The One to Watch Through 2011
It’s already crossed to 2011 in Japan, where Sega has opened a tease site touting Sonic’s 20th anniversary.
Right now, there’s little to speak of there, aside from the logo you see above, and a box art montage of the games released over the past two decades. Even website miners have found little clues thus far as to what’s in store. But the website Andriasang reports Sega’s Japanese division sent out a press release promising several “projects” on the way to commemorate the anniversary. What those are exactly wasn’t disclosed in the release.
Sega’s Alan Pritchard claimed some announcements are coming in the first quarter, so it shouldn’t be too long before we know what’s up. The JP website will be a first line of reference for many fans, as we hope this site is for you, too. 2011 looks to be a good one.

WOW, this is so awesome
Interesting…
And now we play the waiting game.
Nice logo, though I loved the 15th anniversary one with Sonic’s silhouette integrated into it
I am hopeful for an SA1 and SA2 remake. Not a port but an actual remake. Fixed glitches and physics, more chao features, and online support beyond leaderboards. Maybe for the 3ds since I know already I will be buying it. It is a long shot but I can dream…
@Cgc105 – Yeah, it’d be cool if they at least did a remake of Sonic Adventure, but chances are they will just port them. If anything, I kind of see them porting SA to the 3DS much like how Nintendo ported Super Mario 64 to the DS, but yeah in the end even that is a long shot…
I’ll keep an eye on that. Then again, we don’t know what this ‘Sonic 20th Anniversary’ game would be until SEGA announces it.
Looks nice……as long as we don’t have another Sonic 06/Sonic Genesis disaster…
Here’s hoping to Sonic 4: Episode II and any other Sonic game coming next year……
NO 2006 REPEAT…
2011!!!
@DalekSaxon
It may not be the best Sonic game but it doesn’t deserve hate. Just because it didn’t sell as well as say, Sonic Colors or any of the Genesis classics, does not mean it deserves to be hated. I’ll do what it takes to defend Sonic 2006 against all the snots who hate it.
But I liked Sonic 2006
The suspense is killing me
*Shoots self*
@Vulpine OMG! I thought i was the only one who actually liked sonic 06!
Come on SA3….
@EEE
SA3 would be amazing. A SA3 would also be a perfect time to remake the first 2. (hint, hint SEGA)
The Mario anniversary logo is better, but Sonic should be able to beat Mario’s anniversary game pretty easily.
@Cero
Poor guy, I shall buy an extra copy in your memory.
Hmmm…. If we’re lucky, this won’t be Sonic Adventure 3. BUT…
It’s going to be Sonic Adventure 3. Seriously guys, the Adventure games weren’t the pinnacle of greatness for the series. Every time I go play the original, I keep realizing how aged it’s gotten and when I play its sequel…. Well, I stop playing after 5 minutes into putting the disc in.
If we’re lucky Sega has been taking notes from Nintendo on how to make a 3D platformer. I HONESTLY DOUBT IT. But it would be nice to see an excellent Sonic instead of a mediocre/decent Sonic.
@SenatorSilver
It’s nice to see someone who likes Sonic 2006 does not hate the game for a change. If people don’t like it, then they should just ignore it instead of throwing a snit and writing negative garbage about it.
@Greg The Cat
Sonic Adventure 3 is what Sonic 2006 should have been called, rather then just plain “Sonic the Hedgehog”. If they do make a Sonic Adventure 3, then I hope it’s an improved port of Sonic 2006 with all the bugs, glitches and screen times removed so that people will no longer complain about it.
@Greg
I know what you mean. I bought SA1 on the PSN while it was at a low price, and boy was it a chore to play through. I didn’t know what was worse: The shard hunting and fishing levels, the outdated graphics and the poorly animated (but thankfully skippable) cutscenes, or just the god-awful camera and the quality of the port itself (I fazed through a wall in one of the hub worlds and died, I’m not joking).
I honestly WANT to like this game (because it’s STILL much better than some other Sonic games I’ve played)…but I can’t, even when I try. It has aged that badly.
Well, SA2 looks good, or at least the Sonic levels.
And we’ve always got Sonic Colors, so hip-hip-hooray.
I’m betting the 20th anniversary game will just be a collection. I wouldn’t mind if they gave Sonic a bit of a break this year, maybe just Episode 2 and the twentieth anniversary thing, and to have SEGA just work easy on the next BIG one.
@tailsthehedgehog
Yeah, as much as I like the Sonic franchise, it needs a break once in a while. SEGA has created plenty of other video game franchises which don’t get as much attention as Sonic for some reason, and it would be nice if some would make a comeback in the future.
