More Details From Gamefest 2010 Madrid
Again Sonic Reikai and Sonic Paradise have clarified some details first reported last night concerning the next Sonic, and what we believe to be updates to classic Sonic levels for current generation consoles under the Sonic Anniversary banner.
First, we were assured the games–both Anniversary and the new Mario & Sonic, are real–and that’s why we’re not treating this as rumor. Translated from Sonic Reikai, here is a clarification on what style this new update will entail–apparently it will be a 2D/3D mix, in the style of Sonic Unleashed and more recently Sonic Colors:
The Anniversary is a compilation / remake in 2D and 3D (as unleashed, dropped but did not say it clearly. Well, when I said it was a remake of the best sonic stage, I asked “2D or 3D?” And He said, “2D and 3D”, then I asked again “but in 2D and 3D? (and pointed out the colors) and said señalandoal clors” 2D and 3D). He confirmed that rises Wii, DS, PSP and PS3. 360 is yet to be confirmed but is likely to also leave. even 3DS. did much stress upon it was for ALL.
So, for those crying foul over an unconfirmed XBOX360 release, don’t. We expect that is soon to come. We may even see something built especially for the 3DS. Remember, a Sonic title has already been confirmed for the new handheld.
As we told you earlier today, Sega’s Aaron Webber gave a firm no comment to TSSZ News when we asked him about details on this news at the New York Comic Con today.
We will continue to follow developments on this new Sonic–one we believe to be very real–in the coming days and weeks here.

NOOOO
Sounds good to me, if they can get the 3D parts right.
Before anyone starts bawwing.
By unleashed style they meant 2D/3D perspectives, not the actual game mechanics..durreeerrp
Yeah, basically, the levels will be designed in a similar fashion to Unleashed and Colors. That’s what I was thinking right from the start–the stages will be remakes of past Sonic stages, not in full 3D or 2D (depending on whichever each was from; e.g. GHZ appears only in 2D), but with stages designed in both.
My guess is that this is just a big ‘ole fanservice title, featuring remakes of past games with tons of playable characters. That’s what I’m hoping, anyway. If there’s a small plot built around it, fine by me, but I don’t anticipate it.
I do anticipate an ACTUAL plot-based Sonic game to come out, though.
HOLY SHIT YES.
I think this is the best news I’ve heard from SEGA in the past eleven years. There is nothing that could top this. NOTHING.
It makes sense when you think about it. This allows all the old 2D stages to remain in 2D while all the 3D stages can run in 3D while using the same game engine. It sounds like a solid move.
All systems that’s hell lot of work
Too bad this game wont include Shadow and ’06 stages, Cosmic Fall and Kingdom Valley are some of my favorite Sonic stages ever, and playing with better controls and physics would be a dream.
Skai Cyan@: yhe I would like that too
But still this is an amazing thing SEGA is doing, it’s kind of epic, nobody did it before right!! I’ll pay everything to see GreenHillZone 2D&3D, and stages from Sonic3&Knuckles… AWSOME
SEEEEEEEEGGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAA you’re the best!
Yes because they clearly won’t screw this up and tun those classics stages to in order to make them work in the Unleashed gameplay style.
If this is real then I guess those level remakes in Colors’ Sonic Simulator are some kind of prototype to gauge interest and experiment on the concept.
I’m not a big fan of the Unleashed style of switching. I’d rather have a choice.
It is kind of cool they are doing this. I’m just wondering how a collection of the best stages would work… is SEGA going to poll people asking to choose one stage from every Sonic game? And also, how would the Shadow and Heroes stages work?
I’m REALLY hoping for some Kingdom Valley! (Sonic) That is one of my favorite stages in any game ever made!
Tristan, you know what? This game could be the result of that poll on facebook a year back, where sega asked fans what their favorite sonic levels were. It really makes alot of sense, actually, making a game on fan feedback.
@ Edge.
They said “best of”. Shadow and Heroes stages sold separately
Fun fact: Before you freak out and start defending yourself all indignantly – That was a joke. I AM TEASING.
Personally, I don’t think they mean “fan favorites” or “statistically best” when they say it’s going to feature the best. If anything, they’ll probably just pick a few of the more iconic stages, a few of their own favorites, and whatever they think they can make work in the new style.
I mean, really, if you’re gonna be using the classic games as source material, there’s not a lot of ways to go wrong by using the term “best”. You could pretty much find a way to justify anything. As for some of the newer games, that wouldn’t require much thought either. It’s fairly obvious which of the new stages played the most fluidly and became the most stand-out stages from their respective games. I don’t expect to see any jewel shard hunting in my Anniversary game.
Holy fuck, SEGA…
I..wow..
DAY ONE BUY. I can’t wait to blast through previous levels of the Sonic franchise in the Colors/Unleashed style.
It truly looks like Sonic has found his calling to the 3D Genre, and that is the Unleashed/Colors engine. That’s glorious.
I would love to have lesser known stages like Bridge Zone and Route 99 in this, but I doubt they will be.
I’d love to see Bridge Zone redone just to hear the music get updated! <3
@Robinson: … Except an entirely new game.
Then again, the levels would have to be redesigned in order to suit the Colours gameplay style…
@Kits
Because Sweet Mountain is so much cooler than a remixed Hydrocity could ever be, right? Hooray for jellybeans? -_-
Disgusting.
I swear, if they turn Mystic Cave, Chemical Plant, Icecap, and all my old favorites into mindless roller coasters that play themselves, I will kill something.
@ ChaoticFox
I see what you did there!
Well, another sonic copilation; only this time it will serve as a collection of redesinged versions of the most iconic stages of earlier games, such as the Green Hill Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog, with a similar design to that of Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors. I’m hoping SEGA will get this right. Also it would be nice if they could incorporate redesinged music, variety of gameplay mechanics ( specifically platforming), a short story ( if there is one), exciting bosses with great music ( like the final boss from Sonic Colors) and, of course, useful power-ups, like the shields from Sonic 3 and the wisps from Sonic Colors. Further more, they should work on the camera, glitches, occasionally stumped controllers and cheap deaths.
Man I glad Sega also made the game for Wii, since that is the only current gen system I have. Thanks Sega!!!
the only bad thing is putting this on psp… psp sucks in general -__-
DD THANK GODD!!!
but the idea of this game is GREAT so far
