But you might want to wait…
After more than a month of “it’s coming this weekend” promises from Hez, Sonic Classic has finally released. Clocking in at a hefty 136mb, the game represents one of the largest, most feature-complete fangame releases, standing next to SFG titans like Sonic Robo-Blast 2 and Jamie Bailey’s Sonic Time Attacked. With eight mammoth zones, a variety of bonus stages, tons of secrets, and as always, seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic Classic is of roughly the same size and length you’d get out of a real, official Sonic game.
You may want to hold off, though. Hez has stated plans are already in the works for an updated “REV 01″ release of Sonic Classic sometime in the future, and reports are coming in from the official Sonic Retro IRC channel #fangames of numerous hiccups, including display problems and the game sometimes refusing to save its progress. For those of you who want to brave these bugs anyway, hit up the release thread at Sonic Retro, and be sure to let Hez know of any abnormalities you might encounter.

i cannot access the page, maybe because im not a full member of sonic retro. can someone post the download link pls? o:

That’s the one with music.
Downloading this now, Retro gave mixed reviews of it, but I’ll take it with a grain of salt til I actually play it.

Weird – I don’t have to be logged in to access the thread.
Looks like what Sonic 4 should’ve been.
Yeah okay, been playing for a while now and…it’s alright, I guess.
It still has a LOT of bugs that I’ve noticed, and the physics seem kinda floaty to me. Fullscreen is highly recommended for this game, it gives me the smoothest framerate that way. The level design is nice, and the music is decent. The special stages are directly taken from Sonic Chaos for the Game Gear, for better or for worse. The time limits on some of the special stages seem a little too restrictive, but once you’ve played through them a few times and know what to do, they’re not so bad. Still kinda bullshit though.
For now, I’ve given the game a rest, due to so many glitches and general frustration. Here’s hoping Hez’ll iron some bugs out in the future.
@Eee
For the record, how many games can Sonic 4 possibly look like? I’m just asking.
I’ve played through up until like the 4th level. It’s pretty good, but for some reason the save states aren’t working, and there are a lot of bugs to be worked out.
Guess all those beta testers weren’t sending in any feedback, what a damn shame.
@krush96
Anything that isn’t a remake of Sonic 1 and 2.
@Krush96
I know right!!!
I can see myself getting lost in there. A lot.
The game is fun, but it’s still too broken. I can’t get past Aqua Arena since the “dashpads” from Hydrocity always get me and, as they don’t work properly, freeze Sonic forever.
everytime i collect rings the game lags
And now Sonic Classic just got unwinnable. I have been sent to Death Egg zone, but only the background appears and i can’t do anything. This happens even if i restart the game.
There’s also a weird ‘glitch’ in the fourth Special Stage, where if you take the lowest route near the end of the level, and keep running right, you’ll eventually trigger an off-screen sign post and…clear the Act you were currently in before you entered the Special Stage?
…huh. Yeeaaah, might wanna fix that. I’ve been playing it a bit more and it’s still seems pretty broken. I think Hez probably jumped the gun when he released this, for sure.
SEGA should definitly make this kind of game again^^
I’ve “Beaten” this game. And by beaten, I mean, gotten to Death Egg Zone where all you see is space.
I don’t quite understand all of the gripe for the Level Design… I felt each level had it’s own kind of flow: Gigopolous was very curved, while Dusty Dunes was very blocky. Robot Rave can easily be ran through, avoiding a majority of the stage, while Aqua Arena was a some-what underwater maze.
The music choices where pretty good. Maybe that’s just because I happen to like the remixes Hez chose….my only 2 gripes with the music:
1. The volume of the songs aren’t leveled, so you’ll hear one song and than the next will be so loaned you can barely hear the sound effects.
2. Holly crap, the music takes up way too much space. If he could have lowered the bit rate, or, heck, used ogg files, the filesize would be a billion times smaller. I don’t know if there’s any way to support using oggs in MMF though.
The graphics are great! I think it’s one of the main reason this fame feels so good… It looks like a Sonic game.
Now here is where the game falls apart the most… The Gameplay. Not to say the engine is bad per say… (it’s actually pretty good, if you ask me…) but there are so many glitches that this sometimes feels like a mess of a game. The Checkpoint bonus stages don’t work, the revving arms in Aqua Arena or whatever often don’t work, the non-working final stage, the fidgety fire shield…. For some, it is too much to bare, but for some people like me, you can look past those flaws and see the enjoyable game.
As far as replayability is concerned, there’s 4 different ways to beat the game, not including possible hidden characters, theres 100 challenges and there’s ghost racing. I’d say there’s TONS of replayability there.
As for bugs, at least one beta tester has said that he reported the same bugs multiple times, only for nothing to happen. Hex has already stated that work is already underway on Rev01, so hopefully he will get to some of these issues by than.

And could you remove my last post, accidentally put my email in the name field, would prefer for that not to stay public for too long. Thanks.
Pffft. At least Sonic 4 was playable.
