And Down Nearly 10% for Holiday Shopping Season
While the US economy appears on the edge of recovery, 2010 can be best described as a delayed response from the recession.
Official NPD figures are out for last month and for the year in whole. Gamasutra reports that December figures were down 9 percent versus 2009. In all, a hair over $5 billion was spent. For the year, $19.3 billion in sales were achieved, but that’s a five percent decline versus 2009, and a six percent drop when discounting PC sales.
For December, Wii remained the top seller despite a 36 percent year-to-year drop, with 2.36 units moving. Aided by Kinect, the XBOX 360 was second with 1.86 million consoles sold–the only console to see YTY increases. The PS3 sold 1.21 million consoles in the same period, rounding out the big three with just an 11 percent drop.
In case you were wondering, no, Sonic Colors did not crack the software top 10 for last month.

“[...] Nearly 10% f or Holiday [...]”
Small mistake in header, just so you know.
Kind of sad, considering last year was arguably the best year in gaming since 1998.
I was really glad that the Wii had such a successful holiday season last year. After that 36% drop, I was honestly starting to worry that the Wii was dieing, but the holidays made me know that it would stick around strong. Ya hear that Sony! No amount copycat vision in the world can steal Nintendo’s thunder!
Oh, about the 5% drop. I’m pretty sure the 3ds will restore that loss and more.
How does a console have a 36% drop and still beat the next competitor by .5 million units? God damn, Nintendo.
