A Preview for the Birds…and Bots
This weekend, Streak Thunderstorm posted another lengthy preview of upcoming fan game Mecha Madness for the public to review.
The more than eight minute piece, which is below, combines many elements seen in previous previews into a more complete run-through of what to expect from the action RPG. Taking place in the first stage of a very Advance-d Angel Island, you’ll see Sonic plow through enemies, mini-bosses, and a very persistent bird. All of it looks very smooth, and with Sonic’s numerous talents on display, it is a game many hope to play soon.
Unfortunately, there’s no word on when that time may come. You’ll just have to watch below and wait with great anticipation.

Nice!!!
Madness is a fitting title for this.
A bird? Lol.
I have to say, I love the F-Zero tunage! It fits well!
Ok I admit, I don’t know much about fangames. I’ve seen some small demo titles and BIG ones coming/not coming like Sonic Boom (or was it Sonic Blast? I just remember the thing being Sonic Rush 9000 because it was holyjesusshit fast), Sonic Fan Remix, and Sonic 2 HD.
…..but I’ve also seen enough from other titles I can’t remember by name (such as 3D Sonic Fan games, one which was a quake mod and another which was supposedly Sonic Unleashed but..remade? Something like that) and I just….ugh. Watching all of that video I can’t help but be bugged by the following:
>Final Fantasy level up jingle
>F-Zero music
>Tails is even more useless here than in Sonic 2
>Fire Sonic
>Oh wait, nevermind, he can use the elements like he’s a Pokemon or something on command.
>Instant-Transmission Sonic or whatever is gamebreaking as almost anything else is since there is no meter or balance to the use of the moves that come along with these forms. Lame.
>”Battle” music that isn’t the level’s tunes itself is completely out of place
>A GRIFFIN. Wtf?
>Bland level design and coloring
>Weird sound effect choices
…and finally, it was just boring to watch. I realize this is a preview, and by large a tech demo yes, so I am seeing a slice of what the game is capable of doing or what have you. But that doesn’t look any bit of exciting in the least and several parts don’t feel original AT ALL. Super Mario Bros Z, a simple flash animation, feels more original than this. Sonic 2 HD and Fan Remix appear to be REAL fan games people want to play. Also take into consideration I haven’t seen any of the other videos leading up to the project’s progress up until now but I doubt it would’ve made a difference.
It doesn’t look fun at all not to mention the clusterfuck of action (IE: I’m physically unable to tell how to even ‘fight’ by watching the video) onscreen so no.
As the horse from Ren & Stimpy said. “No sir, I don’t like it.”
>”You’ll just have to watch below and wait with great anticipation.”
Yeah okay Tristan, have fun with that.
the only good fangame to use sonic advance sprites. Good job.
Haru. Your expectations are very very high if you call SMBZ just a simple flash. You have to look some of the other trailers he uploaded. This fangame is pretty good.
@Haru:
How are my expectations very high? I didn’t call SMBZ a simple flash, I said (or meant) that if it was a game even that would be more entertaining to watch/play than this.
It doesn’t look fun to me. I don’t see exactly what the problem is here.
Stuff like this puts the fan back in fan game, that’s for sure.
Only a couple things to say about this:
Affording Sonic more than the most basic of ‘Smash’ style moves kinda destroys his gameplay doesn’t it? That’s not even talking the ridiculousness of the elemental powers. (Sonic used ‘Vine Whip’!)
I love that old school sound effect on the warp, but was annoying after the 20th time. Deafen it a bit or choose a different one.
@Haru
Everyone’s a critic nowadays.
@Streak:
And I believe that even though people like you disagree, I don’t think my opinion should be taken apart just because I gave it an honest try and REALLY don’t like it.
There are issues with it and, as Chaotic said…”This puts the ‘fan’ in fangame allright.”
