Is This the Nintendo-Specific Sonic on the Way?
If a recently released list from global gaming retailer GameStop is to be believed, we may have the identity of that Sonic title specific to a Nintendo console, and we may also know the identity of that Nintendo 3DS specific Sonic.
Scener Hero of Legend disclosed on NeoGAF and other sources a printed list the retailer just published for upcoming releases. The list includes, among a small handful of other unannounced fare, a Nintendo 3DS port of Sonic Generations, complete with a $39.99 price point, a SKU number, and like the known XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 versions, a tentative and almost certainly changing December 31 release date.
Sega hasn’t made it official, leaving a tendency to leave this in the rumor column. However, it may be a matter of when, not if, Sega unveils a port for the portable system. If it holds, it also technically means we still only know two of what may be up to three Sonic surprises for the year, leaving the door open to any number of things, the mostly likely of which is Sonic 4: Episode II.
We will keep you up to date on anything more we learn.

I doubt this game is going to be a direct port of generations, unless the 3DS can handle the Hedgehog graphics engine. And the fact that Sega has not announced it could mean that this project is canceled or it may have been replaced by another game (just like how the port of Sonic 2006 for the Wii was replaced with Sonic and the Secret Rings). I hope if there is a Sonic game in the works for the 3DS it is a platformer one either 2D or 3D because I am not too happy with the Sonic and Mario game coming to the 3DS and the Wii (the first game was unique and cool, but now its just getting repetitive) I also hope its not a Sonic Riders title or a Sonic Storybook title.
@am
the only thing in the new M&S i’m looking forward to is seeing a sonic colors or unleashed stage for a dream events.
I hope this is only a false rumor.
I seriously can’t stand Aaron Webber delaying Sonic Generations so much This is like the second time a delay was announced =/
this might be off topic, i’m not sure but
I REALLY hope that the Chaos Angel stage from Sonic Advance 3 makes it in Sonic Generations. I for one think it was the most iconic handheld stage…
@KeigoNiwa
i Think a good portable stage would be nocturne(chronicles)it would make a awesome edition to the game.
I hate Sonic 4 right now. I REALLY hope it’s a new Rush, 3D Platformer, or Chronicles for 3DS, or just a port of a Wii version of whatever it is.
@sonicdudefan1996 lolz, i mean no disrespect, but since chronicles is an RPG game at heart, i don’t think any of those stages are exactly iconic to the sonic franchise….. although it would be nice to hear the music revamped, because….. well you know XD
But Sonic Generations on 3DS wouldn’t be Nintendo SPECIFIC.
@KeigoNiwa
well the game itself is very known and nocturne while not very known is very beautiful and seems like a good idea. i mean look at the design of that level from mario and sonic and chronicles and imagine it detailed more on a next gen level. with all those neon colors with the dark vibe it gets it would work perfectly for modern and classic sonic levels. and yes music.
also mind checking out the list of stages i think would work and giving me feedback keigoniwa? heres the link:http://www.ign.com/blogs/thedolladudefan1996/2011/05/06/what-stages-do-you-want-in-sonic-generations-leave-a-comment
omg HUUGGEEE list haha, gimme a moment :3
I personally think Planet Wisp or Sweet Mountain would be best from colors, but to be quite honest, every stage in that game was sooooo unique that any choice would be perfect
I completely agree with Kingdom Valley, but only because having Crisis City in the game just wouldn’t make sense x.x
Definately either Spagonia or Apotos…. or possibly even eggman land, i mean, it is the longest Sonic stage i can think of XD. *i lean more towards Apotos though
I think Grand Metropolis would be perfect for the game haha. Classic Sonic would TOTALLY fit in that stage. Egg Fleet would be a nice addition too. I loved that stage haha
Ummm i’m pretty sure the entire sonic community would be shocked if Space Colony Ark WASN’T a stage. it IS the most iconic stage of the Adventure series.
I don’t remember any of the CD stages unfortunately. but uhhh, the Power Plant Zone, Hydrocity, and the carnival stage from Sonic3, those three stages along with Green Hill zone are the 4 zones that i think best discribe Sonic the Hedgehog
soooooo yea, haha this was kinda rushed =O
its okay overall what do you say about the list?(including nocturne),
it’s a rather plentiful list, but i do agree with about 98% of the list. I’m still not completely sure about the Nocturne stage though, although it would be the best pick from that game
Yeah we’d have to see how the artists would handle that stage. But thanks for the compliments!
here are some pic’s of nocturne:http://images.wikia.com/sonic/images/2/2b/Nocturne2.png
http://info.sonicretro.org/images/0/0c/NocturneMap.png
yea ummm, that first picture is how the game shoul’ve looked XD hahah jk, i actually really enjoyed that game ^^
who wants to think that this was made just because people wouldnt stop bitching?
