Swedish Magazine May be Top of Slippery Slope
…Uh oh.
The latest issue of Swedish magazine Level, as transcribed by SSMB forumer Carbo, claims a tidbit coming for Sonic Generations that, for most would be insignificant, but for some would signal trouble not just for what it is, but what it means: hub worlds.
That did not come out of Takashi Iizuka’s mouth; he even admitted in the piece that “Sonic is not perfect.” The tidbit comes from a screenshot annotation that accompanies the piece. There is no scan but we assume it to be under the so-called interactive menu for Green Hill Zone, and translated, it says this:
The Adventure elements that have been around the later Sonic games haven’t disappeared completely. In between levels Sonic goes around in an open world looking for the next challenge.
When done right, hub worlds can add replay value and depth to a game. But many fans, especially the veteran crowd, still have the bad taste from the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog and, to a lesser extent, Sonic Unleashed in their mouths. Both, amid a myriad of other problems, included cumbersome hub world layouts.
We’re not saying this is bad, but if it’s means past mistakes haven’t been learned, it could be the sign of something bad. Or, something may have been lost in translation. To be clear, the full preview, which you can read at the link cited above, is glowing. But if not, the little things matter to some fans. Does this matter to you? Tell us below.

Hub towns? I don’t mind. 06 was indeed painful to get across and Unleashed was more pleasant because of how much smaller the towns were and how easy it was to get from point A to point B. I would have to say that Sonic Adventure still had the best hub towns.
I liked the Hubs in Unleashed, nuff said.
Yay
yes! that is what i’m trying to do in the game i want to make. make hubs a option. during your first playthrough you can just go through the story or if you are a 100 percent freak you can go through hub worlds and complete challenges or gain extra stuff. it’s not needed to complete the game but still is a nice touch. plus no humans. sega could do it right in my opinion by doing it this way. in other news who here thinks that Chao’s would be perfect for a green hill hub
i don’t think there was anything wrong with the hubs in Sonic Unleashed. They made sense, unlike in other sonic games.
but as James said, the hubs in 06 were WAY too big….. hopefully it won’t be anything like that o.O
@KeigoNiwa
i think he was talking about sonic unleashed wii.
@sonicdudefan1996
I DISAGREE XD
Flickies man, flickes would be perfect for a Green Hill hub
although, choas would be good for a more modern hub, like seaside hill/ocean palace hub :3
Well, as long as they don’t force you to collect something in order to open up new levels and the layouts of the hubs themselves aren’t cumbersome, I don’t see what’s the harm in having them.
I was hoping for hub worlds specially in a game like this. I would love running around in a hub world version of green hill and meet other Sonic characters for missions.
As long as the hubs are more exploratory/open areas like they were in SA, I’m actually excited for hub worlds, as I’ve been missing that adventure-esque element ever since they scrapped it on SA2… but if you start throwing in stupid-ass side-quests and forcing Sonic to move at walking speed (a la 06/Unleashed) – FUCK THAT.
Then again if they get this right, I think Sonic Team will say ” WE TOLD YOU THAT WE CAN MAKE A GREAT SONIC GAME!!!!!!!” and if they get the gameplay right.
So uh, TSSZ… Can you stop starting your articles with a judgement call?
I’m not going to go through all your coverage of Generations for examples, but you guys will start the article with a statement of disapproval. Claiming Iizuka doesn’t “get” the franchise he’s been working on for over a decade, deciding right off the bat that the colors writers returning is bad news, and that we’ll get a Sonic backstory, and now this?
You’re jumping to conclusions. It’s unprofessional, confrontative, and just plain boring.
Are you trying to be the first to “call” things? Or do you just want everyone who reads your articles to just feel crumby going in?
AHHHH the Sonic generations
No no no no no SEGA the game was Perfection until you mentioned hub worlds make it Act>Act hub worlds was always a pain!
I like hub worlds. Especially the ones in Unleashed. The only problem there was having to collect medals to progress.
In Generations it’ll probably be more like Colors in that you’ll have to beat a certain number of levels to unlock more levels.
Gee, this doesn’t come across as fearmongering or trying to avoid bringing up the Sonic Cycle at alll. *coughcough*
This might have something to do with this “innovative new menu system” they’re talking about. They DID say that it was a way that “secrets could be found” and “other characters could be met”. …hell, this ain’t Sonic ’06 style we’re talkin’ about, this is SONIC JAM style! And I’m okay with that.
…on the other hand, an “open world” brings to mind something a bit different than a “hub world”. I think hub world, I think, one central area that ties all the levels together up until you beat it and go onto the next one. I think “open world”, I think…sandbox. GTA. Go and fool around in an area with no boundaries besides the ones set up that you can work around given you know how.
And if it’s anything like that, then people should be getting excited!
