THURSDAY UPDATE: Source of Leaks Allegedly Tracked Down; Sega: “No Comment”
Coming from the department of “this looks legitimate to me but we’ll post it as a rumor to stay on the side of caution” is a news tip from GhostSeven, who has provided us with box art scans from a couple of upcoming Sega games:
Both images call back to an October story we posted in conjunction with Sonic Paradise regarding Izaskun Urretabizkaia’s comments on a game then-titled “Sonic Anniversary” and a new Mario & Sonic game focused on the 2012 London Summer Olympics. Both box art shots apparently emerged from a Brazilian gaming website called gameLib, though the specific details of how and where they came from are not readily apparent as they aren’t attached to any visible news story.
Not to get all “I have seen quite a few shops in my time and I can tell by the pixels” on you, but by my eyes, both images look pretty legitimate, and bear no immediately obvious hallmarks of being tampered with. “CAPA NÃO DEFINITIVA” is Portuguese, and translates to “COVER NOT FINAL”.
Outside of confirming the new Mario & Sonic game set for release this year, this connects the dots from Sega’s untitled Facebook teaser to the name “Sonic Generations“, a connection many had assumed but was never set in stone.
TRISTAN UPDATE: For those doubting the authenticity of the story, the Brazil based Power Sonic actually followed up with our tipster, and they explain the box art surfaced via Brazilian based distributor MC Games, who first received the creative. MC Games does distribute some Sega games in Brazil, and according to the Power Sonic report, it appears someone within the company gave it to GameLib. The box art was intended to promote pre-release activity.
In their coverage, CVG reached out to Sega for comment, to which a firm “no comment” was given.
Depending on how this goes, this may be subject to our Sensitivity Rule.

That CGI render of Classic Sonic is pretty damned sweet – I hope that some of these art assets do eventually become finalised…
… -__-
Another stupid, good for nothing Mario and Sonic sports game? Wasn’t the new Mario and Sonic game supposed to be a “nice surprise” or something?
Well, on the bright side, the Generations artwork looks pretty sick.
Wish they would figure out how to pull off the top spine in 3D at that angle, otherwise this is a great recreation of the iconic pose of classic Sonic.
London Olympics? FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I just hope theres a STORY this time, on the Wii one and not a fustraiting DS one. Who knows, maybe theres platforming inside of the game.
Ugh. Cut the Olympics, Sega. No one wants it.
Well, then again…
Texture on the pictures to show they have been scanned? huh…
Wow, I can literally say i love classic and current sonic equally, especially next to each other in comparison. Makes me think of all the good times from start to finish, AMD I DONT WANNA HEAR IT, I love all the sonic games, and by games, i mean canon games. Sonic riders and mario olympics… meh… cool music tho
Cover almost final.
Id also like to say, i dont know how legit that picture could be, I feel like the classic sonic looks a bit odd. Im not feeling 100% that that is a cgi render, but in fact good photoshoping? I DONT KNOW, some just feels off about it. But then again, people need mockups to start off box art so it could have been a quick render to look different? time will tell.
That Sonic Generations box art is amazing, a day one buy for me. But another olympics game? GODAMMIT!!!
Seriously wafflefactory?
People said the same shit about Black Knight.
There’s something that looks very wrong about that Generations artwork, though the problem is proving it to be Photoshopped or not would require analyzing it pixel-by-pixel, and I’m sure that somebody else is going to do so and post their findings before I even get around to it, so I won’t bother this time. XD
So…sick…of these Olympic games.
@Dr.Eggfang
If they made it look like the art from that angle, I’d be willing to bet that it would look funky from the side. They probably chose the lesser of two evils.
So Classic Sonic is flipping us off and we also get get a boring 2012 Olympics cover.
Sorry I typed get twice
Gah, hoping it would be a fighting game!
A little disappointing, but oh well, it’s not the main draw this year anyway. The “Generations” cover – or at least the cover at the moment – looks pretty darn nifty.
That is to say it’s all legitimate of course.
Unknownlight: Well, because it did originate here, I’m sure someone somewhere will try and dispute it soon enough, no matter how much effort it takes. =)

when I look at Generations artwork I realize how awesome Modern Sonic looks compared to Classic Sonic, He looks more confident. Don’t get me wrong I I like Classic Sonic too.
I still think that they still need to tweak Classic Sonic’s face a bit. since it looks a bit… flat, rather than round. Also, I noticed that he’s trying to emulate US Sonic rather than Japan Sonic (compare the original box arts to know what I mean). Interesting leak however.