@AM: The 3DS can handle Super Street Fighter 4 and a Resident Evil 5 engine. I see no reason why it couldn’t handle the Hedgehog Engine as well.
YESS!
I personally would love to see some of the advance era stages re-imagined
Particularly:
Music Plant (If it was called that…) -Sonic Advance 2
Route 99 – Sonic Advance 3
Cyber Track – Sonic Advance 3
Chaos Angel – Sonic Advance 3
I reckon it’s another Sonic Rush, but with a Sonic Advance engine for the classics.
Guys, seriously – this won’t have the Hedgehog Engine. The 3DS can’t even handle a GameCube game for goodness sake! It’s simple logic, the Hedgehog Engine can’t even work on Wii.
3DS and not Wii or Project Cafe?
Wii HD perhaps?
@anyone who saw the last blog

@Tom C! WTF are you talking about! The 3DS has processing power equivalent to a 360. This was mentioned before the 3DS was released. If it can play can play super street fighter 4 (with the extremely slight gfx downgrade…barely noticeable) it can handle sonic adventure 2 battle at the very least.
Well, I’m not saying much as I said I would so this will be fine with me. Colors DS was as good as Colors Wii, maybe almost as good, but I won’t mind this game on the 3DS.
Here’s a quote from SEGA about the 3DS game: “At Sonic Team, we’re already studying the Nintendo 3DS. We’re very interested in the platform. We think the depth of 3D could really help the sense of speed, especially when you’re playing Sonic from behind-the-back perspective.” They said BEHIND THE BACK perspective, not switching, or solid 2D as classic sonic.
Plus, It’d be kind of a waste if Sonic Generations was on the 3DS. Mostly because of Classic Sonic, he’s only 2D, so you can’t really use what the 3DS has to offer, and I don’t know if the 3DS can grasp Sonic’s High Speed.
If it’s true, sweet. Getting it for both 3DS and 360 then.
So is Generations an HD exclusive or not?
Manic: What the fuck are you talking about?
@Haru: Who knows =/
i think that they should put in city escap form sa2
@ cdrom1019
You are right the 3DS is very powerful. In fact the Pica 200 graphics chip inside it has special shaders and extensions that allow it to create graphical detail between Direct X 9C or 10.1 (Nintendo does not used these APIs, they used their own proprietary graphics APIs, but this will give you a general idea of what the graphics are like) while in stereoscopic 3D mode. If these extensions are enabled by the developer (they were in Street Fighter 4, Ghost Recon, and the two Residen Evil titles in the works). However, if the extensions are not used than it will only create graphics on par with Direct X 7 – 8 graphics (like Rayman 3D). Thus, it can handle Sonic Adventure 2 with ease. It will also be able to handle Gamecube and Wii ports with ease, because the flipper and Hollywood graphics cards are on par with Direct X 7- early 9 graphics. It might be possible to bring a direct port of Sonic Generations to the 3DS if the Hedgehog Engine’s graphics can be toned down, because it the Hedgehog Engine does a lot work with lighting which requires a lot of graphical power, and despite the 3DS’s power it might not be able to handle the lighting. It also depends if Sega is able to work with the 3DSs special graphical extensions, which for developers can take time to fully exploit.
it really doesnt matter to me since i have a 360 and i dont have a 3ds
but in the end i hope everyones happy
That’s wishful thinking, porting a game from a console to a hand held is much more complicated than flipping the low detail switch.
Shame that Nintendo didn’t the delay the 3DS to beef up it’s hardware and battery life

Comparing the economy of space between these makes Nintendo look like a joke, they could easy have designed it fit a much larger battery. Iwata made some comment saying “I truly thought that the fanboys would snap these up at any price.” (his exact words by the way) I believe he has gone full blown cynical and is having these systems designed in a way that he thinks will force “fanboys” to buy the upgrades they put out instead of mostly ignoring them like the DSi.
I thought they said awhile back that there would be a 3DS version of the anniversary game (now known as Sonic Generations). Also, I can totally see them being able to port it to the 3DS. I don’t neccessarily think it will be graphically the same, but I have a feeling it will be more or less a full-on port.
Y’know you can have an engine on a console but still use an engine. Sonic Colors Wii used the hedgehog engine for gods sake, of course the Wii can handle it.
