“It is sure nice to see Sonic back in the fray”–Scans Included
Immediate kick-off to gameplay. About seventy percent of platforming in 2D. Good controls. No camera issues. Desire to collect extras. Minimum storytelling.
Is this really Sonic Colors–and 3D Sonic in of itself–as we truly imagined it?
Apparently so, if you read the whole of Nintendo Power’s review of the game, which affirms previous reports of a 9/10 rating for the Wii version, and a 7.5/10 for the DS. On the Wii side, the only real complaint was recycling of boss battles, while the DS was marked down for the quick nature of the portable edition–on par with a 3 or 4 hour experience, in their estimation.
The Wii review closes with this point of praise:
This is the game that Sega’s fleet footed mascot has deserved for years, and I would definitely love to see a second installment.
You have to see it to believe it–which is where the scans below come in. Courtesy of SegaMedia which posted them a few days, ago, you can see the direct scans from Nintendo Power, in good quality. The four pages of relevance are below.

“You have to see it to believe it”
No, not really.
I read the reviews in my dad’s copy of NPower yesterday. Honestly, I don’t think that the text of the review for the DS game contains enough negative things to justify the score…if shortness is the only complaint, why do Metroid games continue to thrive (with the obvious mixed-reviews exception of Other M)? IMO, people pay too much attention to length and not enough to quality of playtime. If it’s a great four hours instead of a merely good ten, isn’t that worth the cost?
As for the Wii review, it seriously has me wanting this game. I really wasn’t all THAT excited for it beforehand, but I’m very impressed with this review. Considering reserving in time to get that dorky-ass hat…
Ok now I really want this game now more than ever…..if only I had Eggman’s Time Travel Machine from Sonic 06………wait that would randomly send me to any point in time…..hmmmm IT’S WORTH IT STILL BECAUSE THE WAIT IS KILLING ME! I WANT SONIC COLORS!
He said coins instead of rings, i clearly see holes on those things =P
Sonic Colors > Sonic Adventure
Sonic 2 < Sonic 4 (sonic 2 is best but sonic 4 is good too)
Ops error
Sonic 2 > Sonic 4
Lucas, I’m really glad you fixed that error. I just about freaked out when I read your original post.
@Turbohog: hhaahahahah!! me too!
well…Sonic Colors -> two words -> SUPAH AWESOME!
@StuffGamer1 You act like 7.5 is a bad score, it’s not. A 7.0 is generally considered a good score by reviewers so there’s certainly nothing bad about a 7.5. Games scoring 8s and above have to take things to the next level and be more than just good. Colors Wii does take the game to the next level and goes above and well beyond what is necessary to make a good game.
Did Jun Senoue work on this soundtrack? So far I’ve only heard [what sounds like] the Unleashed team (pretty much everyone except Senoue and Richard Jacques)
Can reviewers not think of anything else to describe story telling and tone other than “Saturday morning cartoon”? That phrase is thrown around a lot with these kinds of games, I think I saw it pop up in every other review of Unleashed.
I take anything from Nintendo Power with a grain of salt, the barrier between review and preview has always been transparent with that mag but Colors looks a great game and I hope Sonic Teams gets the message that this what we want out of 3D Sonic.
Ahh, I knew it, so you DO get Chaos Emeralds from the simulator. Makes sense, given the icons. Too bad there aren’t any wacky and disorienting half-pipe special stages though. An improvement on the ones used in Heroes would be nice sometime.
At least glad that this is confirmed though…I was worried I’d be playing as Hyper Rainbow Sonic for the last boss, but seeing as this is a main series game and not a storybook one, it makes sense. Phew!
Still sad about the 7.5 on the DS version but at least they’re not really bashing it in the text…
…and are they seriously saying there’s no CGI opening? I’m not sure why a lot of reviewers treat it as a bad thing. First, if it’s skippable, it can’t be a negative, and there doesn’t even have to be any talking for it to be good looking. I thought the opening of Unleashed was a piece of really good animation and that barely had any dialog.
