A Peek at “The Rematch” Coming in May
Just before Sonic comic fans get immersed in the 225th issue come May, they will have something else to digest in the lead-up, and that’s Free Comic Book Day.
This year, FCBD falls on May 7th, and Archie will be participating with a special 32 page Sonic story dubbed The Rematch. It will pit Ixis Naugus against Sonic once again. A little earlier that expected, the preview for the issue was released earlier this week.
With that in mind, we have the cover and first six pages of the issue below. That follows Archie’s official synopsis.
“The Rematch”: Join the excitement with an ALL NEW “Free Comic Book Day” battle royal! Sonic goes to pay his respects for a fallen friend in the Southern Tundra and stumbles upon Ixis Naugus! How has the evil wizard managed to return? How can Sonic beat this magical master of the elements? All this plus exclusive new data files to tell you just who’s who!

Ah come on–a rehash? I know free comic book day is a chance to get non sonic readers interested, but seriously, they had to do a remake? Nothing new? I could maybe understand a reused concept or something, but just re-writing a more than half a decade old story? I ask what’s the point? It ties in with 225–whoop-de-do-hoo.
One of Ian’s shortcomings, IMO, is that he doesn’t create much of new material–very little, actually; it’s mostly reused concepts/ideas/plots/whatever. Which is cool, but not when that’s the majority of your work. I’m itchin for something I haven’t seen yet, not things I have seen but done differently/in a new way. And now he’s re-written an entire story.
Oh well, whatevs. Sorry for the rant, just had to get that off my chest.

@Dr.Eggfang I believe that’s part of Naugus’ cape mis-colored. You’re right though it looks laughably wacky.
The Death Egg looks…interesting.
Didn’t the cover say NEW story….? Not that I mind seeing a rehash of a special fixed up with some sweet art but, I really look forward to Sonic issues that I haven’t already read. The best FREE COMIC DAY issue of Sonic was the one where Eggman controls Sonic with that microchip. Snively got owned in that one.

Fortunately that issue was the one free-comic-book-day issue I did pick up. The dialogue in that one was pretty full of win, especially since the body controlling microchip didn’t control his mouth. Oh and the issue took a few shots at Sonic 2006, which is always fun.