Are ya kidding me?! London 2012 Olympic Games? I was hoping for something new. If this is the only game thats going on Wii on Sonics 20th Anniversary Im not definetely buying it. I dont have money to buy Xbox 360 or PS3 so I will keep on hoping that there will be an awesome Sonic game on Wii.
I don’t think this is legit…and if it is, thankfully it’s not the final product….because Modern Sonic TOWERS over Classic Sonic in the box art and in the Teaser they both looked roughly about the same height….not exactly but similar….
So….someone has to be lying here…..SEGA’S Teaser…or this “Leaked” Boxart…..
……CURSE YOU SEGA! CAN’T YOU DO ANYTHING RIGHT! lol…nah not today….I just don’t expect this to be the final box art product because….it looks a little….too bland….and too plain to be the 20TH ANNIVERSARY SONIC GAME!, although to be fair I cannot really judge a COVER of a game….. *insert stereotypical “Cover of Book” line here*, because the cover shouldn’t really matter….as long as the game is awesome…everything else is just frosting on the cake….well to me anyways…..
I hope that box of masatog 3 would be fake, and the real name was “Mario an Sonic Adventure” .
I dont care about the Mario&Sonic game, all my attention goes to Generations. Holly Sh**t SEGA! Every news of Generations make me cm on my Panths! YEAH!
C&D in 5, 4, 3…
I wouldn’t put it past them, but if they do, it by default confirms the third M&S, so…

Seeing as the cat is out of the bag, i’d expect formal announcements of these 2 titles and Sonic 4 episode 2 very soon.
Also, you guys should head over to sega forums. Some idiots are talking about Sonic Generations was made for “HarDcore” gamers. LOL!!!
Wasn’t there a post for a Mario & Sonic 3 not being sports related??? Didn’t Wentos say it wasn’t going to be a sports related game?? That Mario & Sonic box art is FAKE!
OK, something doesn’t add up about the Generations scan-why is classic Sonic is WAY SHORTER than modern Sonic, even though that in the trailer is shows about that classic Sonic is ALMOST the same height? Additionally, there is no sky in the background of Green Hill Zone, and the text “Generations” is pretty basic.
And *facepalm* at the 2012 Olympic Winter Games scan. If the 3rd Mario and Sonic game really is YET another Olympic party game……WTF Sega and Nintendo. Both are you are eager to pull throwbacks to classic games, yet you still refuse to make a crossover platformer?
And last, but not least-why is there no 20th Anniversary logo on either scans? I know this is sort of a nitpick, especially considering that these box arts aren’t final, but still……
Nice, but I was hoping for a different Wii game …Sonic Adventure 3…
I’m pretty sure when I was a little kid back in the 90s I wasn’t hoping “Boy, I hope Mario and Sonic cross over in a game one day… Hope it’s a minigame sports title!”
Enough with the filler dammit, we want a crossover platformer.
Generations art looks good, though.
Are you people blind? The height differences of the two in the video was about what you see here, you just didn’t see it that well when it came to them running side by side.
But if that is even PROMO artwork of what is to be the final picture…holy fuck.
That’s….god. I got chills down my spine.
…………………could that be a pun?
in my opinion they probably will drop 360 on the final version since they announced and now they are changing their mind or alter the attire game because it will run out of space on 2 layer dvd, your talking about a huge game will not fit on 360 itself maybe half or without 3D data, so the game is exclusive to ps3 not just the hd graphics but data size with 2D and 3D games remade from 1 to 4 yes it might include sonic 4 final episodes and also more characters, so i am not sure it will or not include current games remake from the dreamcast era, so time will tell
I was hoping M&S would not be a sports game ~___~
I like the Generations artwork though.
Cloverdox took the words right from my mouth.
I was hoping for anything that wasn’t sport related, even a party game.
The pixel-by-pixel guys have spoken:
It looks like it’s real.
Either the Generations box art is a fake or to the very least not the finished version. Why? No Sonic logo. It just says . . . Generations. ‘ ___ ‘
@Unknownlight:
Didn’t trust my analysis?
You people DO realize that it can be fake WITHOUT photoshopping right? Maybe they used a different program. Maybe they’re artists. Maybe they have ripped models or created ones based on the ones we’ve seen and are good at it. It’s possible they actually just MAKE the picture really good, thus not being able to tell it’s fake by looking at it, but merely but an official statement.