The only jiff I have against this is the boss battles and the no CGI opening… In unleashed, the Intro was smooth and gave a very interesting start to the game. As long as it’s skip-able, I think an opening would be well received if done well.
as the boss battles being “recycled-” Well, I don’t really think so. They seem to be original as far as what I can see, But that awaits to be seen.
Overall, I LOVE this game. I’m getting it no matter what.
@BD3: How good a seven is will differ depending on whom you ask. IMO, having nothing negative to say about a game other than that it’s short isn’t worth taking off 2.5 for…should’ve been a point higher based on the text of the review, at least. The real problem is that the Metacritic score will be affected by this, and we all know that the game industry and a lot of shoppers pay WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much attention to that without bothering to read the actual reviews.
After seeing so many gleefully positive reviews for Sonic 4, I’ve become a bit wary when people start saying things like “This is the game that Sega’s fleet footed mascot has deserved for years”.
Granted, this game looks fantastic and I’m under the impression that it probably will deserve a 9/10… but it’s kinda funny how skeptical Sonic 4 and its reviews have made me.
I don’t generally take NP very seriously to begin with though, since they seem to have rather casual (and generous) standards.
@Stuffgamer
A game gets credit for what it does RIGHT. You don’t start with a perfect 10 and then “knock off” points when it gets things wrong. You start with a 0 and add from there. A lack of positive remarks is just as much a judge of a game’s quality as how many negative points you can list.
Now SEGA is time to work in this title but in HD for the Xbox360
pleeeeeeeeease
One of the best things in sonics history.. BUT SA2 rulez the shit out of this ^^
I absolutely despise reviews that look, feel, and read like a company paid preview! This literally had to be one of the worst reads for a game with this much anticipation. Through all 4 of the pages, very little was actually said about gameplay. Why in the hell would NP think the story choice needs to be re-drilled in anyone’s head as if It’s hard to understand! Just gameplay folks: This is positive and this is negative, that’s it! Not that hard to understand, other mags have only been doing it FOR YEARS NOW!
@ChaticFox:
I would agree with u if NP wasn’t known for praising every game with a title screen. Unlike most people with a positive AND negative list, they focus in explaining what the game was “trying to do” and credits them from there. That’s not a review, that’s more like a sales pitch. If a game does something correct, then let it be stated, and if wrong, the same act should be done. What would be the whole point of a review article (def- an essay or article that gives a critical evaluation) if the writer’s thoughts were not clearly stated. Are we suppose to guess what they are thinking? Because if that’s the case, I could do that for free on my own time without purchasing their publication.
Chaos Emeralds!? Nice!
@kkxprs
That’s exactly why I don’t really take their reviews or scores too seriously.
That said, this “article” brings forth a lot of new information that is very good to hear indeed.
I bet that if we collect the chaos emeralds, we’ll go Super Sonic in normal levels.
*prays*
@ krazeeKidd102
Maybe a wisp that allows you to turn Super!?!?
lolmao! =P
Wait.
I think that be a bad thing . . ?
HAHAHA I love hearing all the XBox fanboys asking for this on XBox….
Same is happening with Goldeneye
(IGN = 9/10):P
First, you guys complain there aren’t enough good games for Wii, and now that good third party games are coming out Wii exclusive, you guys complain that they arent on 360. If you want a good Sonic game, get your butt up and buy a Wii and stop whinin! Otherwise, drop your 150 bucks fora Natal and get a ”good” Sonic game (Sonic Free Riders, 7.5/10)
That is the point of console exclusivity! TO SUPPORT THE SYSTEM, not ditch it like NBA Jam. You want Wii games? BUY A WII!
thanks, my rant is over now!
Also, one other note…
While agree NP tends to avoid negative words in the text, i still think their scores reflect their true feelings….