We can only hope on what this 20th anniversary game would be.
Vulpine: If you don’t like Sonic 2006, I will act like an asshole to you just to make myself right.
Yeah, what a grand example of the community there. We don’t hate the game just to hate the game, it was poorly programmed, not even completed, and does
Now Loading…….
ring any bells?
Sonic Team! awesome.
Sonic awesome
I’m hyped as hell for 2011, and I really hate to be a downer, but guys, seriously, I want a SA3 as much as the next guy, but an SA3 won’t revive the franchise. You want to know why? Because this fanbase is broken beyond repair and even if the game is better than both of the Adventure games combined, fanboys will still find something to bitch about (GREEN EYES WTF!?).
And Vulpine, Sonic 2006 DOES deserve hate. Yes, the game is playable, but the problem is it plays like total ass. Sonic’s mach speed sections are terrible, Shadow’s vehicles are even worse than they were in his game, Silver moves too damn slow and he has no aiming reticule for throwing projectiles with his ESP. Not to mention the game has glitches galore that Sega couldn’t be bothered to delay the game to deprogram. If you like the game, then you like what you like, but don’t dismiss that the game has problems.
@Haru and Amuro
Oh, no, it does not deserve hate. Everyone is entitled to their own personal opinion, whether you like it or not. And what you say is only your own opinions and nothing more. Not everyone hates Sonic 2006. You may not like it yourselves, but there are still people out there (including me) that like it.
On the other hand, it’s good to know that you accept the fact that I liked the game. It may not be Sonic Colors or any of the classics, but no matter what you think, I enjoyed playing it.
Whatever it is, I hope we get to play it at SoS11!
@Vulpine
Because yes, there’s nothing to hate about bestiality.
I haven’t played Sonic ’06 though, so I can’t comment about the game play.
It doesn’t look as bad as people make it out to be though, I’ll give it that.
I don’t hate the game, but you have to admit it has a lot of flaws.
That doesn’t mean it’s a bad game, but that’s the general opinion.
Well, we know that Sonic 3DS is coming. And there were also hints of a new Mario and Sonic, one that doesn’t involve sports (a platformer, probably). As for my speculation, I wouldn’t be surprised if a Sonic Heroes 2 is coming. If you think about it, it really makes sense. I mean, the first game was very sucessful, I think I remember Iizuka stating in an interview that he’d like to make another game similar to Heroes, and why else would there be action figures of the Chaotix? They haven’t had major roles in a game since Sonic Heroes, and it’s unusual for Sega to approve merchandise of “old” characters unless they’re planninig a revival. I believe that a true “Sonic Renaissance” started in 2010, and It’ll continue throughout this yhear and into the future.
@Novus
Overall worth may be up for debate, but its flaws are not opinion. Its flaws are fact. Even Sega knows and admits to this.
lol Sonic Team.
SONIC SONIC SONIC SONIC SONIC
@SonikkuForever
SEGA hasn’t announced anything yet. But we can only hope that Sonic 3DS and a new Mario & Sonic are in the works. And yes, it’s possible that Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors are the beginning of a new ‘renaissance’ of the franchise. I can only hope so, too, especially since I have gotten tired of people complaining about the new games.
@ChaoticFox
It’s you again, buttface who dislikes me. You should leave TSSZ News if you’re not going to be nice. And when did SEGA agree with the dumb negative reviewers about Sonic 2006′s flaws being fact and not opinion? You’re possibly wrong, here. It’s only an opinion and nothing more. Just because the game didn’t sell as well does not mean it deserves to be hated and nothing more. Sonic 2006 may have had flaws but so do many other games, and Sonic 2006 is still an enjoyable game and some people like it despite what you think otherwise.
When something does not work the way it was intended to work, that is a factual flaw, Vulpine. When a company admits to its product being unfinished and rushed into production – that is an admission of guilt. It’s like building an airplane without wings. It is a flawed airplane.
When are you going to stop saying irrelevant things that don’t make sense? Nobody here is talking about sales. Nobody on earth has EVER SAID “it deserves to be hated because it didn’t sell”.
I have never said that nobody likes Sonic 06. I have never said that it’s a BAD thing to like Sonic 06. I have congratulated you NUMEROUS TIMES on your talent in finding pleasure in the middle of that much crap.
All I have EVER said is that whether YOU like the game or not, it has so many things wrong with it that it is almost impossible to like for most people. This is a fact. See how many people hate it? There’s are reasons, and they have nothing to do with sales or SatAM or any of the other bullshit justifications you come up with because you are incapable of LISTENING.
