Game of the Year Nominations Included, Your Vote Decides
For the first time we’ve seen in a while, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I is getting some positive recognition via a round of nominations in the 2010 Nintendo Power Awards, including Game of the Year.
The downloadable title joins Sonic Colors, both nominated for Overall Game of the Year along with GOTY on respective platforms WiiWare and Wii. Sonic 4 nabbed two other nominations including Best Retro Revival and Best Platformer. Both editions of Colors are additionally nominated for best graphics on their respective platforms, while the Wii edition got two nods for Best Platformer and Best Original Score.
Here’s the difference between this and a lot of the other best of awards: This one is solely decided by you. With ten chances for Sonic to win, there’s no excuse not to vote at this link. Wouldn’t it be nice for Colors to get the win in a very competitive GOTY category filled with the likes of Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Scribblenauts, and Donkey Kong Country Returns? Your vote counts, so do it early and often. Thanks to Blue Emerald for sending this in. I just don’t want SMG2 to win. I want Sonic Colors or DKCR to win
COLORS! COLORS! COLORS! COLORS!
Sonic Colors FTW again!
If Sonic 4 wins anything I will fucking shank a bitch.
Sonic Colors should win, and in Second place Sonic 4
, I’m going to get in 3days a wii and COLORS muahahha
All I want is that SONIC wins, no matter what game
Sonic Colors and Sonic 4 ain’t going to win shit, it’s the sad truth that no one likes Sonic anymore even though a good game is staring them in the face. I hope at least Colors wins at least one thing but it’s in all the same categories as SMG2 so I’m not getting my hopes up.
It’s always good to be nominated though.
I’m sorry but, even though both Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors were great, there’s just no way they can top Mario Galaxy 2. Donkey Kong, maybe, but not Galaxy 2.
Meh, not to be asshole, but there’s no way I’d call Colors better than Galaxy 2. Had they adjusted the 3D controls in Colors more, though, than there’d be some higher competetion. But for graphics and original score? Fuck yeah.
I really like sonic colors, but is too hard to win, i mean, dkcr andmario galaxy 2 are really big sized games.
@soranamine forever:
I didn’t have chance to play Colors for longer time yet. That said, I got used to controlls in 5 minutes, compared to SMG(1) week. That’s right, week. I’m a kbrd-mainly guy if we’re talking about controls, but it took me a f@#$%^& week.
Sorry, DKCR is the best game this year.
Actually, it’s the best platformer I’ve played since Sonic 3&K.
That said, Colors gets my vote for best original score.
Sonic Colors should at least win ONE award. If Sonic 4 wins anything, someone is getting a broken window for Christmas. LOL JK
Colors should win at least Best Original Score. Haven’t played DKCR or SMG2 yet, so they influenced how I voted.
Only categories I voted for: best Wii graphics (Super Mario Galaxy 2), best action game (Sin & Punishment: Star Successor), best platformer (Super Mario Galaxy 2), and best retro revival (Donkey Kong Country Returns). I’ve barely played DCKR and haven’t played Epic Mickey yet so I don’t feel a can vote for a lot of those categories. However, I gave DKCR my vote for best retro revival because I absolutely don’t want Sonic 4 to win that award. As for my two votes for SMG2, it’s an awesome game that deserves the award more than Sonic Colors. Sonic Colors is a great game but SMG2 is an excellent game. Also, Nintendo Power are fuckers for not nominating Sin & Punishment: Star Success for both best Wii game and Game of the Year so I didn’t even vote in those categories. That game was amazing.
@W.A.C.
This is a Sonic news feed dude, don’t go Mario praising. It’s a good game and all but it’s Sonic here
@soranamineforever: I can agree with that. I have Super Mario Galaxy 2 and while I don’t if its better then the first one, I think its better then Sonic Colors. Sonic Colors does have a lot of potential but I don;t know how they’ll incorporate that in future Sonic Games. Does it mean now they’ll have a power-ups or does it mean that the style and physics will be used in future Sonic games?
Oh well, Here’s hoping that Sonic wins something in March.
sonic 4 should win worst sequel in 2010
@RaggtimeSonic: I only made my comment because a lot of people here seemed so negative about the idea of SMG2 winning. It’s a wonderful game and miles beyond any Sonic game that has released in the past 16 years. Considering how S3&K is my favorite game ever, that says a lot. Sure, Sonic Colors is a great game but the idea of it winning Game of the Year is ridiculous. Oh, and the lack of Nintendo Power’s respect to the masterpiece that is Sin & Punishment: Star Successor is another reason I made that comment. >_>
SMG2 looks like the game where it takes the villian role of the GOTY while Sonic Colors takes on the Underdog role.
@WAC
SMG2 may be better than Colors, and it may indeed be a great game by itself… but GotY? That’s just not right. It’d be a sad day in the industry for a game like that to be considered the best game of the year.
SMG2 doesn’t deserve to be GotY 2010 because it relies so heavily on programming and ideas introduced in 2007. it hardly deserves credit as a fully unique and original game. It’s more like an expansion than anything.
To me, that would be like making World of Warcraft Cataclysm the GotY, or a DLC pack featuring some new levels and content.
@RaggtimeSonic
“It’s always good to be nominated though.”
That’s loser talk.
@ChaoticFox: You act like anything that’s a sequel which doesn’t completely overhaul itself should never get GotY. While yes, there weren’t a lot of changes to the engine, that’s because the engine was already awesome. Besides, I didn’t even vote for that category because my favorite Wii game Sin & Punishment: Star successor wasn’t nominated.
@WAC
There’s a rather broad grey area there, but I think a game should establish itself as its own unique experience if it is to be granted a title as noteworthy as “game of the year”. I have nothing against sequels or expansions or sticking with a strong formula, but I think that originality should be rewarded over a refinement of something we already know is great.
That would be re-releasing a movie with extended footage and letting it win Best Picture at the Oscars two years in a row.
^ Very well said, good sir!
I think GotY should always go to the best game released. While it’s definitely not my favorite Wii game from this year, it’s certainly the best game of those nominees. Oh well. Different opinions I guess. It just sorta bugged me so many people here practically despised the idea of SMG2 winning it when it’s such a wonderful game.
I hear ya. I don’t have anything against the quality of the game, I just have a different interpretation of (or additional criteria regarding) the word “best” when it comes to awards and recognition, I guess.
