But Not Without a Couple Hurdles and Hiccups

Starting on Saturday night and continuing through the rest of the weekend, Sony began to rollout partial restoration of the Playstation Network to its millions of users across the world.  As of this writing, the restoration has occurred across North America, Central America, Europe, and Australia.  Items like online play, Qriocity, trophies, friend lists, 3rd party subscription services and more are back up and running, though the Playstation Store itself is not.

The one holdout is Japan, and that’s because the government there won’t allow Sony to start restoration until the Media and Content Industry department, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Economy, is given more information on the steps the company is taking to beef up security.

On Sunday, many users held their breath when they again couldn’t access the PSN.  But Sony quickly assured the temporary outage was due to an overrun of individuals changing their passwords–a requirement of this weekend’s newly released firmware for the Playstation 3.

Details on Sony’s Welcome Back promotion and identity theft protection remain pending.