Yay ChaoticFox is here. Now we see Vulpine get owned.
How about both of you shut the hell up and accept and respect each others opinions? I feel like the only logical Sonic fan left.
@RaveToTheGrave
We do respect Vulpine’s opinion. Everyone does. But then he tries to force his opinion on us, which is what we hate.
That’s the real problem. He says “it’s all a matter of opinion! …except when I’m talking and then it is fact and you are a horrible bitter old person for not agreeing”
lol
@Vulpine
Let me tell you a little story. Once upon a time, there was doomed little peripheral created for an excellent game console. This peripheral was the Sega CD. On this ill supported peripheral was released a game called Sonic CD. It was released to rave reviews from Sonic fans the world over. This, then young, man missed out on this experience until the advent of the Nintendo Gamecube, and the release of Sonic Gems collection.
Floaty, pointless (and bad) story telling aside, I played the game. FUCKING HATED IT! By FAR my least liked 2D Sonic game (not counting Labyrinth of course). I however, do not go around telling people it was trash, stomping on whatever views they have about it. I, personally, disliked it and, unless someone asks me specifically (or I stumble into a conversation) about it, that’s good enough for me. THAT is respecting someone’s opinion. What you do is exactly what I don’t, albeit on the opposite end of the spectrum. We know by now that you like Sonic ’06 (p.s. I enjoyed it to an extent too), shouldn’t that be enough?
I wish people would kindly shut up about Sonic Adventure 3. We had that, and it was called Sonic 06, and it was the biggest joke of a game I’ve ever played. Not everything needs to be a trilogy — I am comfortable with the path SEGA seems to be taking Sonic right now and would be pretty annoyed for it to be derailed into another decade-long mess of terriblenes.
I try not to force my opinion on anyone, but what bothers me is when people complain. I wish everyone had a happy face and positive thoughts instead of being moody all the time. I may rant sometimes but I do it for my own good, and at least I make sense while doing so and take some time to write my stuff instead of cussing or something. All I am trying to do is to bring peace to the community. The Sonic fandom has suffered from more debates then every other fandom, and that is just sad. Sonic games supposed to be fun, not a bunch of depressing flames and controversies. I want everyone to realize that.
I’m here on TSSZ News to comment on what I think of the current articles, and I also like browsing TSSZ because I have been a loyal Sonic fan for years and it’s nice to see what’s going on with the news today. I also want everyone to behave, which sadly, the majority of the Sonic fandom isn’t like that. I, on the other hand, is one of the more “intelligent” Sonic fans who uses proper grammar and never cusses. Because of that, I’m the most well-behaved here, despite what idiots think of me otherwise.
I’m also a good folk, unlike ChaoticFox who is bad. His name is also a huge insult to my favorite species (fox) and he doesn’t deserve to be on this site if he’s going to be mean. Besides, I can’t lose. I always win.
@serpx
Exactly. I always thought Sonic 2006 was Sonic Adventure 3 as well, but they changed the name for some reason.
@Skai Cyan
Like I said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If you can have your opinions then I’ll have mine.
@Skai Cyan
i completely agree with you there! Exact same thing here, cant stand Sonic CD, much prefer Sonic 3&k =P
Other than that, cant we all just get along?
and w00t for sonics 20th, cant wait to see whats coming this year =D
@Vulpine Are we not allowed to point out mistakes in a game? We complain to show developers there’s something wrong and that we weren’t having fun like they intended. Sure if you like the game and believe it has no imperfections then go ahead and enjoy it. But we on the other hand believe there is something wrong. These complains can sometimes help developers know what the community thought was wrong, they’ll know what not to do.
Basically if a game’s not fun, why stay quiet? We have to share opinions to let the developer know how to improve in future games.
@Vulpine: “I’m also a good folk, unlike ChaoticFox who is bad. His name is also a huge insult to my favorite species (fox) and he doesn’t deserve to be on this site if he’s going to be mean. Besides, I can’t lose. I always win.”
HOLY SHIT… I don’t think I can take such immaturity. “I always win”? “I can’t lose”? You’re a spoiled fucking brat. You can’t handle a wee bit of criticism can you? How do your parents treat you, huh? Like you’re the most important thing in the whole world? Are you an American? Are you a single child with no siblings whatsoever? Because, man…. You have clear superiority issues and think you’re ALWAYS RIGHT. You disgust me. You can’t handle the fact that someone’s opinion is different than yours. GROW UP ALREADY.
