” stage Sonic Team went through for a while there. Nothing to be concerned about.
Also way to be irrelevant to the news story, bro.
blueblur : It’s fake … if it was real by now SEGA would annouce Sonic is getting a redesign & are working on SA3 … so yeah it’s fake
@Nomad: thanks ^_^ phew…. thought we were gonna have some steroid sonic lol
@Nomad: thanks ^_^ phew…. thought we were gonna have some steroid sonic lol
“@Normad: Also way to be irrelevant to the news story, bro.”
Does that mean that the picture wasn`t good enougth for the news or something?
PS: still thanks for telling me ^_^ sooooooooooooooo glad that sonic`s 20th isn`t going to look like a freak…. humanised freak… lol
sorry for chain posting all the time but when i played Sonic 4 the Mine Cart level was (in its own way) Quite fun, only frustrating to get around.. and jump etc… lol. I hope Episodes 2 & 3 aren’t going to take half of next year to come out
abit like this Episode 1…
Coming 2010….
Coming July 2010…
Delayed…. Late/Fall (USA) Autumn (UK) 2010…
lol. can’t wait for Sonic’s 20th AND I HOPE ITS HD!!!
Sega’s PR must be non-existstant if they keep allowing Iizuka to run his mouth like this, the guy has been on a spree the past few weeks and confirming pretty much everything he feared about him.
i wish they would stop giving excuses to keep us at bay and finish up the game. and i’m past the “I’d rather them take their time and make a good game than rush and have a bad game” spill that people always give. fact is, someone already said they’ve been working on this game since may ’09, right? and although i’m sure they’ve been rounding out the other episodes, it really shouldn’t take THIS much longer to release a game that was “so close to being finished”. July to August? Understandable. Even to September… that’s fair. But it’s still TBD. Come on now.
@Steve: I know what your saying, Its nearly november time (expected date/leaked date by that magazine article thingy) and SEGA still has a TBC all over the game -_- ahh…. lol
still glad that sonic is fake
he looked like he was hitting the gym!
*sigh* Iizuka, you need to take a page out of classic Sonic’s book — by that, I mean that I liked you better when you weren’t so talkative.
Iizuka should not be allowed to speak to the media
@OBJECTION
I can’t recall a case where Nintendo’s left hand didn’t seem to know what their right was doing…. Well unless you count Nintendo US and JP, but that’s more like the left hand not being allowed to interfere with the right.
@OBJECTION: I can certainly understand how rumors start from lack of information; that as well occurs in the Sonic fanbase. I guess you’re right about that point, but I still wonder if Sonic is perchance… CURSED.
Literally, I mean.