I don’t think it’s fake but I’ll admit it could be.
I like both designs equally as both are cheesy and have nothing to offer but are “good enough” to accept. Tho I don’t like Classic Sonic in this image as much as Modern Sonic. Not because Modern Sonic looks better as a design but because Classic Sonic wasn’t exectuted AS well as Modern Sonic in this image. His face is a bit TOO fat. lol But nonetheless, they do both still look good, just not as good as they could.
Also, they made Classic Sonic awfully short. This proves I was right when I said SEGA was merely making the characters portrayed the way the fans see them.
Example: Knuckles used to be a lot calmer and smarter but because he was tricked (Reasonably) twice and is serious about his duty to the Master Emerald, people saw it as him being a tough hot-head he was too simple-minded to avoid being tricked “all the time”. Then they started to portray him in such manner.
Well this is the same. People assume Sonic got “taller” when he merely just got a a more slinder appearing design, and people though Classic Sonic hat a pot-belly when it was merely more rounded. This probably because of the artwork but there’s so many artwork that varies in style. In-game Classic Sonic never looked like this.
But lastly, SatAM was made during the Classic era and even in SatAM Sonic says he’s 3 foot 4 give or take an inch. Sonic is CURRENTLY 3 foot 3. In SatAM “give or take an inch” probably means like 3 ft 3 1/2 or something. Even if he DID mean 3’4, that’d make Modern Sonic SLIGHTLY SHORTER than Classic, but we can assume he means the same height. So they should be the same height, yet SEGA is ignoring that. This will further confuse fans.
I don’t mind, I just think it’s funny. xD
Well, if these ARE legit (And they do look very legit, unless ,as above comments say, there are really talented people out there) then we can be sure that the loss of colour isn’t going to be a gameplay gimmick, since Green Hill’s completely coloured in this background.
My opinion on the faded track and massive lack of colour is they’re trying to give the impression that this game will be extremely linear, since even on the beginning cliff there’s only a small part of it coloured, the only part Sonic actually travels on/over. Either that or they’re demonstrating what a 2D level would be like in a 3D view, not being able to move left or right.
But anyway, I’m in love with the renders
Nintendo & Sega Lied to us
FUCK YOU OLYMPIC GAMES
@FoxBoy
If it’s a fake, it’s one of the most realistic-looking fakes I’ve seen. For somebody to create this fake, they would have to have high-detail 3D models of of both Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic. And not just high-detail 3D models, but high-detail 3D models that match the identical style and proportions of characters present in the trailer released last week. There aren’t many people with the resources to hoax something that well so quickly. There aren’t any signs of airbrushing, either, so that’s out. The dithering is consistent with an image that was scanned in from an outside source and doesn’t appear to be “fake”.
None of this would be solved by using a different program, either.
mmm, could it be that the Olympic one is fake and the Generations 1 is real, but just an unfinished box art?
I say this because of that statement 1-2 months ago about the next M&S not beeing a sport related game but something unique.
I don’t know what to say, I just hope to see a M&S fighting game.
Generations is my main focus game though…this thing is very thrilling
The thing is, the ‘Olympic games’ have proven to be very popular family and party games. I know that I have had a lot of fun at parties, with Mario and Sonic, so maybe that’s what SEGA is thinking. But then again, you would of thought that they would have come up with a different idea as to party games. It’s not like I’m saying that we need a crossover game that has a storyline like a really bad fanfiction, but I’m saying we need something, well, fresh!
Remember that leaked picture of Eggman in a giant robot back in 2008?
Sure was a cleaver photoshop that totally wasn’t an official screenshot for Unleashed.
It was quite possibly the best fan art I’d ever seen.
Let me put this way: The Generations box art doesn’t even have the word ‘Sonic’ on it. I don’t now about you, but that seems extremely suspicious to me.
what, no 20th anniversary logo???
There is a huge height difference between the two. Their color is even different? In the trailer, Sonic is very slightly darker than Classic Sonic but here, there is a huge difference in color. The Classic Sonic picture looks like a 3D version of the the Sonic 1991 pack as well. It looks way too much like the Classic Sonic is meant to be a younger form of Sonic despite the fact that Sonic was always made a teenager since the first game.
lets just all remember that if this is real(which i think it isn’t) it says clearly says cover not final meaning sega could fix the color of the sonics, the height and the background. the title of course i think is a definant change.
