Amid Several Fan Projects, Overwhelming Support for the Real Deal
Because of so much commotion over several Sonic fan movies of late, including Eddie’s Lebron’s current and Richard Kuta’s scrapped projects, we decided to take the poll in a different direction the past two weeks, asking if you would support an official Sonic movie.
The results of the latest TSSZ News @Issue poll indicate incredible support for Sega to sanction or outright produce such a thing. Out of 778 votes, 85 percent said they would support an official Sonic movie. Just fifteen percent indicated they would not.
A new poll is now available for you to vote on. You can discuss the results of this poll in the discussion below.

Dragonball Evolution.
That is all.
As long as they don’t sell the rights to a random outside company or try to make a live-action adaptation marketed at people outside the fanbase, we’re probably not gonna have that problem.
In regards to the new poll, what departures?

for a cgi movie to look as good as say, unleashed cgi cutscenes, it would take a good 2 years, you have to think about post production and all that before even thinking about starting. A video game has a lot of space with no words to fill in, it would take time. It could be done of corse, but sega would end up not making a sonic game for a bit to make a sonic movie, would you be ok with that? Or they could hand it over to someone else and they keep an eye on it. If you wanted the sega team to handle this, thats like asking 20 questions at the same time.
I’d like to see it… despite the fact I know it would fail for my demographic group…
@krazeeKidd102
What? You think it’s going to be like that? SEGA would just end up making the movie cgi and make it as good as the 06 and/or SU cinematics.
Pixar. Enough said. Family, Kids, Adults, Humor, Action, and Good movie.
Well, to be fair, there IS an official Sonic movie: The OVA from 1997. But regardless, so long as it doesn’t have a terrible plot, and is CGI as opposed to live action, I think I’d be alright. It’d go nice with the Uncharted and Devil May Cry movies in production right now.
Personally I think it would be best is they made CGI movies faithly based on the Sonic Adventure games as they had the best plots of all the Sonic games, just improve the dialogue a bit and possibly fill in some of the plot holes.
Eggfang: Fabian Doehla, who was a PR liaison for a lot of the mainstream outlets, is also leaving.

This is officially the most uninteresting poll I’ve ever seen on this site, even MORESO due to the fact that it references NOBODY IMPORTANT.
ChaoticFox: We could always do another Sonic 4 Physics poll.
-T
Get Marza Animation Planet on it. They’ve done the CGI for recent Sonic games from Shadow the Hedgehog onward, along with the upcoming Captain Harlock film. If the intro for Unleashed and Night of the Werehog are any indication there’s the potential for an awesome Sonic film.
I would welcome an official Sonic film, but I’m afraid at this point it would just end up like “Night of the Werehog.” Although, I would like to see Pixar’s interpretation of the series even though that would never happen…
I’d love to see what Dreamworks Animation could do with it. If anyone’s seen Megamind, Kung fu panda, or How to train your dragon, you’ll know the action scenes in those movies are fantastic. A high speed chase sequence with Sonic could amazing if done right.
@Tristan
Never can get enough physics!
But seriously, I just don’t see how you could possibly make a big deal over community managers and “PR liasons” and spin it into some sort of omen regarding Sonic’s 20th. I think that’s trying wayyyyyy too hard. It’s not like any core or well-known/loved members of Sonic Team itself are leaving, to the best of my knowledge.
@Chaotixfox
Took the words right out of mouth! I don’t the point of this poll at all unless Tristan knows somehing we don’t.
I remember as a kid back in the 90s, whenever I went to the movies, I was always hoping to see a preview for a Sonic movie. Obviously, I always left disappointed. (Which, in retrospect, was probably a good thing. If a Sonic movie was made back then, there’s a strong chance it would have been SatAM-related, something i’m not really a fan of.)
I want to see Sonic on the big-screen someday, but the idea also worries me. There’s SO many ways Hollywood can screw up a big-screen adaptation of Sonic. Take the recent trailer for the Smurfs movie, for example..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhBpgqXwrt8
A live-action CGI combo of Sonic would be an abomination. (Eddie’s fan-film may be the only exception. I don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see..) There’s also the possibility Hollywood could make the movie really childish, with miscast celebrity voiceovers and pop-culture references out the wazoo.
