Details are Scarce, and Second-Hand
This is a story that, for the moment, you simply have to trust us on.
Early this morning, TSSZ News received an anonymous news tip that linked to the bulletin board reminiscent of the wild west, 4chan. That link was a thread started late Thursday by someone claiming to be a figure shrouded in secrecy and folklore–Wentos the Traveling Salesman.
We were able to see he linked to the latest Sonic Colors trailer with an accompnying message: “Glad I could help, guys.” It was later in the thread that Wentos claimed we was using the same credentials as before to access the website. “Before” was in January 2009, when Wentos stated the next principal Sonic title would be in the daytime stage style from Sonic Unleashed, and would better focus on platforming–something initially thought to be the mold of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I and still is to an extent, but also fits the bill of Sonic Colors nicely.
But most relevant in all of it was Wentos later in this most recent thread speaking about a third Mario and Sonic collaboration, something first disclosed allegedly during Madrid’s Gamefest 2010. In the thread, Wentos claims the next M&S won’t necessarily be sports related–meaning the Olympic ties may not be there. That wasn’t something immediately clear from the Gamefest discussion earlier in the month, but it does vouch for the authenticity of some, if not most of what was accidentally revealed by Sega Spain earlier in the month–if only in that a third M&S collaboration is in the works.
Here’s the problem: given how early in the morning the tip was received, this reporter could only view the thread on his mobile device, and could not get a screen cap. Threads on 4chan are flushed out quickly, and it only took a couple hours for Wentos’s words to be lost in the fray. A Google search of the link TSSZ News provided does indeed list a valid thread, but as of the time of this article’s publication the only hyperlink available is a current one, which redirects to a 404. We are waiting to see if Google will populate its server with a cached copy of the thread. But because of the circumstances, we are unaware of whether Wentos said anything significant beyond the tidbits above.
It is because of that snag and only that snag, admittedly a significant one, that we are treating this as a rumor. We know many of you will write off the value of this story for that reason, but also understand that we wouldn’t tell you this–much less cite 4chan’s /v/ in general–without a good reason. Keep in mind, when we held two separate polls regarding your thoughts on the validity of Wentos’s words, a clear majority felt he was right. So far, he has.
We will let you know anything more we hear. If you saw or were a part of the conversation Thursday night or early this morning and can help us gather something more concrete than what we have, we’d love to hear from you; send us a news tip.

PLEASE be an awesome platformer! PLEASE!
If it’s not a platformer or RPG I don’t think I could give less of a fuck.
WENTOS? Who the hell cares what Wentos says? He’s already been proven wrong (see: “optional characters”).
It depends on what he was ultimately referring to in the ’09 remarks–Sonic 4, or Sonic Colors. Robo-Sonic or even the Wisp powers in Colors could be considered “optional.” And we don’t have the complete Sonic 4 just yet.
And besides, you’re going to fly in the face of four correct points versus one where arguably the jury’s still out? Come on.

On come is some random anonymous posting on a image board polluted with obsessive trolls worth that many words? It’s bullshit just like the original post which was full of holes and praying on fan’s fears.
The idea that people working for a publisher know everything related to a franchise and development is huge misconception by fans. Wentos is a very very obscure character even by Sonic standards, only a diehard fan would latch onto it not some random employee.
A Sonic-Mario game coming up without the Olympics almost sounds like a given. I could’ve predicted that…
To be honest, I was expecting another “Mario and Sonic” that wasn’t sports-related, anyway.
I hope for a fighting game…not a platform, it would ruin everything… an rpg would be meh…
Wentos!? Is Wentos back!? I remember him! I remember him… wow… gives me some strange feeling here… just weird…
Who’s Wentos?
“Mario and Sonic Adventure” or something like that
I like the idea of a 2D/3D plattaformer with Mario and Sonic playable at the same time, some like sonic heroes or Banjoo Kazoie style. Sonic Runs, and Mario have Power Jumps…i dont know.
“On come is some random anonymous posting on a image board polluted with obsessive trolls worth that many words? It’s bullshit just like the original post which was full of holes and praying on fan’s fears”
Wentos was the one who disclosed nearly everything about Unleashed before it was even announced.
This dude has his credibility.
… I dunno what fails harder; the fact that some 4chan creep’s fake-hype-building has made the news or that “Murder, She Wrote” game advert I just saw.
Don’t listen to him. He’s just blowing off hot air, hoping that someone wll inhale it. Unless SEGA themselves have said anything, there’s no point in glorifying some perverted attention-seeker’s bullshit.
^ Honestly, I think Wentos makes a good point. Do I think he has inside information? I highly doubt it, to be honest. However, most of what he’s said is simple guess work. He’s probably just doing that–guessing based on the mostlikely situation. And the mostlikely situation with Mario and Sonic is that it ISN’T a sports game because everyone’s crying for a true Mario and Sonic title that isn’t simply a minigame fest.
I don’t see why they WOULDN’T change the genre this time. Two years after the previous game doesn’t mean anything; both Mario’s 25th Aniversary and Sonic’s 20th Aniversary are coming soon. What better fit than a crossover title to celebrate both?
I went there to find Wentos, but someone must have talked to him…so, he got scared and went to another city.
Oh, not that Wentos? My bad.
Could always be a SEGA employee under disguise. Or it could be nobody, making broad predictions like, “won’t necessarily be.” It’s easier to predict something when you’re not being specific.
Let’s also keep in mind…I don’t have the direct primary source documentation in front of me…so I’m not quoting, only paraphrasing. This would be a lot more concrete if the damn page were available, even in cached form.