I LOOOOOVED sonic adventure 1 and 2 i hope it will be just like there so if it’s like there I like the hub towns those where MY FAVOURITE GAMES OF ALL i hope there making city escape too ^^
I’ll wait until I see it. For all we know it could just be some sort of extention of that menu.
LOL
I love how a lot of these Sonic news sites write articles and automatically bring up how it might spell trouble which might actually CAUSE people to view it negatively when they originally wouldn’t.
The reason I love it is because this article acts like hub worlds are such a nightmare and pretty much all by one comment so far has spoken with approval or possible approval of them! XD (And than you johnovision for pointing it out xD) Oh well, no biggie.
Anyways, I’m kinda happy to hear their’s hub worlds. I mean seriously it’s just a level select screen only you walk around in it instead of viewing it as a map. Some cutscenes can take place here. This is the “in-between stages” section where you can do extra stuff and relax or save and quit. It puts Sonic’s world together too. ALL they gotta do is not force us to go on missions or get medals and it’s all good. Just let us find a stage (Without it being some ancient contraption that sends us through a portal to that level).
In Sonic 06 I didn’t mind the hub-worlds, I just found them pointless and boring. In Sonic Unleashed it had a little more purpose but they didn’t connect Sonic’s world at all. They were just “outter-level” sections. They were an improvement tho. I had no specific PROBLEM with them (except for getting the medals)
I, for one, favor the Adventure Fields, down to the point I specifically prefer the term “Adventure Field” over “Hub World” (Tho the 2 seperate terms do allow me to categorize them by which I find great and which I find “meh” lol)
Hey, with the Dreamcast era showing up, does anyone think it might be possible that some of these Adventure fields might be remakes of Station Square and Mystic Ruins? Oh gawd that’d be kinda nostalgiac to walk through those areas again in a new and updated game. @__@ lol
It’d be weird if they made hub worlds out of the level select map from SA2. Finally wondering the SA2 world. XD (Space Colony Ark: Adventure Field. o3o LOL)
If there really are hub worlds….-sigh-. I hated going through all of those hub worlds in Adventure and Unleashed. I disliked the ones in Adventure and HATED the ones in Unleashed because I just wanted to get to the next level. But nope. I have to find paths, go search for this, look for the one of two statues, go see this Professor Pickle dude, go talk to Tails, go talk to the people, press the camera, beat up the monster, head down to the sewers, find your way out, go find the Triforce, pick up the Mega Mushroom, find the Sword in the Stone, find the Fountain of Youth, yadda yadda yadda. I’m sorry-I just wanted to get the levels over with-not go through several hubworlds and talk to several different people who MOST of the time have information I AM NOT LOOKING FOR just to access Act stinking 4 or a Mission. The people in Adventure are harmless enough, but good gosh, some stuff in order to access I HAD to talk to the people in Unleashed. Annoying as hell, and one of the reasons I don’t want humans (save for Eggman) in Sonic games.
So if there really are hub-worlds, I hope that there is a feature that lets me choose acts and missions that are available, and not go across the other side of the hub world or talk to some dude at a hot dog stand in order to access them. And let this act/mission be close to the exit sign as well. Please don’t make me have to find and talk to people in order to find something-especially if the hub worlds are big-just have most or all characters scattered across a specific area that is located where I can exit to the main menu and/or access other hub worlds. Finally, don’t let the hub worlds have enemies or make Sonic DIE in them or be filled with pointless human characters please.
I honestly love HUB worlds. I even liked the ones in 06 (even though I didn’t like the game itself so much). HUB worlds are always good IMO simply because you can just run around with no real objective. Its the little things, ya know? As long as it doesn’t stop you from getting from level A to level B (which 06 did at some points (damn town missions)), then there is really nothing to complain about.
Why is this “uh oh”? I thought it was obvious considering the game and hints from the Green Hill pictures.
Fuck, you people are pathetic.
Wish I could edit my own post, no, TSSZ is stupid right now. HURRHUB WORLDS EQUALS BAD AUTOMATICALLY.
Grow up, Tristan.
Hey people! Don’t forget this, IF there ARE hub worlds, then MAYBE you can play both Modern and Classic Sonics in them.
This has nothing to do with gameplay, but if both of those possibilities end up true it could mean running around a 3D enviroment with Classic Sonic just exploring for the first time since Sonic Jam. =D
I just don’t want there to be a hub world for every single level. I find the hub world to be more useful if it’s just a small simple but creative area that has all the needed stages.
For example, a hub world of South Island, Westside Island, Angel Island (perhaps a mash-up of Sonic Adventure’s areas but expanded to show Sonic 3 & Knuckles areas too), Station Square, Mystic Ruins, maybe the Death Egg, maybe the Egg Carrier, maybe Space Colony Ark, etc. =)
I mean really, a hub world of Station Square and Mystic Ruins remade in HD graphics would be sweet, and a hub world of South Island, Westside Island and Angel Island would be even sweeter (finally being able to explore the world of the classic games =D)
But this is all hypothetical. We might not even have hub worlds at all. XP lol
I like hub worlds. I think they’re cute and add a bit of exploration and depth into the game. I’ll welcome them in “Generations” with open arms. =)
… Or they could be talking about the “innovative” menu system. Modern Sonic World?
