Dirty Tricks to Try and Prove PS3 Jailbreak Profiteering?

Court documents released in the course of this week allege Sony sent a $1 donation to the PayPal account of George Hotz, one of many known and unknown named in the PS3 jailbreak lawsuit, in an attempt to prove Hotz profited from his work.

Deeply embedded within a 282 page declaration of support on behalf of Sony attorney Ryan Bricker is Exhibit DD, a receipt for $1 transaction sent to Hotz’s E-Mail account January 7th.  It’s not clear whether Hotz holds a formal Paypal account, and it’s not immediately clear from the document alone who sent the money, but many who are watching this case assume it was either someone within Sony or their legal team, using it to their advantage.

If that’s true and attorneys for Hotz can prove it, it could be a back breaker for the heart of Sony’s case: That Hotz and the fail0verflow are making money off cracking the Playstation 3′s copy protection, and not doing it solely for research.  The company is seeking, among other things, a temporary restraining order preventing fail0verflow from distributing keys that crack the code, as well as an order of impoundment, requiring Hotz and others named in the suit to turn over all materials that contain those keys to Sony.

A hearing has been set on the TRO and other motions tomorrow morning. Anything from the issuance of that order to a case dismissal could occur. We’ll let you know no matter what the outcome.