I don’t think Hollywood really “gets” Sonic. He’s a kids character, so to them, there’s no real need to fill it with action or a good dramatic story. Put in a few fart jokes and some slapstick, don’t put the characters in any real danger, end with a Dreamworks-style dance party. Get the Black Eyed Peas to do a song on the soundtrack. Rake in the monies.
I think the only way to do Sonic right on the big-screen is to have someone who is a fan of the franchise and knows it inside and out to handle it. (Not Sonmanic though..)
Either that, or Sonic Team themselves. But then again, they gave us Sonic X, so I don’t think even they can be trusted with a Sonic movie.
Didn’t Sega said something about a movie from the people who created Night of the Werehog?
No, just no.
An official Sonic movie would be a bad idea. I would not want to see it made, and besides, it is not going to happen. Reasons why:
1. There is already a Sonic movie made. It is an anime OVA titled Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie. Look it up.
2. The problem would be that some corporate giant such as Disney would get their greedy hands on the Sonic franchise to make a film based on it, and I do not want that to happen. That would be heinous if it were to happen.
3. No one wants to see celebrities involved with the series. Hey, I’m not offending anyone, but it doesn’t seem right for Sonic no matter what people think otherwise (I have problems with the idea of Disney actors voicing Sonic characters). Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game icon, not some popular culture icon nor cartoon icon that most people think he is nowadays.
4. Movie adaptions of video game franchises normally don’t do too well in the box office, and since the Sonic games themselves have been criticized far too much by reviewers lately, it is not a good idea to adapt the series into a Hollywood film.
5. There are other video games that are more deserving for a big-screen movie adaption then Sonic will ever have.
FOR THE RECORD!!!
Everyone seems to be forgetting the Night of the Werehog short film. Wasn’t it said that that short film was made with the help of pixar… (or at least people from pixar)
So i’m pretty sure Sega could handle making a feature length film without messing it up.
If Sonic Team did a Sonic movie internally it would probably end up being clutters with all their stupid characters. I’d much rather see something with just Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Robotnik and maybe just two or three other characters. I also wouldn’t be against Satam or Archie based story.
It’s weird to me that so many people automatically assume that if a movie were to be made, it would be handled by “Hollywood” and full creative control would be given to random strangers to the series and the parent company. The words “official Sonic movie” make me think of something Sega-produced, not just licensed.
Myst makes a great point about Sonic X though, lol.
Did anyone here see Rango? (It’s all about Rattle Snake Jake.) I’d have faith in a Sonic movie just because of that. That’s so far my favorite movie this year, I think The Adjustment Bureau might unseat it though.
I thought Night of the Werehog was cute and funny. Definitely showed potential, though I wasn’t too fond of the lazy ending. I’d be cautiously open to the idea of a real movie as long as it didn’t depart too far from the games, or distract from making the games.
Have to agree with ChaoticFox. There’s absolutely no reason why, in order to be ‘official’, Hollywood would have to make it. Another annoying assumption is that the movie would feature voice actors other than the current ones. Unless it really is produced by Hollywood, I doubt SEGA would hire different actors.
@Vulpine
What’re you talking about? Disney voice actors are legendary. I’ve yet to see a Disney film with bad voice acting. And the entire assumption that Disney may handle a Sonic movie is laughable. SEGA themselves have shown that they’re quite capable of great animation and aethistics on their own.
I don”t think the OVA quite qualifies as a movie. It was never considered as such and its total runtime is less than an hour. It’s as much of a movie as Mewtwo Returns or Negima! Spring/Summer specials are.
But I have faith that SEGA can produce a very visually appealing movie with awesome soundtrack.
@ Vulpine
The Sonic OVA was never in theaters. So in my opinion, it doesn’t really count as a true Sonic movie. To me, a movie isn’t really a “movie” unless you’re able to see it on the big-screen.
@vulpine i kinda agree on the voice acting part lol. can’t i just hear roger craig smith again so i get use to it :s? if they use another voice actor often now then i will never get use to all those voices lawl.
amy + ashley tisdale= HERP DERP DERP.
but i still want a sonic movie with modern sonic nao :3. the only problems are what vulpine just said about other random huge companies using sonic for….stuff
The fact remains that a Sonic movie unfortunately wouldn’t be 2D animation like the Sonic OVA was, it would be CGI one way or another. I would think that if Sega were to make a movie, the graphics would easily deliver, but it’s the story everyone is worried about.
