Clear Majority Say Give it a Chance
Despite a current Metacritic rank of 49 out of 100 for Sonic Free Riders, pared with earlier company remarks that said averages will be a factor in delisting Sonic titles, a clear majority of participants in the latest TSSZ News @Issue poll think SFR deserves some leniency.
We asked if the game, in light of the poor rank, should be pulled from store shelves. Out of 912 participants, 57 percent responded “no.” About a third of respondents, 32 percent, responded “yes,” while eleven percent were unsure.
The smart thinking is that Sega will give SFR a chance at least through the Holidays to sell units and let the parent hardware try to etch out a userbase, as a pull out so soon after release–and as a Kinect launch title–would be embarrassing.
A new poll is now available to vote on. You can discuss the results of this poll in our comments section below.

I’m surprised so many people said no. If it’s a shitty game, keep it off the shelves. A great franchise shouldn’t be tainted with crap.
In the end, who cares….. If it goes of shelves, no one would buy it. If they keep it, it’ll still suck.
I’d quite like Sega to continue making enough money to keep making games, so keep it in, please. ‘Sides, some people probably wanna buy it, let them. *shrug*
The need to make an update with Xbox 360 Controller compitability so they can stand a chance ATLEAST
Wii Balance board support please.
I think the key difference between de-listing Sonic 2006 and Sonic Free Riders is that Free Riders hasn’t been out for four years yet let alone four months. If you’re goin to go through the trouble of making a game you might as well sell it for a little while. There might be someone who wants to buy the game (Not everybody cares about Metacritic or review scores in general) and pulling it now would just be mean. I’d say wait a year.
I can’t really say that the game itself was the reason for such low scores; its CLEARLY the Kinect’s fault… Ok, so I don’t have the damned thing, but I don’t need to. If this game gets controller compitability (which it won’t), decent reviews will come flying in. But damn, a 49? That’s dangerously close to Sonic ’06 (47).
I’d like to see ALL Kinect games removed from store shelves.
I don´t think any working title should be pulled from the stores. In fact, I would say that only games like Sonic 06 or Sonic GBA (completely broken games in many aspects) should be pulled and forgotten. Any other game, as crappy as it can be, should be able to be bought. In fact, I don´t like the Sega move of removing Sonic games with bad reputation. If you are embarrased, improve the next ones and don´t try to hide what you did poorly. New good Sonic games will improve Sonic reputation, removing bad Sonic games will only annoy those who want the already launched games.
I haven’t played the game yet (I still don’t have Kinect), but not every reviewer nor critic tells the truth on a game. I’m sick of people bashing the recent Sonic games (Let’s be positive, shall we?), and this is one of the reasons why I defend Sonic 2006 so much.
Sure, not every Sonic game is a success, but that does not mean you can say bad things about the more ‘underrated’ games in the series.
By that logic(Taking down Sonic Free Riders over quality issues), SEGA should also take down Sonic 4 Episode 1 across the PS3 and 360 since they are rated as if they are average.
I played it, found it a bit annoying, but nothing too drastic.
I was able to play just fine , and the controls were as responsive.
I always believe is the player input and not the game.
Even my sisters and friends can play it just fine (after a 15minute learning)
I buying Kinect and Sonic Free Riders in 2 weeks, if not, I’ll buy instead wii and Sonic Colors…
LOL – SU just made me realize that it’d cost about the same to buy a Wii and Colors for the price of a Kinect and Riders.
You can have the original motion control console, complete with a back catalog of truly stellar games (not to mention the current bundles featuring NSMBW) alongside one of the best Sonic games in recent history… or you can have an expensive and gimmicky camera toy coupled with a poorly executed Sonic racing game spinoff.
Hrm… I simply can’t fathom what the smarter gamer decision would be…
@KMetalMind
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Besides that, there are people, like me, who would go out and buy a game they know is crappy just because they need to try it for themselves or are just that diehard of fans. Even though I fit pretty snugly into both those categories, I won’t be getting Free Riders, I’m not buying a $150 dollar peripheral.
@ChaoticFox
lol
@Vulpine
I dont think bashing Sonic 06 has anything to do with unneccesary pessimism. The game sucked to most of us, and robbed us of $60 that could have gone to a multitude of better games. We shouldnt settle for mediocrity in an age with such a variety of quality titles. Besides, if we all talked positively about games like Sonic 06/ Shadow, etc, what kind of message would that send Sonic Team?
Bashing, while sometimes tedious and repetetive (certainly within this fanbase lol) is importent for the industry.
On topic though, i say reduce the price for a little bit, then get rid of it. If it cant do well at launch, it wont fare well when Kinect actually starts getting some decent games.
Only the reviewers have really had trouble with the controls. Most other people got the hang of it after not so long.
Make it for Wii and we’ll talk about sales.
