Genesis Starts Here
Many who follow the Archie comics are wondering what’s in store for Sonic’s 20th anniversary to that end. Today, we got a first peek at it via Archie’s release, and from the looks of it, a complete series reboot–if only a temporary one–may be in the cards.
From the clear look of the cover, to the simplified plot point, the issue that coincides with the anniversary month, writer Ian Flynn is taking a back to basics approach to the comic, and it will surely leave many wondering what will happen in issue 225 to facilitate it. Five artists are on board for the issue, including Tracy Yardley and Patrick Spaziante, who also handles the cover art.
Check out the preview and the cover below.

Classic Sonic design blue watch.
I find it funny how Sonic’s appearance on the cover mixed the classic design with the modern ‘green eyes’ design.
Oh yes! I cannot wait for this (green eyes, black eyes does it really matter?) Tracey Yardley doing the art too, Im so happy I have a subscription!
Uh oh, green eyes. Look out, Spaz!

I don’t even read this comic and I know I need this.
Wow! Sonic the Hedgehog 1, Sonic Genesis seriously!!!! Memories are coming back to me
A complete series reboot would be the biggest way possible to alienate pretty much the whole fanbase. It’ll either be temporary, or the worst mistake ever made. Remember what happened when DC tried to “reboot” Superman? Worst drop on popularity the comic ever saw.
Why would they name a story arc after one of the worst ports in history?
I wonder if the anniversary game will be titled “Sonic: Genesis” as well? I know there’s not alot of info supporting that fact, but I’m just wondering how this will tie into Sonic’s 20th Anniversary. I know it’s an obvious reference to the classic genesis games, but does that mean they’re just rebooting the comic and not the games? Or does it mean the comic will start following the storyline given in Sonic 4 and pretend the last several years never happened? I don’t have a clue. So far the only real information we’ve been given on the 20th Anniversary have been hints that former composers are returning to do various renditions on songs they’ve done in the past. What ever SEGA is up to, they’re doing a pretty good job of keeping it under wraps (and knowing most of the fanbase maybe for good reason). I know it’ll drive me absolutely crazy figuring it out, but I also know SEGA will release info once the time’s right.
I sure hope they don’t
I really hope that the comic doesn’t become childish again, like in the era before Sonic Adventure.
this looks asome. i think we going to be adult all of us when sonic will run alot of years they might releasse a big game comes with a free comic that will be cool we grow up alot guys things change with alot of good memories.
I think Archie will explain this with the “alternate universe” trick that they’ve done for several of their videogame sneak peaks, like Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the Black Knight, and Sonic Colors (textboxes at the beginning of these stories state ‘In another place and another time…’).
The comics have been really awesome lately, so as weird as this looks, I’m sure they know what they’re doing and it’ll turn out great.
I like Archie’s jab at Sega Marketing in their description. lol
I got to see Tracy Yardley work on a page of this right before my eyes at WizardCon in Georgia.
I can’t wait for this comic. ♥
@Dr.Eggfang
It’s the original… Wait “Sonic Geneses” NO WERE DOOMED!
My money is on what Graymalkin suggested, an ‘Alternate Universe” Scenario, maybe even brought about by the new Death Egg. I don’t think it’ll last though, the established continuity is a bit too established at this point to abandon.
Unless of course they’re planning on pulling a “Crisis on Infinite Earths” move, in which case I’m dropping the comic like a hot potato.
The most likely explanation is some sort of alternate reality. Eggman attempts to defeat Sonic by rewriting reality and erasing much of the history, only to lose in the classic Genesis style anyway, reverting everything back to normal.
I guess we’ll find out.
Sonic looks fat, again.
I hope that they are not trying to make the comics more like the games.
Cool cover, is a shame thats is archie comic.
Go Archie!!! Pulling out the all the stops for the 20th anniversary. ” The most way past cool 20th anniversary celebration!”
I just hope they do this “Genesis” arc with all the Genesis era games, or at least up to S3&K
i think this could be like a zone swap like the other alternate reality’s zonic the zone cop was
talking about (SSS: #8).
I wouldn’t worry that Sonic The Hedgehog comics are going to change for good. Archie wouldn’t completely revamp the comic, it will only last a few issues. I think “Viking ZX” is pretty right on about the plot. Go EGGMAN!
I haven’t read the comic in years, but now I know that I need this!
Looks like they are going down the path they should have gone years ago with a what-if scenario: no retard Freedom Fighters present to hold Sonic back. Just Sonic alone. Locations: Christmas Island and South Island. JOY!
Also: JP box art cover version plz.
@VikingZX: because the whole fanbase still reads that awful comic. This is going to be the greatest thing to happen to the comic in YEARS.
@Rockman Zero: If the comic is is awful then who do so many people still read it? I for one enjoy the comic now and agree that a series reboot would only cause problems among fans
