Is A Scoreboard Wipeout Possible?
As was the case with the XBOX Live re-release of Sonic Adventure, Sega’s latest 2D Sonic has now fallen victim to persistent cheaters and hackers.
Sega’s Aaron Webber affirmed via the Sega forums that the top ranks in the XBOX360 edition of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, at least, have been marred–notably by someone under the handle THEno1SonicFan, who also posted impossible times to SA. Webber said Microsoft is on the case and has just now taken action. TSSZ News editor Ryan Bloom has since confirmed THEno1SonicFan was outright banned from XBOX Live for this and the Sonic Adventure compromise.
“Props first to Microsoft, as they took care of banning a couple of the cheaters on the boards,” Webber said Wednesday.
A couple, but not all, as we’ve found. Ryan also checked out some of the other top cheaters, under the tags mokuro07 and wadco0l. Both these accounts and THEno1SonicFan had viewed similar videos, according to recent account activity. The former is especially suspicious as it holds so little Gamerscore, while the latter has no XBOX Avatar set up. We can’t confirm if these are duplicate accounts for THEno1SonicFan, but both remain active and functional as of the time of this article’s publication.
Webber’s words follow initial confirmation last week MS had been alerted to the situation. But that procedure might as well have been red tape, with nearly a week of inaction, and more compromises with each passing day. Wednesday’s news was welcomed, with ways to remedy future situations now being considered. But it could ultimately mean high scores and times on Sonic 4 leaderboards for XBOX 360 have to be wiped clean, though only as a last resort.
“Right now we’re trying to see if we can delete individual times from the boards,” Webber explained. “We know that we can go with a complete wipe of all times, but I don’t want to do anything that drastic just yet until we have a method to take care of the cheating in the future, too.”
You may remember a similar nuclear option was considered but never executed for Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, albeit under much different circumstances. In that instance, characteristic differences between bikes and cars were cited, but shortly after ASR fell victim to a serious glitch that did record low lap times. That forced Sumo Digital to individually ban times created under the circumstances.
As it stands now, Sega is investigating whether individual wipes are possible. Webber reiterated in a later post he doesn’t want to enforce the nuclear option.
“I don’t think this drastic a measure is really the best route, unless it’s the only option left,” Webber said. “I’d like to explore all other possibilities first!”

Yeah, when I went to the leaderboards I noticed these guy(s) scores were ridiculously high. I couldn’t really say at the time whether I thought they cheated or not, but I guess considering it’s borderline impossible to get a rating like that they must have cheated. Although, I hope they don’t wipe everyone’s scores clean, I guess I can always try and beat my previous scores if they ever do. At least I’ll have a reason to complete Sonic 4 a second time…
Given that players have to manually submit their Leaderboard scores anyway, if they wiped all the Leaderboard scores out, couldn’t we all simply re-submit them? The worst side-effect of that possibility would be a re-shuffling of any tied scores.
as of last week, i was number 20 in mad gear act 2, i was number 8 not counting the 999999999999 scores
That cheating asshole won’t be missed Microsoft should have acted on this earlier instead of adding useless features to the console
BAN THEM ALL FROM XBOX LIVE ETERNALLY YEAH!!!!
@Solaris Paradox
… How come no one’s ever tried that logic before?
I hope they also tackle the people on the Wii version. Someone has a score of “0:00:00″ which…of course…is impossible.
This isn’t the case with the PS3 version, is it?
Just make sure he never does that again.
@Sonick Psh, those times aren’t ‘borderline impossible,’ it IS impossible. There’s no debug mode as of this writing, so finishing a level in 0’00’00 or the popular 0’00’10 is outright CHEATING. Not to mention the Scores leaderboard ranking people in the insanely high numbers for a game that isn’t very exploitable- some kind of alteration method was used to increase the numbers that high. It’s not legit, and it’s not within Microsoft’s code of conduct.
My solution? I just went through 20 names of the cheaters, went to “File Complaint” and flat out marked them for Cheating. I even messaged a few of them(peacefully) stating, “Hey, I noticed you’re online(or have been offline, whichever’s the case) and was browsing the Sonic 4 leaderboards. I marked you for cheating, but please don’t consider this a message of harrassment. I’m just saying it’s again MS’S CoD and it’s very discouraging to legit Sonic players when the top 20 times and scores are nothing but hacked or altered times.”
If you can’t tell..I’m like a ‘lawful good’ when it comes to having a legit, fun time while gaming. It really irratates me to see more and more cheaters popping up on the leaderboards every other day. Something needs to happen, and hell, if that means wiping the leaderboards and banning every single cheater, then DO IT SEGA!!
..Just don’t make me upload my times again individually for each level for score attack then a second time for time attack. ;-; That took forever.
(Another reason I’m a little peaved was because I got an amazing time in Casino Street Act 2, only to find I was ranked 24th when really it would have been 4th place due to exactly 20 hacked times).
so would my score of about over 1million on Casino act 1 be considerd cheating? Altough SuperSonic earns you jackpots?
Of course not you’re playing the game the way it was designed and not using some hacked code.
@Dr Eggfang: oh.. phew.. good lol ^_^ Although i still need 2 update my scores.
