Who’s the Troll Now?
Apparently, this is now what happens when you trash Sonic games.
Destructoid’s Jim Sterling, who offered a 4.5 out of 10 review for the Wii edition of Sonic Colors last week, got a surprise from Sega of America today. You’re looking at it above.
It’s one of the gigantic promotional banners the company had to promote the game, and it looks like it’s one of the same banners used at the Bryant Park event. Sterling had to unravel the parcel–a couple dozen feet in height–outside his home, and according to his post on the prank today, he’s already planning payback:
For a sense of scale, I’m 6’2″, and yet if I laid down next to this image, I would only just about be tall enough to lick Sonic’s little furry balls. You ever been to a convention and seen those giant canvas banners hanging from the wall? Yeah … now I have one in my rain-soaked back garden.For the record, I have a very short list of suspects who would have orchestrated this, and as soon as I work out what the Hell I’m going to DO with this thing, I will start working out how to get you f*ckers back.
Still, at least Sega has a better sense of humor about reviews than most Sonic fans.
You can see more at the link cited above. We assume the winner of the banner during Sega’s Free Stuff Friday–which hasn’t yet been determined as of this article’s publication–will have a similar conundrum.
This in mind, you can look forward to our negative eight billion out of five star reviews for both editions of Sonic Colors shortly, starting with my take on the Wii edition early next week.

HAHAHAHA
SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEGGGGGGGGGGGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
HAHA! Brilliant! XD
“You see, this is a big issue in the realm of online journalism. Many people like [Jim] Sterling do not give you all the facts of a story, they don’t finish video games that they have been assigned to review, and essentially push their own agendas with what they write. Honestly, I don’t really understand as to how this came about, but I do know that it is a big issue, and I know that I’m not the only one who outright despises it. Though this style of writing has dominated online journalism for a long time, I honestly believe that this is a large wave of backlash that is about to crash against it.”

Hahaha! Serves them right for giving a good game a bad score for no deserving reason. They were probably too stupid and grudge holding to give the game a chance over the many disapointing reviews they gave previous Sonic games.
“This in mind, you can look forward to our negative eight billion out of five star reviews for both editions of Sonic Colors shortly, starting with my take on the Wii edition early next week.”
Admit it. You’re just jealous that the hater gets the poster and you don’t.
Kate, if I got something like that, I’d give it away in a contest. I certainly have no place to put that.
-T
Well now, what did SEGA do this time? Oh, its not a gimmick, just a prank? That is freaking funny.
Do gametrailers (Spike) next.
LOL
@Kate
Um… that was the joke? lol
On topic. I don’t get how this is supposed to be a prank. Sure, he may not be able to use it and/or he many not even want it, but it’s still a cool thing to receive. I’d keep and hold on to it just for the sheer novelty.
It honestly seems more along the lines of what has been said in previous articles about Sega attempting to win over their most vocal critics with gifts. Not that I really believe that that is the case either, but it seems a lot more likely than “lol, I’m trollin’ you by GIVING YOU STUFF”
That’s like TP-ing somebody’s house with strings of money. Sort of a self-defeating “prank” if you ask me.
A brillant prank, but I’m still unclear on something; Did Sega send that to him, because if they did I don’t understand how’s that a prank.
Tristan Oliver: Should we expect similar shenanigans from Sega in the future? Boy aren’t I full of questions today.
@Sonic R
What I don’t understand is how you can say “a brilliant prank” and “I don’t understand how that’s a prank” in the same sentence!
Men, destructoid’s review is totally nonsence, really, i played the game, is pretty solid.
This guys dont deserve be called “gamers” they cant pass even a single stage.
Sega – 1991 – 1998 – Good Days
Sega – 2010 – ???? – Back Good Days of easter egg marketing,And good 3D game and if feedback of sonic 4 go sucess and sega put classic physics, WELCOME BACK!
He deserved it.
It’s obvious that the reviewer was a “true retro” Sonic fan who hated every Sonic game past Genesis. It’s obvious, because he called Sonic 4 an improvement in his review. That game was terrible. It contained old recycled material and only had four levels, not to mention that it had the worst final boss fight ever. What a god-awful waste of fifteen dollars.
….
why waste such a good banner on a hater? D8
Even if I don’t know what I would do with it, hell it’s a collectible!
Um….how is this a prank? It seems more like a gift to me…
If that’s the case, then Sterling is just finding a poor excuse to get back at SEGA.
Lol! Oh gosh, Sega just owned this guy. Clever.
~Micheche
@Incindiu
Also, don’t forget his quote on his Sonic 4 Review:
“Oh, and the physics are fine, you whiny bastards!”
