Can Sonic Still Defy Slope Physics?
We conclude our daily coverage of the Tokyo Game Show with another video exclusive direct from the show floor, and if it is what we think it is, it may be quite significant.
First, know that no console edition of Sonic 4: Episode 1 was playable at the TGS. The only version one could pick up and play was the iPhone/iPod Touch version. That said, this is a version that appears built exclusively for display at TGS. In of itself, that makes this a new build. But peeks at Sonic’s running animation within Splash Hill indicate this may be “the” new build, the near-final build–and that the mobile port was afforded the same changes as the console counterparts.
This playthrough includes the virtual D-pad seen on most other Genesis ports to Apple’s devices. Something else you may notice is Sonic again standing on a slope–though it’s not nearly as severe as other examples and, compared to other classic Sonic fare, may be more acceptable. It only happened once, though–at the :47-:48 mark. At the very end, off-screen, is a tiny peek at both Casino Street and Mad Gear Zone.
That video is below.

Are you sure, glem? The running animation looks different to me, and truth be told that’s been the key indicator of new vs. old.

Looks very good! I hope I can switch off the spinning screen on loops though!
That actually….. looks kind of cool, I must admit. Seeing the whole screen spinning around like that as you go across loops. Neat gimmick.
i can’t see the video. can somebody please post a link?
Looking at the video again, Sonic looks to speed off screen–a noted hallmark of the new build from 1.5.
So, I will stand by the claim of it being a new build, for now.

You know maybe it’s for the best this build has easy as piss controls and the minecart stage that is “easy”; iPhone users suck complete ass at games.
Seriously, how the fuck can you be so sloppy playing Sonic of all games?
….and I still cannot understand why the screen rotates when going through a loop; so glad that’s not in any console edition.
I like how physic oddities happen in just about every piece of cam footage we have of 4
@Haru
Have you tried playing this game with virtual controls on a iPhone/iPod touch before? HINT they don’t work well at all regardless of player skill.
It’s the new build. I can tell by the updated sunflowers and the Sonic models, and also how fast it takes him to get into the full-run animation. Very nice. Love the small visual updates — looking like a true sequel (doesn’t mean it plays like one).
Either way, it takes him longer to get to full speed than the HD version. You can tell from at the start when he runs into the motobug, it should only take 4-5 seconds to reach max speed. They probably just added in a new animation and nothing else.
I love the screen rotates when Sonic going through a loop
IS SO AWESOME! >3<!!!
the newer build looks much better!
cant wait for the release date to be announced ^_^
Every time Sonic jumps or rolls into a ball, the screen should obnoxiously spin around really fast.
one thing i hate is how sonic falls leg spread when completing a big jump he should keep spining. but i guess im just nit picking.
someone said new sunflowers? True?
Iphone/pod/pad games suck ass! Its a rubbish game console thing lol.
cmon release date…
On PSN website,Sonic 4 comes in october 2010.
@Lucas Hinz: wow really? awesome! ^.^
I kind of wonder why they decided to make the actual screen rotate when Sonic enters the loop. It kind of makes me queasy when I look at it from far away. I do not know why that would happen, I have played Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. Is it really necessary for the screen to rotate as well?
The flowers don’t move when sonic runs past, the spinny feet doesn’t happen as often, and the blur effect was not seen in this video, I don’t think this is the updated version, maybe a newer version, but definitely not the final build..
By the way if you watch from 13-15 seconds does that look like a new sonic self boost move???
I don’t care about the physics all too much besides the wall-standing. I just want Sega to make Sonic 4 more about rolling and running around than homing attacks and pushing forward. If they could at least remove 3/4 the dashpads and homing chains in this game, then S4 will be 50x better.
@Cody Collins (Azukara): Yeah, it would be great if they did that =P
