The Only Two Characters in the Top 50
The Spanish website Sonic Paradise has published Guinness World Records’s results for the top 50 video game characters at all time.
There was some Sonic presence on the list; the blue hedgehog placed 10th overall, beating out other prominent names like Crash Bandicoot, Pikachu, and Donkey Kong. In what may be a sign of the times for the fandom, only one other character made the top 50. It wasn’t a two-tailed fox or a tough echidna, but Shadow the Hedgehog, first introduced in 2001′s Sonic Adventure 2. He placed 25th overall.
The world remains hooked on a certain plumber. Taking the top spot on Guinness’s list was Mario.

I checked out the top 10 just to see who beat out Sonic. That section alone made me too sad to even attempt to read the rest. Sign of the times indeed. Sigh…
Doesn’t really surprise me much… although I am surprised that Sonic is only #10. Interesting that Shadow made the list as well, but it didn’t surprise me that he beat out other Sonic characters considering his popularity in the series.
The list is kinda like a mascot sandwich. With Mario and Sonic the bread that holds it together.

What about Tails? He’s been part of the franchise since Sonic 2, He can fly, he can invent neat gadgets like planes, translators, emerald-detectors, artificial emeralds, and even an entire starhip (in Sonic X). Don’t forget Knuckles. Sure, hasn’t been that great recently, but he has super strength that can break down walls that Sonic or Tails can’t do even with their spin, but to mention that he can climb vertical walls. Have I forgotten Dr. Robotnik, THE MAIN FREAKING ANTAGONIST. He’s a badass, maniacal genius that creates thousands of battle fleets robot armies every single game without using a budget (all thanks to the wonders of video-game logic). Hell, even Metal Sonic is more deserving of poularity than the emo-hog (who’s only reason for existance today is for fanservice, much like 90% of the entire cast now).
I’m not having a good week when it comes to a topic like this. Even on the Sonic Wikia Character Tournament, Tikal the Echidna beat Dr. Robotnik, a freaking useless, one-shot character beat the main antogonist. So far, Tails (a main character since Sonic 2) is up against Silver the Hedgehog (only playable in one of the worst games of all time). Guess who’s winning. Bwahahaha!!!!

honestly though, if there was a popularity contest between the entire sonic cast, in my opinion, sonic would be rather low on the list. Really all he does is run fast and spin dash. Shadow can do that, PLUS harnes the power of chaos energy, sometimes without the use of a chaos emerald. Knuckles *in the original sonic games* could run fast, spin dash, glide, break down barriers, and climb on walls. Tails *in the original sonic games* could run fast(er than sonic in some cases) spin dash, fliy, and swim. Amy while not the fastest runner, could kick anyone’s ass with that piko piko hammer of hers. Silver *in my humble opinion* is one of the few video game characters who used psychic power in an appropriate, none broken manner.
I understand why sonic is so popular, and i’m not disagreeing with the fact that he won tenth place, but if you really think about what the rest of the cast can do, he really shouldn’t be any competion XD that being said, i’m really glad Shadow got 25th out of everyone else ^^
really though, Layle from FFCC: The Crystal Bearers, makes Silver look like a god of psychic abilities XD

Well I am happy for both they made it but personally Tails should be on that list somewhere too(above shadow sorry)…Sorry non tails fans LOL. Tails is awesome too. I wish I had his genious too. Argh. Take out Nathan Drake and all the GTA & CoD characters & I agree with a lot of this list (Sonic should be somwhere higher though). Also I can totally understand Shadow placing on the list instead of Tails. Even as my favorite character, I know he’s not the coolest, that definitely belongs to Shadow.

It’s not a battle royale. It’s not about which characters could win in a fight :/
If nothing else, Sonic is the most iconic character in his series, and that alone gives him the edge over any of the others who may or may not have “better” ability sets.
As for your justification for Shadow: that’s exactly what makes him so lame. “Oh look at me, I’m the overpowered god-moding recolor with a horrible joke of a backstory! I can do everything the hero can do and MORE because I am an awesome example of lazy uninspired character design!”

While I’m glad that Sonic beat out some major competetion like Samus and Pikachu, the characters ahead of him are a fucking joke. Kratos? Master Chief? Pac-Man (when was the last time he was in a GOOD game?)? Lara Croft? I can definitely see Mario and Link, kinda see Cloud, Snake, and Gordon Freeman, but seriously, Sonic should’ve been in the top 5, based on the characters ahead of him. The list as a whole though, is a mess. Why are Naruto and Goku there? Ryu is lower than the likes of Marcus Fenix and Altair? Niko Bellic beating Samus and Mega Man? CJ Johnson ahead of Dante and Sephiroth? And then there are some extremely notable abscenes, like Luigi and Chun-Li from Street Fighter. Makes me want to kill something, but that’s a nerd for you.

Suprisingly, this is the result of a poll, which makes this list even more confusing and irritating. Just goes to show where our collective mentality as gamers has gone. Either that, or the poll was compltely done by Americans, who are more familiar with the likes of Master Chief and Marcus Fenix then they are with Ryu or Dante.
I dont really care how popular sonic is. In fact id prefer it if he was a secret gem cause only the off beat thinkers can appreciate the franchise along with NiGHTS, but if someone like kratos, or lora croft beat sonic, than you might as well let shadow beat him too cause obviously thats wut the list consist of. Its not about iconic status for this list, it seems it was more about modern, overly realistic or overly dark themed characters with the exception of mario just for the fact that he is freakin mario.
On timeless list where modern entries and recent memory dont have an affect and maybe when sonic games get back to their good reputation, then we would see a list where sonic is at least in the top 5 and some randon dude from some Call of Duty game is no where to be found. F*ck shadow as well

I thought Sonic would have been higher, but ten’s a respectable place all the same. Though why on earth Soap in there? And up that high? No way Pikachu is below that guy :/

I’m more upset at Master Chief beating Sonic than Mario being #1 (let’s be honest, Mario kinda deserves #1). Freaking Master Chief is a faceless character!

Ryu and Bowser and Peach are way too low. Dante, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and the prince are too low. Luigi and Wario are not on the list at all. SAMUS IS NOT IN THE TOP 10!!!!! WTF, Ash Ketchum? CJ Johnson, really? SAMUS IS NOT IN THE TOP 10!!!!! All these bland Call of Duty characters Call of Duty, and only one Halo character and two Gears of War characters. No John Marston? Mega-man and Yoshi should to be higher. Kirby needs to be in the top 10. PAC-Man higher than Sonic, seriously? SAMUS IS NOT IN THE TOP 10!!!!! Eddie Riggs needs to be WAY higher. These are VIDEO GAME characters, so why are Naruto and Goku up there? SAMUS IS NOT IN THE TOP 10!!!!! Not a single Tekken, SoulCalibur, or Dead or Alive character, and not enough Street Fighter characters. No love for Eggman? No Squall Leonhart.

Considering Sonic’s terrible past, it’s FANTASTIC that he has managed to place 10th. Hopefully his future will bring him higher up the list.
