Don’t Read Too Much Into Lopsided Results
Remember, both Sonics are in the trailer for what we believe to be Sonic Generations released last week. So why was there a fuss over a poll Sega held on its Facebook page asking fans to choose between the blue blur’s modern or classic rendition?
Most obvious, the current results–showing almost three and a half times more votes for Classic Sonic as of this article’s publication–demonstrate a continued desire to see a true return to original form for the hedgehog from the franchise’s oldest fans. But so much of it has been made elsewhere that while most were opining on the box art prototypes we first revealed to the world, Sega took to Twitter Thursday to clear the air.
“(The) Facebook poll is just for fun,” the statement said. “We wanted to try the new poll functionality and give our million+ fans a chance to have fun too.”
The bottom line: Everyone calm down.

@Andre
“Both groups got excited when Classic Sonic appeared on the screen…”
Oh please. I didn’t care for Sonic’s character model back when Sonic 4 was revealed, and I certaintly don’t care for it now.
The only reason people are even getting so controversal over this is because ANYTHING that has any similarity to the classic Sonic games (including the 2D plane in general) is apparently automatically good with no question. As for me, I’m still waiting for the gameplay trailer before I get excited about anything.
@krazeeKidd102
Of course it’s entirely possible… and I’d say even expected that Sega will somehow always manage to screw things up in the end. But yes, of course people get excited when they see classic Sonic, and with reason. Not only does it ignite that emotional spark that was planted in our hearts with the Genesis classic trilogy, it also signals that Sega may be finally listening to the demands of the fans.
That you choose to be indifferent about it is a personal choice and I won’t fight you over that. But I was happy to read the comments of the people voting for the classic Sonic on the Facebook poll. Speaks volumes of how an emotional impression made early in your childhood can be carried and cherished throughout your adult life.
If you’d like a good read, pick Clotaire Rapaille’s “The Culture Code”. Maybe you can even download it somewhere. Then you’ll understand why Sonic games are much more than physics, mechanics and gameplay, and why the design of the character is so important to so many people (at LEAST 12000+ on Facebook alone).
@ Andre
I see what you mean kinda. I liked most of Link’s designs except for maybe the one from the first two games (Legend of Zelda and Adventures of Link). I also never really had a problem with Sonic’s redesign either. Also, what do you mean exactly by making him look like a caricature? Link’s different designs had less in common with each other than Classic and Modern Sonic.
@chaos_controller
Sonic’s older look and newer look, look almost exactly the same, sometimes they are so identical that I cannot even tell the difference. I don’t understand why a fat belly, and eye color really make a game good? I mean does every single sonic game have to be nastolgic? I am going to say this again I like the older sonic games as well as some of the 3D ones, but I don’t see much a difference, I mean sonic is running high speed, jumping on springs, swinging on ziplines, going in loops, ever since the first sonic game. All sega needs to do is fix the gameplay. Also Mario was shorter with black eyes, and is now taller with blue eye color. Seems like little things sonic fans specifically like to pick on that are not important. It figures a cool character gets the crap from people. If sonic was real it would be funny to see him give the finger to the nitpickers LOL
@krazeekidd102 I agree with you.
@Andre Also its the fact of nastalgia, everything has to be from their childhood to make it better, but unfortunatly there is other people that live in this world. just because they were born with the first sonic games, that doesn’t make them the boss of the whole series telling people they’re idiots if they prefer new sonic. thats flaming and bashing. and like I said before, the two models look identical, and I am not against the old sonic games, since I like them. If they use the classic model in future sonic games, it really doesn’t matter to me. But I am for sonic progressing like mario is, and becoming futuristic. Sonic colors was a good examble of a truely modern day sonic game. Also if sega listens to the older fans wanting 16-bit genesis back, its eventually gonna get boring if they make the same thing over and over again, I mean do they want 16-bit in 2020? They can’t make every single game back to the 90s. Also sonic 4 felt just like the genesis, and people complained about that. So it really comes down to that the fans are being ignorant bitches, sorry to sound harsh there, but we see that, and so does the non sonic fans. We are not crazy, we see that they bitch about everything not being exatcly like the genesis or the voice acting is not right, which is true, but not a big deal to bitch about, maybe to talk about, but not to bitch. Classic character models have nothing to do with being a good game. being shorter Fatter, having black eyes, doesn’t make it automatically the best game ever. I =’m gonna say this once more. “It is about gameplay” and the fans need to grow up and realise that they sound like bitches that fricking whine about stupid crap that is not important and not life threatening.
i kind of have to agree on andre’s point on character design. while i don’t believe it can either make or break a game it can certainly can effect a persons nostalgia towards a game and view on the company’s attention towards their consumers. or another reason being if the game stunk a character design you don’t like wouldn’t help the case. in some cases yes it can sway a persons purchase of the game. for example the new spyro for that new game looks HORRIBLE!(i literally thought spyro was a goblin) i grew up loving the old spyro and activision completely changing him does in fact make me question if activision cares about the old spyro players. it just feels uncomfortable getting used to something new like that. i can’t just accept spyro’s new look like that. anyway yes i voted for classic sonic mainly because it made me feel more comfortable playing a sonic game when i’m playing as something i always loved even if the game stinks.(not that i don’t like the new sonic). so is the design of a character important:yes in some ways. does it trump gameplay:no but it’s still a big part. also andre if you could summarize the culture codes relation to sonic that would be great.
also random question i’m working on a sonic game i hope sega will consider. the game will play similar to the adventure games. i don’t think it should be called adventure 3 though. it would have references to those games and others in the series. what do you think it should be called besides something with “adventure” in it?
