Kuta “Not ruling out the possibility of something surfacing in the future”
Richard Kuta has followed through on his February timetable to release a short animated trailer from his Sonic fan film project.
As had been stated previously, it will for now be the farthest this project goes. But in a statement Kuta released to TSSZ News within the past hour, he affords some possibility of it going further–presumably if the community will support it.
That statement, below, is followed by the trailer, which shows off The Advent of Metal scene.
This is an animated sequence directly adapted from a Sonic movie script. It was penned by Digital Production Artist, Richard Kuta back in 2005 and revised in 2010. The animation was helmed by Damian Ciancio and the talented crew at Linterna Magica; a studio in Argentina responsible for “Los Pintin: Al Rescate” and various small projects contracted by Disney, Filmax, and Patagonik. The scene was digitally hand drawn on a tablet and produced through After Effects. Music Score and Sound Effects was composed by Andrew Keene; an aspiring young musician that showcased a professional demeanor and devotion towards the Sonic franchise. The piece heard in this scene, is compromised of a more ominous take on Final Zone (Sonic 3 & Knuckles) that transitions into Metallic Madness (Sonic CD US ver). Character Voices volunteered by the humble cast of The Voice Actors Alliance. Sound Mixing, Editing and Visual Effects provided by Richard Kuta.
Due to funding issues, there are no plans to continue the project, but we’re not ruling out the possibility of something surfacing in the future. Overall, the concept for an official Sonic movie has always existed, and if one was ever produced, it should deliver an endearing experience for all fans to enjoy. To put a capstone on this six year endeavor, we want to extend our appreciation everyone’s assistance that brought this fun little project to life and the passion they conveyed for the speedy blue hedgehog that has sped across a platform of media for twenty years.

I will admit, that did turn out better than I thought it would.
That having been said, the voice acting is like a really bad YouTube dub (which of course this video kinda is…..which pretty much makes the comment redundent). The animation wasn’t bad, but as others have said, the designs and colour are pretty poor. And to me, this looks like Flash animation, kinda nice Flash, but Flash nonetheless.
From the very low expectations I had for this, I was impressed. Good Job Kuta.
impressive!
The worst thing to happen to Metal Sonic since Sonic Heroes, this has seriously made me ill
Sonic’s 8o is glorious meme material, I don’t blame you Sonic I was making the same face when Bayonetta legs Metal showed up. Going to go play some Sonic CD and get drunk to flush this out my mind.
Wasn’t impressed lol. I was expecting some really fluid and nostalgic traditional animation. But this looks like more of a generic good flash movie.
I think he really hurt this teaser by over hyping it. On Sonic Retro he told everyone it was going to be Don Bluth quality. This is obviously no where near Don Bluth quality. I understand he’s on a limited budget, and thats exactly why I think it was foolish for him declare such things in the first place. Truth be told, this isn’t the worse Sonic animated flash I’ve seen. But it’s nothing more than that, a mediocre flash animation. I would comment on the questionable voice acting, but he didn’t make any absurd promises about those.
Also, I guess he’s going to judge the community’s feedback at forums and sites like these. Because that video currently only allows for approved comments. It’s never a good sign when one sets up youtube comments that way.
“Due to funding issues, there are no plans to continue the project” called it!
…this is a movie…? Wow. If something like this ended up in theaters, I wouldn’t pay a cent to see it.
Yeah nothing to see here, move along folks.
I’d prefer a new episode of Sonic Shorts over this any day.
Credit where its due, the animation is pretty good
though the voice acting lets to down badly
I guess for it being a fan film, it’s good….
I should’ve known this was a waste of time to follow…..
I note that both the comments are moderated on the video, and the ratings disabled. So basically, no negative views or constructive criticism allowed.
I made a post earlier giving some good advice as a fellow youtuber, and I note that has yet to be put on the video. So for the moment, Kuta is acting exactly as his encyclopedia dramatica entry states.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Yeah, uh…. I’m gonna go back to sleep to now, so i can get that horribly animated. poorly voiced, catastrophe of movie. Seriously, that was worse than that mc’donalds commercial from pakistan.
