A Ray of Hope for Non-iOS Users
Sega of Japan today released the original 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog to certain mobile phones enabled with Google’s Android operating system, offering a possible olive branch to mobile phone users outside the Apple arena.
At a price of 700 yen–nearly 9 bucks in US money–the port is more in line with the iOS release, with a touchscreen D-pad in tow. There’s no word on whether the release will come to domestic shores, or whether this Android release will be the first in a series. But at the very least, it’s a sign Sega may be warming up to other mobile operating systems, so don’t lose hope for mobile Sega gaming yet, Droid users.

A real shame that Sega of Japan sees Android users as a target audience and while their localised branches don’t. A real shame, it is. I bet some people are already finding a way to get the original Sonic onto their ‘droids. Note how I said “some”. Because there are people who’d do that.
I should not have had “and” in the first sentence. Jeez, I’m not aware of my mistakes as I type these things out.
It’s worth noting that Sega’s bringing Super Monkey Ball 2 to Windows Phone 7. Perhaps Sega will finally throw a bone to those not happy with Apple.

Sonic 1? I was able to play that on a phone two phones ago. What is it with Androids? Why aren’t they getting iphone quality games?
Personally, there’s just too much fragmentation on the hardware. Not all android phones have the same exact processor, some phones will have more memory than others, making the quality of the game vary greatly.
