Next Release Planned for Early February
It appears the Sonic Fan Remix team got some Chemical Plant in Donkey Kong Country’s factory stages.
A couple new screens were released today by Pelikan13 at Sonic Retro’s forum. The project lead admitted he’s stepped aside from the project a bit, as most involved with fan games do, but production now continues:
Yes, still being worked on, however I did take a rather long break from it but I’m getting my enthusiasm back.
To prove that point, Pelikan13 provided a couple rough, work-in-progress screenshots, which we have in our gallery below. On first glance a Chemical Plant Zone environment is seen; it would be the next logical step after the modernization of Emerald Hill in the first demo, and indeed it is what the shots are labeled. But the also exist elements more appropriate of Scrap Brain or an original stage, both fair game for this fan game. Take a look below, and offer your thoughts in the comments section. Pelikan13 estimated a February timetable for the next release; we’ll be sure to bring you up to date in the build-up to then.

Looks very nice ~ can’t wait.
Pretty snazzy.
This looks amazing. Simply, purely, amazing!!!!!
This kind of reminds me of Gene Gadget Zone from Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn/PC version) and in a good way, too!
Can’t wait to see the whole level! ^^
If I was Iizuka, I’d be embarrased XD.
It’s very beautiful but I just don’t really like Sonic’s model.
Oh well. It doesn’t matter. It’s all opinion and taste.
Wonder how it plays?
Oh Jesus God in Heaven, this is glorious.
As much as I loved the visuals and brilliant background imagery from Emerald Hill, I have to agree that the graphics seemed a bit TOO detailed in certain areas…
This, on the other hand… this is just perfect. This is how you do a classic throwback without making it feel generic and rehashed. This is beautiful. This is BEYOND Sonic 4 “as I imagined it”. This is a wet dream come true.
I stand behind everyone else that has ever said that Sonic Team should be ashamed.
@ChaoticFox
“wet dream come true”? What the hell man you nasty! Nobody wants to hear you say that.
I know people WANT Sonic Team to be ashamed and embarrassed because of this game, but Dimps is the one who made Sonic 4 not Sonic Team. Sonic Team was working on Colors instead.
Also to add, stop saying the people who made Sonic 4 should be embarrassed, because they already said in an interview that they don’t care what the reaction to SFR is, because they already know that their fanbase is the scum of the gaming community.
I miss the original background, I hope it´s there on the final release for February.
Wow
Sonic 4 was a cooperation between ST AND Dimps. Furthermore, ST was the team IN CHARGE, even if Dimps did most of the programming. Therefore, they set the bar on what levels of quality were acceptable, and they are still ultimately responsible in many ways.
Either way, if you want to be finicky, I will re-state: “Whoever was responsible for the look and feel of Sonic 4 should be ashamed if that was the best they and their entire production team could come up with, because it pales in comparison to what Pelikan and Mercury have accomplished IN THEIR SPARE TIME”.
Personally, if they don’t care what their fans think of their product, I would say that that makes THEM the scum of the gaming community. When a producer starts thinking they’re better than or above their target consumer (while simultaneously trying to sell us their products while proclaiming that they have been created with us in mind), then they’ve got a colossal ego problem DESERVE to be knocked down a few pegs.
@Kmetal. I have a feeling there’s a lot more to those backgrounds than those giant metal fans. I’ll bet that as you progress through the level there’ll be a lot more to it. I can’t wait to see how they handle the purple chemical water sections.
@ChaoticFox
whoa whoa whoa, I never said they thought they were better or didn’t care about their target audience. All I said was they know how hard their fanbase is to please, that’s why 2 Sonic games were being made to please both kinds of fans (stubborn fans that is).
Plus attacking a company for thinking for themselves isn’t right, if they worked hard on a game and nobody liked it what would you think they’d do? They have feelings ya know and the more they’re criticized the worse their performance is. They do care about what people think about their stuff, why do you think they’re trying so hard?
They don’t like it when people don’t like them, and they don’t like the people that don’t like them… it’s called being human.
@Raggtime
Nobody is attacking them for thinking for themselves. In regards to SFR, I’m not even attacking them period. I’m saying that I believe SFR looks 10x better than Sonic 4, and if I had been responsible for that game’s graphical design, I would be ashamed after having seen what these two geniuses have put out.
I’m not saying Sonic 4 is graphical garbage, I’m just saying that the fact that two dudes without huge production studios can effortlessly rival the product of Sonic Team and Dimps collaborative resources is a little bit sad. ST/Dimps SHOULD be capable of so so so much more than two guys in their basements (figure of speech).
@RaggtimeSonic
Oh no their poor feelings! I had no idea Sonic Team was comprised of children!
Iizuka’s “can’t please the fans” line is BS and I wish people would stop towing it, Sonic Fan Remix and that Mushroom Hill CG were widely praised by fans and the gaming community at large.
@Dr.Eggfang
The only thing BS is your comment, the fans are unpleasable just look at the facts. When Sonic Team makes something it get ripped on even Sonic Colors has all this hate on it, yet when the fans make something people praise it like it’s the next game of the year. Iizuka’s “can’t please the fans” line is true because the fans don’t like SEGA, they like what’s not made by them.
See I proved you wrong, just look at you coming in here like you know everything. It’s people like you who just can’t think (at all… I mean) about what’s really going on with Sonic, people like you who always thinks you and all other fans are right. People like you who are just ruining Sonic for yourself.
Honestly, you’ve both got a point. Sega may never be able to please every single fan, but it’s also true that they simply aren’t as in tune with what we, as a fanbase, want.
“You can’t please everyone” is both a true statement AND a cop out excuse not to listen to us. Because even if you can’t, that’s no excuse not to TRY, and they can certainly do much better than they have been.
You know what? I wasn’t very impressed with the first Fan remix. I don’t look forward to this at all. . don’t get me wrong. The graphics are stunning, but they don’t really fit. It’s over-the-top, like they were TRYING to get people against Sega by showing off what they can do. Honestly, I played the demo thinking it’d be really cool. But after the first level, I wanted to turn it off. It’s really colorful and pretty, but everything is so distracting. And I noticed that Sonic’s model is just a modern sonic model with black eyes and a larger belly. That’s litterally it. It just doesn’t feel like a Sonic game to me. It feels like a homebrew mock-up of Sonic 2, using unfitting music and visuals. Sorry.
I disagree entirely with Brandon. This remake is looking awesome. Its not that anyone’s against SEGA so far as I’m concerned. If anything we all owe it to SEGA for starting all of this.
No need to critique the work of another individual without the intention of giving ideas for improvement.
I think Pelikan13 is doing a brilliant job, and as much as I would prefer to see some original level designs come into play, I’ll be happy to play anything he sends his way if it can live up to the promise of the first demo he released.
Great work on SFR! we’re all looking forward to the next demo
This bears such a scary resemblance to the Generations version.