@Haru
Get some manners.
Looking forward to the Hubs.
I liked hubs…I wish the whole fcking game was a hub. At least it plays like Sonic Adventure…which is what it should be like to BEGIN with.
For me that’s not a big deal, if they came out similar to SU, I just want AWSOME and large levels with awsome gameplay
I completely forgot about Sonic Jam! I would love to have a hub worlds like that
Like everyone said before, what’s wrong with Hubs? If they’re done right I don’t see a problem with them. The only problem the ones in unleashed had was that stages couldn’t be opened without medals. Look forward too them if they are in the game.
as long as its like SA1, or Unleashed HD then fine by me.
I love the hub worlds from Sonic Adventure. One of the mail reasons why I didn’t enjoy SA2 as much was due to the lack of hub worlds… and 3 play styles versus the original 6 >__>
BRING ON THE HUB WORLDS
Hope for the return of hub worlds, “interactive menu” sounds pretty lame.
“In order to complete the game you have to finish all 2D and 3D levels. In other words you can’t just play through the older or newer levels.”
This game had better be long.
It would be nice if the hub worlds were only there for the Sonic Adventure and Modern-era levels. As if life outside of levels didn’t exist before 1998. XD
Like what Sloth said, I’ll wait to see what it’s like before I get my expectations up. If it’s anything like the Hub Worlds in Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Jam, then sign me up!
Hub worlds is one of those negative things that has been added to the Sonic franchise they are fucking pointless, the classics didnt have that shit it was always Act>Act SEGA did the right thing with SA2 when they removed hub worlds it was action all the time.
I mean as much as I loved Unleashed the hub worlds were nothing but a drag I was always waiting to play the next day stage so if the game was day stage>day stage>boss>day stage something like that I would loved the game much more…
SEGA please the game sounds so perfect no need for stupid hub worlds.
I personally like hubs. It’s a time in the game where you can relax and enjoy the scenery instead of racing past it at 9000+ miles per hour.
I personally loved SA1′s hub worlds, I’m looking forward to seeing hubs in Generations!
I loved the adventure fields for Sonic Adventure and Sonic 06 , but Unleashed had boring adventure fields .
I know this is unrelated, but shouldn’t Sonic Generations have its own tab in the “Sonic Scene” up there? After all, it is a new Sonic game, thus there should be a whole sub-search for articles specifically related to Sonic Generations. Just asking.
I really liked hub world in Sonic Adventure, too! But from what I’ve seen, Sonic 06 and Unleashed doesn’t have the best hub worlds.
But I really like hyb worlds though! I really wouldn’t mind if this really is going to happen
I’m gunna give them the benefit of the doubt here even though they have yet to make a hub for these games that:
A) have a point other than to slow your progress and
B) aren’t a complete pain to get through.
I’m assuming this is where the extra characters come into play. I just hope these are mostly optional though, and i don’t have to interogate people or collect medals etc. to proceed, otherwise we have a game breaker on our hands.
Personally, I found exploring the hub worlds in Adventure and 06 to be a nice way to waste a bit of time if I had nothing else to do.
I didn’t really like Unleashed’s, though. Those ones really did feel like a gigantic waste of time, especially with the whole Sun/Moon Medal deal.
Gooch don’t start alright The Hub Worlds were done nicely in SA 06 and SU and Chao93 if you were really a true sonic adventure fan you wouldn’t mind a hub world being in Sonic Generations.
And please SEGA show us the hub worlds for this game.
seems like more people like hub worlds than dont
I didnt care, as long as sonics speed isnt limited to just jogging
with any luck it’ll be like the hub from sonic jam.
I was hoping for hub worlds. You mean to tell me this “uh oh” is simply from 06?
Yes, 06′s hub worlds were painful, but that doesn’t mean every hub they try to make will be bad. Look at Unleashed, the hubs were beautiful, small, and rarely felt in the way. 06 was 5 years ago, stop living in the past and move on.
Like Sonic Advance 3?
That’s pretty cool. I dunno. If they want to use that formula, that means they’ll have to come up with not only 3 different remixed act songs for Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic in each level, but also an “overworld” or “map” stage song as well. If you remember Sonic Advance 3, then they did quite well with it. On the other hand, it wouldn’t exactly mimic a genesis experience (unless you’re talking about Sonic Crackers or Knuckles Chaotix). I’ll wait and see how Sega does this. *taps toe*
Plus, this could only be for the Adventure Era, everyone. .
I personally love hub worlds. Especially the ones from Sonic Unleashed. But the ones from Sonic Adventure could be frustrating at times, what with the camera and all, but I haven’t played the Dreamcast version, only the 360 ver. They are still fun, though.
