Still A Highly Anticipated 3D SFG
Last week, the team behind ongoing UDK based project Ashura: Dark Reign released another batch of screenshots from the ongoing effort.
These shots hold a bit of a variety from before, showing off two new areas: Green Grove and Labyrinth Zone. The former continues the lush environments seen previously, while it gets a little dark and claustrophobic in the Labyinth
Check out the shots in the gallery below. The A:DR team appear to be updating on their progress at least bimonthly. We’ll keep you informed on what’s up their sleeve next.

I don’t really trust Mods, specially when it’s about Unreal Tournament.
but let’s see how this gets.
as bloody impressive as that looks…
I really hope Sega starts returning Itemboxes and the Spindash in the future Sonic games!
Really miss the spindash, sheilds, invincibilitys, and more…
@Blur
Item boxes are never coming back
They’ve replaced them with those stupid little bubble packs. Sonic 4 was the first game to feature them since S3K, and I bet somebody had to twist an arm to make that happen.
I miss the Spin Dash too. Sonic sorely needs an excuse to roll again… but not like those shitty ass flame kick boots from SA2 -shudder-
^What was wrong with the flame bracelet roll, I liked it, Did you just no like the fire or something?
They should do item boxes like Brawl does crates and RPGs do chests, different in different level themes. In organic levels, they could have the weirdo bubble thingys, in techno/city levels the monitors, and in sky levels balloons.
@ChaoticFox
I don’t think it really matters what’s holding the items as long as you get them. The Spin Dash isn’t really needed because of the homing attack and boost abilities but it would be nice to use it again.
That is not the first Labyrinth Zone screenshot they’ve released, by the way.
@Skai
How about the fact that it was completely unnecessary (regular spin dash can’t break wooden boxes??) or throws you into a complete stop and kills your momentum like an emergency brake? It serves NO PURPOSE!
@Raggtime
Item boxes aren’t necessarily important, but they are a beloved trope. To me they are as iconic as the ? blocks in Mario, and part of classic Sonic’s charm. If Mario started picking up mushrooms out of the grass a la the Legend of Zelda, it would be just as disappointing.
As for the spin dash, it may not be necessary, but that’s kind of the problem The newer games aren’t designed for the spin dash, and that’s precisely what saddens me, no matter how much I enjoy those games. I’d love to see a modern game that implements (and utilizes) both rolling AND the spin dash, rather than just pure running. It’s one of Sonic’s signature abilities, and it’s rather disappointing to see him robbed of it simply because Sonic Team hasn’t figured out a way to properly implement it.

I can agree on both things the item boxes are very iconic and the 3D games could really use Sonic’s spin dash like in the Sonic Adventures

To be honest, even the Adventure games failed to fully utilize the spin dash.
Sure, you could do it, but it was no different than the boost button. Just a burst in speed and invincibility. You didn’t even have to stop running in order to rev up and use it. There were no true rolling physics, or even a real purpose for the ability. Not only that, but you couldn’t actually curl into a ball at any point EXCEPT as part of the dash.
I’d like to see a modern Sonic game that actually incorporates Sonic’s rolling abilities. I wouldn’t even mind if they abolished the boost altogether in favor of a true spin dash and rolling mechanics. I’m not saying I need Genesis style pinball physics again, but I do feel as though Sonic has been robbed of one of his most defining abilities.