-Jim Sterling, Destructoid.
If Sega was intending this to be a prank, then you have to admit, it was pretty hilarious.
The guy gives a bad review for a game and says he doesn’t care for it, and then Sega goes and sends him this ENORMOUS, oversized poster of the same game. Pretty priceless if you ask me. XD
Yeah, I agree with the idea that this was just a way for them to try to win over one of their harsh critics, over the popular idea that this was a prank. I mean come on, the banner’s pretty awesome if you’re a Sonic fan. Plus with the plethora of gifts given out lately to the haters, I think it would be obvious what they are trying to accomplish here. That’s what I don’t get, why give cool collectibles to people who hate your game rather than give them to loyal fans who actually give a crap about the series. Although I have to say, it is funny that there’s no place to put it.
Oh, I know! He can use it as a blankie!
~kharma
LOL XD
SEGA RULES!!!
Do NOT mess with sega!
So basically what it boils down to is, “Bastards gave me merchandise, YOU’LL RUE THE DAY!”
I love SEGA again. They do what Nintendon’t, always.
“This in mind, you can look forward to our negative eight billion out of five star reviews for both editions of Sonic Colors shortly, starting with my take on the Wii edition early next week.”
Was that a poor attempt of a joke there, or just taking some hints from the writers of Family Guy?
At least the prank is a minor thing and not something over the line like breaking the guy’s windows. Kudos to whoever did this for making a civilised and original prank when so many Sonic fans would have just gone with “burn him!”
@Haru
That was a way of mocking Sega because apparently negative reviews = free stuff.
Omg!!! why is everyone saying “I don’t get the prank”. It’s simple…Jim Sterling doesn’t like Sonic Colors…Sega mails him a HUGE Sonic Colors banner that’s bigger than 3 Jim Sterlings…that’s it. It’s just like if I openly don’t like Sonic X (and I can’t stand that cartoon) and Sega mails me a HUGE Sonic X banner…I don’t want that crap on my lawn regardless if it’s free. Some people act slow these days.
Very funny. It serves him right for writing a negative review (I mean, why would anyone hate a game if it’s from a video game franchise that they all have known and loved for years? I would never do that).
I still wish this same thing happened to those hideous Sonic 2006 haters. Oh well.
@Vulpine
It’s…a…”slightly” different situation…this game is actually fun and mostly everyone loves it…almost everyone hated 06′ (me included).
@Jmack. I actually liked sonic 06. It was alot like sonic adventure.
@Koolsk9ter:
Lies and slander.
@Haru. Huh?
@Haru. Actually I wasn’t lying, that’s how i feel about the game, I actually enjoyed it. I got addicted to it last year playing on ps3.
@Koolsk8r
Except that he LOVED the DS version. Just sayin’
Saying 06 is a lot like Adventure is fair. In the same way as saying “this batch of brownies is a lot like that other one, except this one was made with bits of shit in it”
But for once I can actually agree with Vulpine!
I’d love to get a gigantic poster just for hating Sonic 06. Where do I sign up?
Dear Sega,
I hate every Sonic game ever, I’m ashamed to have have bought and played them all. By the way, my mailing address is……
Blahaha, this article and the comment section is full of win. At least they have a good humor about it–didn’t they also send him a drawing of him as a troll on the DS version?
Also, Tristan, you totally got me with the deadpan humor: I spent a good ten seconds being nervous about the “negative eight billion” comment before realizing the joke. I fail. Hopefully you actually rate it over nine thousand.
In other news, I can make my own opinion because my sister just came home and presented me with Colors Wii. Late November is a very good time to have a birthday as a Sonic fan but this is actually the first time I’ve gotten a new one. I am so psyched at the moment but my stubborn will is telling me to first finish my Antenna Theory homework first. Arrgh
GOOOOOOOOOOOOO SEGAAAAAAAAAAAAAA sonic colors is sooooo fun i couldnt stop laughing at this
…This is a “prank,” you say? Nobody told the guy to unravel the tarp across his lawn, or even open the box in the first place. All he had to do was throw it away as soon as he got it.
Now, if someone from Sega personally visited the guy’s house, draped that tarp across his roof, and spray-painted “I wuv Sonik Culerz” on his car, THAT would be a prank.
