Summer of Sonic Seeking Voluntary Donations to Cover Costs

With yesterday’s news of the Sonic Boom event in a couple weeks during E3, it’s easy to forget how much independent effort is being put across the pond toward the Summer of Sonic convention.  This year, the London event will again be free this year, as it has been in years past.  But money doesn’t grow on trees; organizers spent not just their own time planning the show, but their own funds.

That’s why one of the SOS organizers, stage manager Adam “T-Bird” Tuff, is seeking voluntary donations for anyone willing to do so.  A statement concerning the drive, originally posted at the Summer of Sonic Facebook page was made available to the wider public on Sonic Wrecks Thursday.

“In order to provide the best experience each year, we’ve always gone over budget in the end; fortunately, that’s where the SoS staff have stepped in,” Tuff said.  “The likes of Phil ‘Vger’ Sims, John ‘Turbo’ Finlay, Svend ‘Dreadknux’ Joscelyne and Kevin ‘AAUK’ Eva along with many others have thrown huge, and I mean in some cases I mean huge amounts of money at the event for prizes, to fund our guests transport, accomodation and food, and to provide a whole host of other activities on the day. Not one person has ever asked for reciprocation or credit for one reason; Summer of Sonic is special to them, and is personally worth a hundred times the contribution, and I’m sure they would donate again and again.”

But that sacrifice is again being challenged.  With the budget even larger for next month’s event, a “large amount” of money, as Tuff put it, still comes out of organizers’ pockets.

So, the drive–”completely 100% voluntary,” in Tuff’s words–will help offset those costs and buy supplies for the day of the show.

“Donations, no matter how little are important in purchasing things that are vital, such as water for staff to drink on the day (they get thirsty!) or the odd bits and bobs like additional equipment hire,” Tuff explained.

With so much the convention has offered in past years, and looks set to offer this year, even a small donation can go a long way.

“If you could spare a little bit of cash, even just £5, it would make a huge difference to our cause,” Tuff said.