I have a pretty good feeling that one of the sonic games for 2011 is going to be a collection of the old levels, and re- making them in sonic colors/unleashed style, like rumors have said before. the reason why is cause, well take a look at this link…
http://sega.jp/topics/110101_1/
scroll down a little and look at the NEW CGI model of Sonic standing next one of the old computer screens! now think about it, SEGA dosen’t make these models for nothing, especially just for things on the computer. a prime example would be the classic collection cover for the nintendo DS. if you have the game or look up a picture of the cover for the game, take a look at Sonic popping out of the ring. that pose that Sonic is doing has been around since late 2009, or at least the drawing.
What i’m saying is that 3D model of sonic next to the moniter points to something big!
@Greg The Cat
Okay, I am not going to talk personal in a public site since all information about me should stay private, but yes, I’m an American and proud of it. Another thing is that I’m an adult (especially the fact that the first time I played a Sonic game was the one that started it all, back in 1991, and that’s probably long before you were born) and not some immature toddler like you think I am, so stop telling me to “grow up” because the chances are, you’re the one who’s immature and needs to grow up. Also: Stop saying cuss words at me. They’re illegal in some places, you know. I’m very intelligent and I happen to know billions of many different things. Of course I’m right because I know what is the truth and what isn’t. Why the heck would anyone prove me wrong? That’s impossible in my eyes. You don’t know who I am. If I disgust the crud out of you then leave me alone and don’t reply to me at all, and then I will learn the same by never replying to you back.
@lettman8520
Sure, it’s nice to point out the ‘mistakes’, bloopers or whatnot in a game, but don’t bug a developer about it all the time. And no, they’re not bringing cartoon Sonic back. Chances are, they’ll either keep the modern character designs or draw something new, or if ‘classic’ Sonic returns it will be from the games and not the cartoons (perhaps a new design that’s a fusion of classic game Sonic and modern Sonic). But this is SEGA’s decision, not yours. And the whole “Sonic has green eyes and modern look” debate is not a mistake, so stop thinking it as one. Because Sonic Colors used the ‘modern’ looks and it ended up being a successful game. I may be sorry, but I am sick and tired of all these whiners and ‘nostalgia hogs’ whining and complaining all the time. At least I keep my happiness when I play a Sonic game, unlike most people.
@andy avenue
I promise to get along but all these meanies are bullying me. However, I have decided that I will ignore those who are not nice to me and not reply back at all from now on. Hoping that they will learn the same as well.
It will be interesting to see what will happen in Sonic’s 20th anniversary this year, but time will tell.
@Vulpine When did I ever bring up any Sonic cartoon or mention Sonic’s design? LOL
It’s not like Sonic Team can’t sleep because of what we say. All I’m saying is that we are giving CRITICISM to Sonic Team (good and bad). We want them to learn from their mistakes and improve. If you believe 06 was fun and you enjoyed, then go ahead enjoy 06. However most of the community hated 06, Sonic Team has to take that into consideration so they never make the same mistakes they did again (yes these mistakes are obviously FACT).
@Vulpine No one’s bullying you. You don’t seem to act like an adult based off what I’ve seen. =/
@andy avenue
We all want to get along. But until Vulpine decides to act mature and accept CRITICISM that won’t happen.
@Vulpine
Like I said, if you liked Sonic 2006, then it’s your preference. I am not forcing you to hate the game. Personally, I do not regret trading that game in because I thought it was a giant piece of trash that had the most glaring issues, glitches, and flaws in a Sonic game, both in gameplay and storyline (if you wish for an example, reply to me and I’ll give you a few). The only good thing that I have to say about the game is that the soundtrack is fantastic (see Wave Ocean The Inlet or Solaris Phase 2).
Likewise, I personally believe that Sonic Unleashed is the most underrated Sonic game in existence, even though more people bash the game than give good remarks. But I can actually see why and try to understand why they don’t like the game: the Tornado levels, the Sun/Moon Medal hunting, frame rate problems, and the biggest controversy of the game – the Werehog factor, which I thought added flavor to the game even if everyone else says that it downright sucked ass. It gave you another play style instead of just breezing through the game in almost no time flat, with you just spamming the Boost Button.
If you like a game, then you like it. No one can force you to like something or not. But don’t try to force your opinions on someone else or try to dismiss the fact that a game has flaws. Every Sonic game has flaws, and every Sonic fan has a game they like or don’t like. Just deal with it.
@Greg The Cat
“Are you an American?” WTF, really?
Good lord that’s a lot more bullshit to read through. In the meantime, let’s all have a laugh at this gem of a sentence:
“I, on the other hand, is one of the more “intelligent” Sonic fans who uses proper grammar”
I is intelligent. Epic derp.
