Still, the Modern v. Classic Debate Continues
Talk has been loud about returning Sonic to his roots for years. Still, like it or not, there remains a healthy delegation of Sonic fans who prefer green eyes, pure speed, and tons of side characters over simple platforming.
With that in mind, we decided to ask in our latest @Issue poll whether, given the news of Sonic Generations, the return of classic Sonic, and a focus only toward Sonic gameplay, you felt Sega was turning a corner and beginning to neglect modern fans who are used to options and variety. Out of 900 votes, 80 percent voted no. Just 20 percent voted yes.
So, the nays have it, and a new poll is available for you to vote on. You can discuss the results of this poll below. And for the record, the poll that preceded this one was scrapped due to it closing early in error.

@Andre
Well they can work around the conditions. Having a low budget, not catering to fan requests and having little time to make a game doesn’t mean they can’t make a small, simple, short game that’s original and stuff fun as a side/spinoff party game or something. Granted, some ideas can determine a bad game from the get-go if it’s just a bad idea. XD
So I guess we’re kinda both right and wrong on this because we’re probably not completely 100% sure. =P
As for Sonic 4, that’s not really a good example for trying to get your point across, especially if you’re talking to someone who liked Sonic 4. =P Like I said before, Sonic 4 isn’t unsuccessful to everyone as it was a 2D Sonic game, was very close to the classic games compared to every game since them, and it was functional with all the abilities and more. The physics thing bothered some people as a pet peeve that got in the way for some while feeling like merely being “different” but not necessarily “bad”, and some found them even useful/helpful. To me Super Sonic controlled better too. It’s a perspective thing. And IGN, who previous bashed Sonic over and over, felt it was a comeback for Sonic. So at most I’d consider it a “hit-and-miss” game, not a “bad” game.
1: Saying they took a dump on it doesn’t really provide any example.
2: Dimps had previously done the Rush series which was well-received.
4: Ep1 was short, added a season of develpment and ep2′s developement didn’t start til after it’s release. Their schedule wasn’t that title.
And with those conditions you listed being said, there was a 50/50 chance, because it could have been a lot worse (to those who liked the game)/could have been a lot better (to those who disliked the game) even under those conditions. It just depended on what they ended up doing throughout the progress. Saying that having a stream of good games automatically means the next will be good too isn’t very competent itself, as being a classic fan you should remember that you liked SEGA’s classic games, yet you don’t like the newer ones. That means that SEGA made good games and suddenly started making bad ones. That means that even with a series of bad games, they can pull out a good one still. Every new game they work on gives them the opportunity to make a good or a bad game. If that wasn’t true, we wouldn’t have Sonic Colors and wouldn’t be getting Sonic Generations. =P
Sorry for the long comment. Wasn’t sure how to squeeze that into being shorter. -.-
@FoxBoy
Man, I’m sure you’re not here just to win this argument… but seriously, it’s not a question of dumb luck. In Sega’s case it’s really different from Blizzard’s and Bioware’s because Sega has a track record of screwing up its own golden franchise not because they’re unlucky, but because Iizuka, for example, has SHIT FOR BRAINS.
If you seriously believe everything in life is just a question of throwing dice, maybe you’re playing too much RPGs. Granted, there are certain variables you can never control, such as the economy or weather, but there are dozens of others you can and MUST control if you hope to be successful in any career you pursue. And those controllable variables are what separates the kids from the men.
I know you don’t want to see it, because you like Sega, but let me tell you clearly: if a game by Sega is bad, it’s because they are INCOMPETENT. Gone are Sega’s glory days, we are hoping they can come back to their former glory with the help of fan feedback, but right now Sega is just starting to walk the path of recovery, and that’s it. And if it’s recovering, it’s not due to luck. It’s because it has started to listen to its fanbase, for example, thanks in no small part to the american team that’s been doing a good job with the online communities.
By the way:
1. There’s plenty of evidence for anyone to see. I’m sure you can find what was promised to the classic fans during the Great Project Needlemouse Fiasco and what was eventually leaked during the Sonic 4 development. Everyone in the retro community (for whom the gamed was being made for) called the game SHIT, and still Sega released it without having fixed all the problems.
2. Rush series is not classic series. Project Needlemouse was promising something very different to the fans. Also, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that the cel-shaded Sonic and Robotnik look like utter ASS, the level layouts are inconsistent and the music fucking sucks. In the team department, the whole team assembled wasn’t good enough to pull it off. They promised big and delivered tiny.
3. It was tight. If it wasn’t, they could have done as Blizzard and Valve and delayed the release until it was PERFECT. They chose to release it anyway. I’m telling you from my heart, I regret having bought Sonic 4. I still play the classics, and never touched Sonic 4 again. The game is an offense to the classic trilogy.
And we’re only getting Colors or Generations because Sega’s finally listening. Again, it’s not blind luck. They have started to, slowly but surely, listen to their retro fans, their most critical fans, and the quality of the games have been improving for everyone.
Like I have always said: modern fans, leave the retro crowd alone with our bitching. The more we bitch, the more you’ll like the games that Sega will make. Just let us do our job in peace and soon we’ll be holding hands in Sonic paradise. Don’t defend Sega blindly, they don’t deserve it. They don’t deserve to crash and burn because people just love them but never help them improve.
nice speech foxboy. i was just reading some of this on the first day of august and now that everyone has spoken their peace let me speak mine. here’s how to help improve, you heard of richard kuta’s fan film besides eddie’s. look at the fan film poster artwork along with the sonic sketch especially uncle chuck’s. pretend that this is sonic without the mustash and hairy eyebrows, brown gloves and grey red sneakers. see the chuck hedgehog design as sonic on sonic racing game cover of richard kuta’s chuck artwork. YOU SEEING WHERE I”M GOING WITH THIS? the quils, arms and legs are SLIGHTLY longer with half the green eyes like kuta’s fan film poster artwork resembling modern sonic just not taking away from classic sonic maintaining the PEFECT balance of both. this is also what we as retro fans should show sega on what they need to do during finishing up generations and developing sonic 4 episode 2. you decide on what they do with episode 1.
