Ahead of Domestic Sonic Colors Launch, More Mixed Reviews

G4, Gamespot Weigh In

If the words of Jim Sterling have you down…well, compared to a 4.5, you can cheer up.

With Sonic Colors launching in North America tomorrow, we have two more reviews to pass along.  The first is from Gamespot, which thus far has only published a review for the Wii version–with a 8 out of 10 score to boot.

UK writer Jane Douglas found the game’s co-op and repeated boss fights a weak point–as other have–but praised the game’s visuals, level design, and platforming:

A handful of flashy new abilities are tossed into the mix, but they don’t undermine the essential Sonic formula of bot bopping, ring grabbing, and high-speed platforming. It’s not without occasional niggles, but Sonic Colours exhilarates much more often than it frustrates, making it a commendable new entry in a sometimes shaky franchise.

On the other hand, we have G4, which awarded the game a 3 out of 5, the equivalent of a 6 on the 10 scale, in effect canceling out the above should both make it to Metacritic.  Again, reviewing the Wii version, writer Rob Manuel wasn’t as wowed by the game’s mix of 2D and 3D platforming:

Some of the levels really shine and demonstrate really the essence of what a Sonic game should be: a quick and fun journey with multiple areas to explore. These little gems, however, only pop up a couple of times per world. The rest of the time is met with bland construction or terribly short stages whose only purpose is to show off one of the new Wisp powers. While the controls work in the 2D sections, areas with that extra dimension (3D) suffer from the same static camera and Sonic becoming unstuck from the three running lanes the game sets up for him.  This title feels like the closest the team has come to completely removing the 3D elements all together but sometimes it’s hard to cut the apron strings.

Europeans have already made their decision on the game and will continue to do so throughout the Holidays. Those in North America get their first crack when the game is released tomorrow. Thanks to all the news tipsters–too many to note here–who sent these in.