@ Gooch
If you look behind the box of the Sonic Colors you would see that they used the CRIware Middleware and Nvidia’s Physx engine (the same engines used in the storybook series, and Sonic Unleashed Wii used the Havock engine and CRIware middleware). Thus, they did not use the Hedgehog engine for graphics in Sonic Colors. However, at first when I played the game on my Wii I thought that they used the hedgehog engine, because the game assets looked very similar, but it seems like they just down scaled down and ported the graphical assets to these hybrid engines.
@Gooch
You see how Sonic Unleashed and Sonic’s Colors’ boost blur looks different than the one in Sonic Colors? THAT’S the hedgehog engine. Sonic Colorse isn’t a Hedgehig Engine-replacement. =p
*Sonic Colors isn’t a Hedgehog Engine-replacement. =p It’s just similar only for the Wii. ^^
Now, does being on 3DS mean something similar to Sonic Colors DS? If so I’d be thinking what would modern and Classic Sonic look like? XD Would they be sprites? But then again it’s a 3DS so it’ll probably look similar to a 3D game (with 3D-vision graphics as well XP)
I would prefer having Metal Harbour from SA2, I mean who couldn’t remember the AWESOME MUSIC IT HAS and those SPEED seriously.
Well, I would love a separate, stand alone sonic platformer title, something other than another rush (I liked rush a lot, but I prefer something different this time around). However, I’m betting that it will indeed be Generations, simply because it’s sonic’s 20th anniversary, and I’m sure Sega wouldn’t miss putting it on each of the three factions of consoles. If it can’t do the wii, then the 3DS would seem to be the next best thing. It could be project cafe, but that won’t be out till next year at least–too late for sonic’s anniversary.
I mean, unless they have some other game to celebrate the anniversary, Generations is it–it’s THE game to cover the 20 years of sonic. I would think that they would just put it on the 3DS rather than try to make another game to cover the anniversary for Nintendo gamers. As much as I would love a brand new game, I’m guessing that Mario & Sonic, Generations, and Sonic 4 ep. II are all that we’re getting this year. And until I see some of Sonic 4, I’m only excited for Generations.
Though I suppose that another possibility would be a new game that doesn’t bother to celebrate the anniversary at all–then that could be on project cafe. But then it wouldn’t be out this year, and as I’ve said, Nintendo ppl would miss out, even it was actually on the wii or 3DS, and I don’t think Sega would do that for the big 2-0.
cdrom1019 The 3DS is powerful for it’s size, but A) Graphically, it may be good, but seriously – moving at extremely high speed using next generation engines with a graphics engine which barely works on a 360 is a bit much to ask for a portable console. B) How is that possible? A 3DS=360 power-wise? Dude, a 360 is about 7 times bigger than a 3DS, how could they fit the massive processing power in a tiny little handheld? I can acknowledge the fact that it is easily 3D capable (in both aspects) and may be graphically nice, but c’mon – realistically, this has the power of a PS2 or ever so slightly less. Plus, the 3DS uses game cards, which are not suited terribly well to handling such extreme gamerape that the Hedgehog Engine and other next-gen engines.
listen Nintendo Wii… sucks… The only game thats actually a really worth buying on the Wii game, is SSBBrawl.
3DS… for time being, sucks… needs more big games on.. like a hopefully proper mario and not a stupid mario galaxy -_- Sonic colours and mario galaxy 2 both failed for new ideas… exact clones of the previous game and etc.
Until Nintendo goes HD soon, All games on Wii will be singled out because of bad graphics…
WHY CANT SONIC USE FRIGGIN ITEMS ANYMORE???????????? HE COULD ON THE RUSH GAMES AND THAT USED BOOST!!!! GRRRRRRR KILL SONIC ANYMORE WHY DON’T THEY?? WHAT NEXT? NO MORE TAILS OR KNUCKLES PLAYABLE EVER?
PS: whats a series reboot? How has Sonic not been rebooted?
@blueblur Bit pessamistic, aren’t we? Colours was bloody awesome.
@blueblur
Sadly I agree with you but colors was awesome.
@blueblur
Despite not adding a lot of new things Sonic Colors and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are both amazing games. Some of the best games are created out of evolution not revolution. Look at Call Duty games, while each release adds some new features, nothing really major changes, just like Sonic Colors and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Also, I agree with you that Wii games are not graphical, but I disagree with you when you say all of them suck. We have got The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Metroid the Other M, Donkey Kong Country Returns, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Super Smash Bros Brawl (like you said), Sonic Colors, all next gen Call of Duty games except for Modern Warfare 2. These are all fantastic games.