*out of my head*
that was good but they should fix sonic a little bit more.
Horrible animation, horrible person, and I’m just happy to see that this horrible experience is finally over and done with…
I hope…
Pretty cool!
good animation!
That should not have taken six years. I know animation is a slow process but six years? For as big a deal as he made of this whole project he really should have picked a much stronger portion of the script to animate. This is especially true if he was hoping SEGA would take him seriously on it at all (spoiler alert: they won’t). I’ll forgive the bad acting as almost unavoidable at this point in his directing “career.” What I won’t forgive is all this buildup for the same amount of animation quality as just one or two of the “Sonic Shorts” segments. Except those are made in half the time and are twice as entertaining! I’m sorry for the rant I’m just really disappointed.
Gotta give it credit for animating better than I thought it would, but jesus christ that dialogue was like nails on a chalkboard. The voice acting didn’t do it any favors, but even a pro cast couldn’t save it from the cringe-inducing script. Just wow ><
This definitely made me wish I had a real Sonic movie to look forward to, but in the end I'm kind of grateful that this is where this train stops.
Yeah, Sonic bye.
Well, concidering that it’s a SatAM based fanfilm, the animation is pretty good….I guess. Could have been worse; it could have compaired to its predecessor, but in this day in age I guess not.
Not really enjoying how he made Tails a whiny little kid and how Sally and Bunnie had the best animation out of everything.; its like everyone has been saying; ‘Its SatAM based so Sally and Bunnie are the stars.’ =\
All in all this just proves that I cannot hate/not be satisfied with anything that’s Sonic related. As much as I think this should have been better, I’m… Actually a bit sad to see that this won’t be continued. I wanna know what happens!
this made me lol
I’m sorry but I cannot stand seeing Tails be a whiny baby and depending on Sally and Bunnie.
Like xOR said, the mary-sues are in the spotlight, not Sonic.
Terrible animation, even worse voice acting… I never had my hopes up for this, so I can’t really say I’m disappointed.
The only problem I can see with it AS A FAN MOVIE has to be Tails’ downright obnoxious voice. The lip synching isn’t perfect, but that’s to be expected in amateur animations; and heck, lip syncs are rarely perfect in translated anime, but no one complains about that.
Robotnik and Sally have their voices spot-on. The animation is simpler than I expected, but once again, this IS a fan film. I *do* wonder why it took six years and so much money just to do THIS, but I’ve never honestly expected Kuta to take the efficient way (which, admittedly, would have been to either dump the project entirely or turn it into a media that was easier to produce).
All in all, I’m at once surprised by the quality and not surprised by the quality. One thing’s for sure, I’m not at all surprised by the reactions.
@Kate Vunza
Well, with animation and voice acting of this quality, this teaser was never going to be critically acclaimed. But he made matters worse by promising Don Bluth quality, and didn’t deliver anything near it. It also doesn’t help matters, that this time, the majority of the money used was from donations. Donations he took for under the premise of making a Sonic fan movie, a completed Sonic fan movie. Not a 30 second teaser. If I was one of those 10 ~ 12 people who donated I would be pretty upset right now (to say the least).
You know, I’m beginning to see why many have said that the script was horrible. The dialogue was pretty corny, looking at this.
Seriously, i make much better, :/
……I should really consider raising my ‘I’m interested in this’ bar. That was pretty bad. Like xOR said though, I kinda wanna know how it ends too.
Hmm, I keep seeing people say “Don Bluth quality”. Let’s see…
*Wikipeida’d Don Bluth*
Okay now, I’m actually kinda pissed ([ ] that much) that he said it would be of that quality. Those were some of my favorite movies of yesteryear. This was extra shitty compared to those.
This is worst then i expected. Just seems that the online community is just wasting time giving him attention with a poorly made film. Might as well have a 15 year old make the script and do the animations for this cruddy mess. Sega should take more legal actions against this guy.
