Sonic’s Anniversary–Perhaps Sonic Anniversary–Is Clearer
The website Original Sound Version has clarified some reports circulating for several days prior about the role Tony Harnell will have in Sonic’s 20th anniversary.
Harnell, for those unaware, was a singer for Norway based TNT, and in this community is best known for lending his voice to several Sonic image songs of yesteryear, including Escape from the City from 2001′s Sonic Adventure 2.
It is that song Harnell confirmed he was re-recording on Facebook yesterday, according to OSV. In his words:
“Sang the new version of Escape From The City today w/Ted Poley for the SEGA game Sonic The Hedgehog:) Great seeing all the guys again today. Cheers, TH”
Previously there was a little less certainty on whether this was for a soundtrack or an upcoming game, as given Wave Master’s own plans to commemorate Sonic’s 20th the former makes sense. But given Harnell’s specific indication of it being for a game, it looks more like the latter comes in play–specifically as it pertains to what is being considered Sonic Anniversary, reported here in October.
Nothing has been made official by Sega, but with chatter like this, it’s become increasingly likely we will be playing something special, if not nostalgia, later this year. We’ll bring you more when made available.

Sounds to me like he was talking about Sonic the Hedgehog as a franchise rather than a specific game. If this anniversary game is real then they better bring Masato Nakamura back to remaster Green Hill Zone.

I’m liking this very much. Its hard to imagine what type of game it’ll be though. Will there be a story rapped around all these recreated stages, or will it be more of a “greatest hits” setup, where you have a map/select screen with all the stages layed out. Whatever the story is i’m definitely looking forward to it.
Kellie from Sega of America also hinted there may be a chao garden in there, if you read a comment from her on last weeks Free Stuff Friday.

New version of “Escape from the City”……hints at a Chao Garden……yeah, it’s going to be Sonic Adventure 3. Didn’t they have absolutely no plans for Sonic Adventure 3 back in October? You know what, they probably had a game planned for the 20th Anniversary, but they’ll name it Sonic Adventure 3 just to capitalize on the fans wanting the game, resulting in them earning more profit.

Do you know what would be funny? Calling Sonic´s Anniversary game just Sonic the Hedgehog. I would add even more confusion in all kind of places, and at the same time, it would be a strange attempt to forget Sonic the Hedgehog from 2006. I would laugh like crazy if this becomes true

I believe in some earlier news Sega said they would make a Sonic Adventure 3 if there was enough voices from the Sonic fanbase.
Crush 40 performing music for it… Kellie hints of a Chao Garden… Escape from the City remastered… This is all too awesome to believe. It’s going to be Sonic Adventure 3. The last ‘Sonic Adventure’ game was (in my mind) Sonic Unleashed, since it was originally called ‘SA3′ and is still called ‘Sonic World Adventure’ in Japan. I’m pretty certain that Unleashed and SA3 will have a link, probably similar in gameplay, since SEGA has pretty much got the formula for 3D now. Just stick to the Colours/Unleashed method, maybe a little bit more 3D (because I, personally, feel that Colours and Unleashed included an awful lot of 2D gameplay that stole the spotlight, and I just prefered the 3D sections) and I bet you IGN will give the game at least an 8.5.
It maybe too early to determine if this game will be SA3 or not, but an awful lot of the fanbase have been crying out for this game for YEARS. So SEGA might have this one in their bag of surprises… good surprises, I hope…
Oh god no. Please let the game not be SA2 related in anyway. Hopefully this is something inconsequential.

@KMetalMind – Lol, yeah that’s what I was thinking. I don’t think they would name it Sonic the Hedgehog considering we already have Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis) and Sonic the Hedgehog (Xbox360). Not only would it would be too confusing, but it would also be funny as hell. What would be even better is if they just called each new game “Sonic the Hedgehog.” jk
Jim’s got a point. I mean, really, how much sense would it make to re-use City Escape in a brand new Adventure game? Not only would they have to tailor the story to it (already a bad idea), but it would just feel silly to hear that theme in a new zone. Like listening to a remastered Green Hill Zone while running through the Death Egg.

Rumors about compilation was denied, and Sega recently done enough fanservice for the SA fans, so I suspect that this game will be relating to the SA series. This new version of Escape From The City can be played in regular city level, for nostalgia sake.
If this new game is Sonic Adventure 3, I hope the gameplay and authentics is more along the lines of the Sonic Adventure 1 style with Sonic Adventure 2′s amount of polish or higher.

Mike, there’s just something different about re-using a story-centric lyrical theme. That’s why I tried to use the extreme comparison of Green Hill and Death Egg. I don’t mind recycling or remixing traditional stage bgm, but re-using a vocal track like that just seems tacky.
I’m excited to hear the track, regardless, but if I find myself playing a brand new Adventure game with the exact same level concept and music as SA2, I will be most disappointed :/

I would love to hear that because Crush 40 is the best band Sonic the Hedgehog ever had. I hope the game would come on September because Sept. 13 is my birthday and I love that blue hedgehog. I put almost ever thing in my stories because I’m a 16-year-old, female storybook writer who had a strong interest of cartoon animation. I also made counterparts of my characters as the Sonic ones. I love their songs because they’re the best along with the other Sonic singers. I put some of those songs in my stories and made my characters sing.
