Sony Miscommunicates, Fans Briefly Rage

For a few moments, that quality control didn’t last long.

Sony’s European division today mistakenly announced that the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog, littered with bugs and reviled by most of Sonic fandom, wound be re-released this Spring.  Sony promises the download would be “re-mastered,” according to community managers.  Improvements include trophy support and…well, that’s it, so it was said multiple times.

Given that Sega’s commitment to weeding out poor Sonic fare was disclosed not four months ago, a near straight re-release and stance reversal borders on insulting, especially for Sonic’s 20th anniversary.

Good thing, then, that it isn’t true.

After several minutes of large scale gamer strife across the Internet, Sega of America Community Manager Aaron Webber intervened on NeoGAF, clarifying that it is the original Sonic from 1991 being added, not the 2006 one.

“In fact, the game that is coming out is actually the original Sonic the Hedgehog – a real absolute classic, and one with far faster loading times,” Webber said.  “The Sony rep got his games mixed up.”

PSN Plus users will have first dibs on 1991 Sonic when released during the March-early April period. As for the 2006 flop, Webber said there’s a very specific place for it now.

“Sonic 2k6 is stuck in an eternal loading screen somewhere deep within the SEGA code vaults in Japan,” Webber quipped.

So, while one of the most important quality control still exists at Sega, it appears another part of it needs work.