So basically, you’re posting what amounts to a rumour of a rumour?
Great news site this…
I trust Wentos, in Unleashed there was a character named WENTOS and we had to trust and search for him, so I do to…
I did’nt remember him… till now though xD ahah
We want a Unleashed or Colors type game for Xbox360
*Chanting* RPG! RPG! RPG! RP*CLANG*
Yeah, I kind of thought the whole “Mario/Sonic crossover” thing would happen eventually too. I love the idea myself. I mean who wouldn’t love to see the first ever Mario and Sonic platformer? It has butt-loads of potential. Also, as UltimaHedgie previously stated both Mario’s 25th Anniversary and Sonic’s 20th Anniversary are coming soon so perhaps this is the “Sonic Anniversary title”? The game might have remakes of both Mario and Sonic’s classic levels in addition to a completely new story mode with new levels. This is all purely speculation on my part, but it’d be interesting to see nonetheless. My only question is how Mario and Sonic would be able to interact in each others levels. Sonic is too fast for Mario’s levels and Mario is too pudgy and slow for Sonic’s levels. hmmmm……..
Do -NOT- want Mario in my Sonic for his 20th.
I love how some of you are discrediting this just because it was on 4chan.
The sole fact optional characters aere not included is very simple to explain. They were optional => they were probably not polished + they could add small value to game => they were removed to focus on Sonic.
Mario and sonic dance dance revolution LOL
No platformer no care.
“Who’s wentos?”
C’mon, everybody knows Wentos! He’s that shady salesguy from Unleashed!
don’t worry the rumors are true for 2011-2012, their going to be three exclusives one on the wii, one for the 3ds and one for the ps3 while a port might come to 360 but probably not since its was totally failure since the last 2 hd games, i believe sony, sega and Nintendo are talking about their future since their are the originals consoles makers not Microsoft and they are from Japan to begin with so its make sense to cut the loses without Microsoft support while its cheaper to make games on the wii, Now on sony its full of mystery what they talk about their future but i only thing i heard that ps3 will overtake the 360 by end of this year by 14-19 million more sold and that is the fact while throughout 2011-2012 it will peak as the same way of the ps2 has peak on those years to come, and their going to be more games coming along to ps3 aaa titles so its no just the graphics make the best games but is how they used it makes the best games!
Do -NOT- want Mario in my Sonic for his 20th!!!
me too @Malady, me too!
no deal with PS3 only Microsoft please nad wii just for SEGA profits
@Ethan Kerr: I know that! Wait… you mean Wentos is real?! He leaked the next M & S game!? WENTOS IS REAL!? Oh my gosh…
This is most likely true! Last time it was… Please be an Awesome platformer! ^_^
@ Tristan and all who are wondering who Wentos is
Wentos is, admittedly, a mysterious salesman. However, he makes his presence as an acquaintance of AAUK in the Sonic Wrecks Website, occasionally showcasing unique post of some long-forgotten sonic “swag” (hence the “salesman”). That is all that I know
@Milo That Wentos and this one aren’t of any relation.
@ Kits’Okami
Sega said not to listen to this guy earlier… yet we are still listening to guy who in fact might be having a connection to a random Sega employee. He is probably just a regular 4chan creep.
I’ve got to say, in my opinion, Wentos’ ‘predictions’ have been pretty vague. It’s not exactly hard to guess where a video game company is going with their next product, especially when watching the evolution of it’s games as a whole.
Fans are seeing what they want to see, making the Wentos’ statements fit where they want, and glossing over the errors.
Sorry, just not convinced.
