Is that…Super Monkey Brawl?
All of five seconds of in-game footage from Sega’s Super Monkey Ball 3DS were shown at this past weekend’s Nintendo World event, but it may be enough to make some of the fighters among us salivate.
The quick montage assembled, in the video below at the 35 second mark, includes a variety of modes, including the single player campaign, a kart racing mode, and what eerily appears to be something right out of Smash Bros. We see a couple quick glimpses of multiplayer action in the vein of Monkey Fight, but with near complete player control and some hammer time. Might this mini-game be Sega’s pocket-sized answer to Nintendo’s very successful franchise on Wii? It’s certainly not going to be a huge component of the game, but so far it looks the most fun.

Hey Tristan, may i ask that you cover *somehow* the January 19th Press event for the Nintendo 3DS for the gaming news section. I’d really like to know all the details and such ^^
Why are all the recent SMB games Nintendo exclusive? There were games for the balance board and the DS. I’m surprised we haven’t seen a Super Monkey Ball Move/Kinect.
Oh, don’t I wish KeigoNiwa–we weren’t invited. We have literally no connections to Nintendo. That said, we may have a report from the Japanese event forthcoming that we can share.

That’d be kind of cool. The closest thing to Smash I’ve ever seen on a handheld was Sonic Battle for GBA, and it wasn’t all that close

You’ve never seen Jump Super/Ultimate Stars? Exactly like Smash except it’s like you’re always playing on time. They were DS games. There was also Guilty Gear Dust Strikers, an early DS game that was a tragedy to the Guilty Gear franchise, but an amazing Smash clone.
Then there’s Tales of VS for the PSP. It’s a crossover Smash clone featuring characters from Namdai’s various ‘Tales of’ RPGs. It was originally a GCN title but there’s also Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble for the PSP, it’s a smash clone at heart, but it’s almost never a straight up fight, always having some sort of mini-game-like objective to do during a round.
Except for Dust Strikers and Red Hot Rumble, they’re all in Japanese though, so unless you can read moon runes, you should youtube them. I’ve played Jump Super Stars, it’s amazing. Goku x Naruto and Zorro x Kenshin for the win.