@ChaoticFox I know, I hate the way the fanbase is because, it seems like sonic can’t be inovative according to the fanbase “for example” if sonic had a water jetpack like mario, they will all go crazy about it, and say crap like this game is doomed to fail and make like stupid rants and crap. All they want is sonic to run fast and thats it, but I want more from him, I want sonic to more cool stuff like sonic heroes. Sonic heroes was inovative because it had three character abilites all in one (switching characters) And that made the game awesome, well atleast for me. But no sonic is not allowed to do that according to the fanbase, he can only run from start to finish just like sonic unleashed. At least sonic colors was better than unleashed with platforming gameplay close to sonic adventure and sonic heroes. But you see what I’m saying. I miss it where games were actually inovative and made sense, rather than just a bunch of idiots b*tching over stupid crap. I feel like sonic is not being ruined by sega, but the fanbase. I’m glad that sega made sonic colors nice. I didn’t really like sonic 4 that much because the classic thing didn’t make sense to me since the fans already have there genesis games. Sonic colors feels very modern which I like, I think that sega is going in the right direction, but I hope they improve and make the first levels more challenging in the next sonic game. also hope sega doesn’t listen to the dumb fans that are annoying. I feel they are killing the sonic franchise with their stupid annoying b*tching. I hope everyone understands what i’m saying. i’m not trying to offend anyone, just giving out my opinion.
That guy made bad mistake after blaming Good 3D Sonic.
Who would waste such a good poster on such a giant asshole like Jim Sterling?
If anything, send him a box of dog shit with a note that says: “This is what everyone thinks of you and your review of Sonic Colors, and we agree. Enjoy!”
@koolsk8ter111
That’s exactly the case. The fandom is the one ruining Sonic, not SEGA. They have worked hard on making the new Sonic games ‘great’ and true to the classics, yet the fans do nothing but complain about it? Don’t know what their problems are, but they need to get over the changes and improvements to the franchise.
SEGA made a great new game (Sonic 4) that’s a direct sequel to the classics, yet people still act like butts like they were before because said direct sequel didn’t go the way they wanted and they complained on how “Sonic has green eyes and looks like the same he did in Sonic 2006!” or whatever tantrums they say. Come on, people. Sonic’s design looks fine, and why don’t you accept Sonic 4 the way it is? SEGA worked hard on it. You should be happy that they made the game that you all wanted for ages, not complaining about it. Geez.
I am also sick of the fandom moaning all the time and I wish they would be open-minded when it comes to SEGA making a decision on whether or not the next Sonic game has the same or different gameplay as before. I may enjoyed the old classics but I also like the more recent Sonic games, too. People need to start taking off their nostalgia goggles and realize that the recent games are not atrocities like they (and the reviewers) claim them to be. Or else, they will end up getting promotional banners of Sonic 2006 courtesy of SEGA. Mwahaha.
That is freakin hilarious! I think I love the response even more! XD
But as to what to do with the giant banner… he could sell it to me. X3
@Vulpine. Your right. Mario has new games why can’t sonic? Mario has a kart game, why can’t sonic? Mario has a tennis game why can’t sonic? You see what im saying? People complain about stupid stuff, sonic can’t stay 2D side scrolling forever. THIS IS 2010!!!
@Vulpine: I couldn’t agree more. Sonic’s worst enemies are his loudmouthed fans that do nothing but blow hot air in everyone’s faces.
Not only that, but they mix their metaphors, too. Unforgivable.
@Koolsk8ter111
Exactly. This is a brand new decade and things have changed a lot through time. Sure, the old stuff may still exist, but that does not mean you can bash the new stuff just because it’s “different”.
I heard that Sonic Colors was made for the Super Mario Galaxy crowd, but that is just an opinion at this point. Either way, both are good games.
@Kate Vunza
It’s nice to see someone who agrees. I hope that SEGA doesn’t listen to the worst of all fans and actually makes something of their own creativity (I still pray that they don’t listen to any Kingdom Hearts fan that wants a Kingdom Hearts/Sonic crossover or else we are all doomed). Getting feedback from loyal fans is nice, but not if said fans act hideous about it.
Definately one of the most “epic” harmless pranks I’ve seen on the internet for awhile. It’s about time somebody pulled this on one of these biased game critics. I don’t think people who hate the Sonic series should review Sonic games honestly. It’s like having somebody who hates FPS games review Halo or something.
He shouldn’t be to upset by it, no damage was done, and I’m sure he could make ALOT of money selling that huge thing on the internet.
(You’d be surprised how much gamer geeks spend on rare things like that.)
I must admit, I always hated that Destructoid website. They’re very biased against Sonic, (and some other things) and even admitted it. So I never take what they say about the blue blur seriously personally. It’s just another hedgehog-hate haven on the internet. Some critics are just as bratty & blinded by nostalgia-goggles as some old-school Sonic fan purists are.
Lord knows I don’t love every Sonic game either, new or old, (why is “Secret Rings” rated higher then “Heroes” again?) but I still enjoy the series for what it is.