So, I head that Classic Sonic being in the teaser was also just for the survey but wouldn’t be in the game. Is that true? =(
@sonicdudefan1996 Oh btw, about the Sonic title. It’s hard to think of something for a game similar to the Adventure series. What about Sonic Radical? XD
@foxboy
anything besides adventure 3 will be good.lol! trust me fans need to realize the title doesn’t determine the quality of the game.
Sonic crap! it’s the sonic game you’ve been waiting for!it’s really good! fanboys:it’s called sonic crap for a reason.( Game gets average of 9.0 on metacritic. only complaint is name.) fanboys:…..Wow we just got punked.LOL!
@sonicdudefan1996
Fans do realize that. I never understood where the idea they didn’t came from. No one said that about Sonic 4. In fact, some people who didn’t like Sonic 4 said it shouldn’t have even been titled Sonic 4.
A title doesn’t MAKE a game but it identifies it. When someone says they want a Sonic Adventure 3 they mean they want a Sonic Adventure 3. Not a game that’s just LIKE the Adventure series (Tho that’d be cool too), not a game merely CALLED Sonic Adventure 3. But a game that is called Sonic Adventure 3 and is worthy of the title. =)
I want SA3 as well. I don’t really mind that Sonic Gens isn’t SA3 and I expected it not to be. But I would like to see SA3 simply cuz:
1: ppl have been complaining that none of the games have been as good since SA2 anyways.
2: I’m interested in seeing a third part in the series to make it a trilogy like the original classics. Especially if we’re calling it Adventure “series”.
3: It’d be interesting to see that style again successfully.
4: Because they make new games all the time and SA3 would be a new game that I know would be fun at least to me (assuming they made a game that lived up to it’s name) And making other games besides SA3 doesn’t rule out SA3 also being made some day. The more good games the better. =)
5: I wanna do a proper spindash again. =w= lol
@foxboy
all i’m saying (well your right about all that) is that some fans won’t stop whining and complaining about a game not being SA3. hey what if the game surpassed the series in a attempt to create a adventure 3 and became it’s own series? that would be great and all but i’ve seen people on fourms and this sight who would curse a game because it’s not titled sa3 even though it brings that same feeling of story,sound but fixed “similar” gameplay. believe me i want sega to make a sa3 but not because of fans whining like what happened here in generations. and a great example of people hating on a game for no big reason is super smash(no megaman).
and fans also said that sonic 4 should have been called sonic rush 3. i bet it wouldn’t have gotten so much hate on that case. by the way how come they took off that newer post about the egg mobile toy thing and t-shirts?
couldnt be a page about sonic without paragraphs of nutty comments down below
@sonicdudedan1996
I’m not denying there are some fans who are making the rest of us who want an SA3 look bad. I’m just saying it’s not all black and white.
You know that Sonic Unleashed was made in an attempt to make SA3? I like Sonic Unleashed. And for a while so did the fan base til it slowely converted against it (I fear for this possible future happening to Sonic Colors XD) Speaking of Sonic Colors, same models and similar gameplay and music style. I consider Colors part of the same mini-series as Unleashed and I would probably consider this as being exactly what you said. An attempt to make SA3 creating another cool series instead.
BUT, I still want an SA3. Like I said. I’m not asking for SA3 to be in PLACE of another possibly cool game. But rather a cool game itself to be alongside whatever other cool games they make instead including what was made in a failed attempt at SA3 but became a successful game. (Heck, if they keep trying to make an SA3 but accidentally make other cool games I’m good with that too. xD)
And you know I actually agree with you. I want an SA3. And I am only now voicing that I want an SA3 because SEGA specifically said that they might make it if we show that we want it. (It’s always been known but not really emphasized on specifically). They’re basically saying “If you really want SA3, let us know.” So I’m doing that. BUT, I don’t agree with hating on a game like Sonic Generations just because one was too ignorant to pay attention and use common sense to realize expecting the anniversary game to be SA3 was ridiculous. The way I see it, if they make SA3 then I might get to play Sonic Generations AND SA3 someday rather than it being either or.
@foxboy
EXACTLY! that’s what i was trying to say. thank you or understanding and not thinking i was trying to say something else. but yeah i want to play sa3 and this i don’t want to choose one game. they both are games i would be interested to play. i really didn’t expect sa3 to be the anniversary game. also yeah sonic colors is a perfect example of what i meant! be happy with what you got a awesome game!(again i’m brining back the super smash no megaman rants.) if they want to take their time and find the right formula great! there’s no pressure. hey if sega postponed a few games to later im sure most fans would support sega.(mainly because of whats happened to games that were supposed to be sa3.)hey if they don’t make SA3 okay at least we get good sonic games.
i mean another great example is kingdom hearts 3. i REALLY want that game but it’s not here yet. well i still like most of the kh games square is making for us.(kh 3d looks so GOOD!) now kh 3d isn’t kh3 but it still looks great in it’s own way.