….Those voices were kinda bad. Yeah the script sounds kinda corny too. Not as corn as the games, but still. I’ll watch it when it comes out though. If it does.
The animation was decent, but it was still flash animation. The voice acting was god awful in every way, and the dialogue may as well be written by Tommy Wiseau.
I hope this doesn’t see future funding.
@Shawn Smith: “You’re tearing me apart, Lisa!”
You just reminded me why The Room is funniest movie like, ever.

Sonic is enjoying himself a little too much. What a glorious train wreck this is.
Hey everyone, its time for the METALLIC HOEDOWN.
@Eggfang and Forte
LOL. The humor I got out of those two videos more than make up for how bad the actual thing is <3
Bad voices, bad animation, bad writing, bad directing (lol black circle view of faces? ) and all around bad everything. I love how SonManic is going on about “not enough funding” these days. I remember a time where he told me personally that he was getting SEGA to back this little film of his (so far as to claim it’d be green lit) and that he was personally contributing several hundred thousand dollars he claimed he acquired from inheritance.
(EDIT – Inflammatory -T)
I also love how he’s also robbed many community members of their money through “donations” and yet after all these years, this joke of a “trailer” is all he has to show for it. I can’t believe anyone was willing to give this guy the benefit of a doubt considering his history, wishful thinking perhaps? I’m just glad he’s created yet another hard piece of evidence of how he’s a deceitful douche bag, hopefully he won’t be able to fool anyone any longer.
Joystiq just picked this up and said it wasn’t bad, the gaming press are like parents after their child hands them a diaster-piece of a drawing.
Don’t judge the guy man. Sega doesn’t, specially cause fan projects serve as advertisement for the series.
What I want to know is, is this really the only scene that’s been fully animated? The trailer he made back in 2009 suggests that there’s much more than this scene finished….unless that trailer was pure teaser (which means putting in shots that are either not in or have nothing to do with the finished project…IE…the “maybe just a salad” line from the Incredibles. ) I have a few gripes about some of the animation just like everyone else….based on the demo reel from the animation company..they could have done much better. A higher frame rate would be nice. Honestly, tails’ voice doesn’t bother me as much because it’s supposed to be based on SatAM…the times where tails was really 7 years old. Bunnie’s voice is the bad one…Just barely can hear the southern accent. I dunno….I’m probably just wasting my time thinking about it. I’m still the kind of fan that would love to see the finished product…but if nothing’s gonna happen…I’ll keep waiting for Eddie Lebron’s film.
Hey, it’s not all bad.
At least now we can all do the Metallic Hoedown.
YEEHAW!
Terrible animation, pitiful voices, and ugly character design.
Well, the animation is pretty decent for a fan project, but the designs are kinda mediocre. But the voice acting… oh lord…
I liked the animation, I didn’t love it though… The voice acting at first I though was gonna be pretty spot on when Robotnik started talkin but then outta nowhere I heard “SAAAAWWWNIIK!”. from that point it all went down hill for me. I didn’t have high expectations for this film, but this was just a fail of a let down. I understand its supposed to be a little corny, just like the real show kinda used to be with Sonic’s phrases and what not, but this little 1 minute and 8 second teaser has done hardly anything for me. The only reason why I would like to see it finished is because I feel bad for those poor people who donated MONEY. I understand Animation takes a very long time, being an animator myself, but with how many years were put into this, we should see alot more effort! the trailer was way more rewarding than this. alright I’m done.
Woah figured this would fail, but man I had no idea. Seriously people gave money to this?
Wow you guys can really be pissed off for nothing
leave him a chance, i bet 95% of you can’t even do a .gif animation.
It looks like they put more attention towards Sally and Bunnie than the other guys. The voice acting is freaking abysmal.
For all the shit I gave this movie it actually is pretty decent.
Most of you just sound like you hoped on the hatewagon agianst Kuta and haiting on this film just out of spite.
Crysore: But people were kind of wanting a full movie
Kuta talks, and talks, and talks – He doesn’t do much.