I would be afraid that our favorite Hedgehog would be subjected to a “Kiddy Friendly” storyline, ala Sonic Heroes. Something cute with no true danger, shitty banter, and lots of references to the “Power of Teamwork/Love/Friendship/Believing in Yourself/ETC.”{
Sonic Colours was their call to the younger audience, while us older fans got Sonic 4. The logic remains, the kids got Sonic X, so we should have a slightly more mature Sonic Movie. Not “gritty”, just a little darker, realistic danger, Maniacal Robotnik, and a little blood.
If anybody thinks I’m wrong, please feel free to comment back. I’d like the opinions of others too.
-Storm
@ Storm,
I agree with what you said about making Robotnik/Eggman maniacal. He’s become a massive pansy in recent games. I can’t take him seriously as a villain anymore. He poses no real threat. Even his own creations mock him.
SA2 was the best portrayal of the character. The game opened with him entering a military base, guns ablazing, cackling like a madman. (No silly laser boops like in Sonic X. Real bullets were fired!) And he didn’t rely on his robots in that scene. He didn’t even have backup. He did the job solo.
Later on, he blew up a military base, pointed a gun at Amy’s head, and throughout Crazy Gadget, you could hear him telling Sonic he was going to KILL Amy. Not kidnap, or hold for ransom. Literally kill her. He also nearly succeeded in killing Sonic. We even got to see some seriousness from Robotnik/Eggman during the ending when he looked back on his childhood. You could hear some sadness in his voice. It was a rare moment inwhich he wasn’t yelling about how he was going to find all the Chaos Emeralds, or screaming about how much he hates Sonic. For once, he was being calm and serious. I liked that little moment, even if it was ruined by Tails yelling “DURRR WE ALL DID TOGETHERRRR”
But Sonic Team didn’t forget Robotnik/Eggman’s goofiness either. He still threw a tantrum at one point, and during that newscast he could be seen scratching his butt. Sonic Team seems to have forgotten Robotnik/Eggman is supposed to be both goofy AND evil. Now it just seems like he’s 100% goofy, without any evil whatsoever. Even though he did blow up a planet in Unleashed, I still thought he was absolutely pathetic in that game. He spent the entirety of the game being mocked by his helper robot. Even the villagers in Mazuri who Eggman was supposed to be intimidating, just threw a rock at him and showed no fear whatsoever. Then there’s the scene where Dark Gaia kicked Eggman’s arse, and it ended with him again, being mocked by his helper robot and throwing a fit like a child. Completely pathetic. They need to interject some evil into Robotnik/Eggman again. I would hate for a Sonic movie to feature a potrayal similar to Unleashed.
I dunno about blood in the movie though. That seems a little much.
@ Storm and Myst:
If you’ve seen the original uncut Japanese version of Sonic X, you’d know it’s considerably more mature than its English Dub as 4Kids Entertainment watered it down a lot to make it more appropriate for American audiences (i.e. replacing gunshot sound effects with lasers, removal of swearing, alcohol, smoking, sexual situations, the removal or watering down of death, etc., and they also changed the original music with crap generic music; “Live and Learn” by Crush 40 plays in Episode 38 in Japanese, for example).
Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfLsZK4pgpI&list=SL
It might be region locked to the U.S.; I’m not sure.
I agree with what’s been said about Robotnik, though I don’t know how “dark” a Sonic movie’s storyline would have to be. I think if you made Robotnik evil enough, the plot would take care of itself. If there’s one thing that’s become a pretty pathetic joke in the Sonic franchise it’s been Sonic Team trying WAY too hard for a serious/epic/dark plotline.
Sonic is meant to be goofy and light. It’s a G-rated “for everyone” kind of series, and it always will be. Truth is, most of us LIKE it because it’s so happy and innocent. Asking Sega to cater Sonic toward an older crowd is like asking Pampers to make you a bigger diaper.
Well, I still don’t care what you people think: I don’t want a big-screen Sonic movie to be made. Why? If it’s made then random huge corporations will milk Sonic to death, which will ruin Sonic, and we don’t need any more of that. Besides, it is not going to happen. Sonic is better off as a SEGA video game series instead of a big-budget Hollywood film anyway.
I also can’t imagine Sonic being at top of the box office, either (Seeing that overrated piece of garbage that everyone calls “The Lion King” outgrossing most other films is bad enough, and we don’t want Sonic getting any attention from the wrong people just because of a big-budget Sonic movie is at top of the charts).
