One an Editors’ Choice, Another the Readers’
There’s good news out of Sonic Stadium today concerning two of last year’s four major Sonic releases. Both Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I and Sonic Colors have been recognized in the 2010 Nintendo Power Awards, out now in the March 2011 issue.
The gorgeous Colors received an award for Best Graphics by NP editors. The big surprise is one you wouldn’t expect reading some community forums the past several months: Sonic 4 won the Readers’ Choice award for best WiiWare Game. That means enough people voted in the awards to take Sonic 4 to the top–even beating out Cave Story, which the editors bestowed the same honor to on their end.
It’s a great honor for both games, though someone will surely demand a recount on the latter. Thanks to krazeeKidd102 for sending this in. If you have news to share, be sure to share it with us by clicking Send News Tips at the top of every page.

YES! YES! Oh boy I need to calm down. This is great news. =D
Well thank god these games got the justice they deserved despite picky fans.
Colours was gorgeous, no doubt, but I’d always thought that either Mario Galaxy 2 or especially Kirby’s Epic Yarn, might have won. Then again, I might just be giving Colours too little credit.
You’re welcome, Tristan.
I’m pretty happy for Sonic Colors getting “Best Graphics” Award, but I don’t really understand how the hell Sonic 4 got “best of WiiWare” award at all, especially when games like MegaMan 10 and CaveStory are also on WiiWare. But then, I scrolled down and read “Readers” and I immediately understood.
Yes! I loved both games. so that’s great that there getting the recognition they deserve.
I find it very fitting that the physics-haters of Sonic 4 get to have this very timely comeuppance. Of course, I haven’t actually PLAYED Sonic 4, but I HAVE played up to Act 3 of Marble Zone in Sonic 1 (in Sonic Classic Collection DS), and I have to say that “cheap shots” are nothing new to the franchise at all. Given all the hate that goes around towards some of my favorite parts of the franchise, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was nothing wrong with Sonic 4′s physics at all.
Of course, there’s always the chance that Sonic 4′s win is entirely due to the efforts of 4chan, in which case it could technically be assumed to be evil…
@Kate Vunza
Err…yes. There is a lot wrong with the physics. If you ever get Sonic 4 (which I don’t recommend), try rolling down a slope. Try spindashing off of a ledge. Do it all without holding the D-Pad right. You’ll definetely see a difference.
Oh, and as for the “cheap shots”, while I admit that the classics had their spoonful of cheap hits, at least those “hits” were from spikes and badniks, and not instant-death bottomless pits.
Colors won in GRAPHICS over Galaxy 2 in a NINTENTDO magazine? That, is awesome.
@Kate Vunza
Totally agree about the whole ‘cheap shot’ thing. There is some validity in being annoyed at times when you really should not have died (i.e. a bug where you miss a jump or fall through a solid floor), but I always find it strange when people get upset over things like bottomless pits. Old Sonic games had plenty of those, and so do most standard platformers. It’s simply the most common way of dying in those games. Except for boss battles, how else are you going to die in a genre that isn’t supposed to be combat-heavy?
Games are way too easy nowadays. I may be one of very few who actually enjoyed how hard Eggmanland in Unleashed (360) was. Sure, I saw the game over screen a few times, but life goes on. Playing through Sonic 2 years and years ago without the save feature? I can’t even count the number of times I had to start all over again on the final boss alone, but I didn’t mind, because it was a good game that I enjoyed playing.
Now that I’m done being preachy, I must confess that I still have to play Sonic 4 at some point
Erm. Well, readers of Nintendo Power were seemingly so interested in “game like Sonic 2″ that they found fact it isn’t awful equal to “fact” it is cool.
FINALLY! People have come to their senses about Sonic Colors’ graphics and Sonic 4 best game on Wiiware. Sonic Colors IS the best looking game on the wii, and I’ve heard people say,”Your wrong. SMG2 looks better than Sonic Colors.” I just want to scream YYYEEEEESSS!

sonic 4 episode 2 is underway
^link is broken…
Oh, now I see it. Cool…
@Blippa: they’ve edited it with new info. new zone themes confirmed!!!
Who’s ‘they’?
Rmc, aka Rawmeatcowboy. the owner of the site. Those tidbits weren’t there a few mins. ago.
Oh. I’m trying to figure out where they’re citing it from. Looks like TSS, but for some reason that’s refusing to load for me…
me too… it might be their server crashing due to traffic.
I didn’t think Sonic would win anything, that’s what I get for not believing. No one deserves it more than Sonic.
I guess, but it seems to do that a lot to me.
I mean, this shouldn’t be that surprising, especially if they’re not giving us a trailer or anything. I’d like to think Sega’s been working on *something* all this time. I’m almost hoping they’ve been spending all their time on this other mystery game.

It is good to see that both Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 and Sonic Colors won some awards. I read Nintendo Power and I’m looking forward to seeing this in the next issue. I knew Sonic had a great year in 2010 and I am sure that 2011 (which is the franchise’s 20th anniversary) will be even better for the blue blue. Well, hopefully. It will be interesting to see what the Anniversary game will be.
the evening’s still young, let’s see what happens over the next few hours.
Finally loaded. Looks like TSS is sourcing this board:

well, now that its out there, i wouldent expect its reveal to be far behind.
Seriously is there is anytime better to announce Sonic Colors HD? comeon SEGA dont tell me you wouldnt port the best Sonic game since the 16 bit era!?
In the story that just went up now, we’re crediting the Brazilian site Sonic Zone (which was the first to pick it up) and the Sega forums. Move the discussion over to that story, please.
Though I’ve written something on it, I don’t really consider this earth shattering, nor do I consider this a formal unveiling of Episode II. I will give Ken credit, however, for having a more open dialogue with fans, so much so as to run under the radar with all of this for almost 3 weeks.

But I’m pretty sure Sonic 4 DID NOT win the Reader’s Choice award, I could’ve sworn as the SEGA forums point out that it didn’t win.
Haru: A scan went up. It won in that category.

I love Sonic and all, but neither one of those titles should have won. Galaxy 2, Epic Yarn, Epic Mikey, or Monster Hunter should have taken that, easily. And Sonic 4, while not quite abysmal, is far from award worthy.
yes! Yes!! YEs!!! YES!!!! I’m SOO glad Sonic Colors got an award and SMG2 didn’t get all of them, lol. I hope DKCR got an award too
Edits for relevance now, Tristan? THANK GOD!
Eh, from a technical standpoint, Colors should definitely win for graphics, although I will say Galaxy 2 is easier on my eyes. I am unhappy it didn’t win for best soundtrack, though. Sonic 4 beating out Mega Man 10, however? Bull. Shit. Especially considering this came from the READERS, I have no idea how it won.
Sorry for being irrelevant, but I promise not to say it again.
But I still hope for the best in the future of the Sonic series.
